2. •The position of the cerebellum
1)Situated in the posterior cranial fossa
2)Covered superiorly by the tentorium cerebelli
3)Lies posterior to the 4th ventricle, pons & medulla oblongata
•Cerebellum has 2 hemispheres & they are joined by the
vermis
•It’s connected to the brainstem by the superior, middle & inferior
cerebellar peduncles
•Cerebellum has 3 lobes : Anterior, Middle (Largest) &
Flocculonodular lobe
•Cerebellum has 2 covering outer of grey matter (Cortex) &
inner white matter

3. Cortex (The grey matter)
Layers of the cerebellar cortex
1) External layer : Molecular layer (Contains 2 types of neurons)
• Stellate cells (Outer)
• Basket cells (Inner)
1) Middle layer : Purkinje layer (Purkinje cells are large Golgi type I neurons)
2) Internal layer : Granular layer (Packed with small cells)

4. Cortex (The grey matter)
Functional areas of the cerebellar cortex
1. Vermis : Influence the movements of the long axis of the body
(Neck, shoulder, thorax, abdomen & hips)
2. Intermediate zone : Control the muscles of the distal parts of the limbs –
Hands & feet
3. Lateral zone : Involved in planning sequential movements &
conscious assessment of movement errors

5. The white matter
White matter is made up of 3 groups of fibers
•Intrinsic fibers : Don’t leave the cerebellum, but connect different
parts of the organ
•Afferent fibers : Proceed to the cerebellar cortex
•Efferent fibers : Constitute the output of the cerebellum
4 masses of grey matter are embedded in the white matter
forming intra cerebellar nuclei (Lateral to medial)
•Dentate nucleus
•Emboliform nucleus : Axons form the superior cerebellar
peduncle
•Globose nucleus
•Fastigial nucleus : Axons form the inferior cerebellar
peduncle
