2. Corporate Social Responsibility And Human Rights

CORPORATE SOCIAL RESRPONSIBILITY (CSR)
Introduction
Today, the world faces numerous challenges ranging from dreadful environmental
conditions through poverty and human rights, to energy and resource supply issues.
Social responsibility policy focuses on using the capabilities of a business to improve
lives and sustain our planet through contributions to local communities and society at
large. In other words, a business should fully realize it s potential as an organization
to make a better world through corporate self regulation assimilated into a business
module.
CSR and Human Rights The global community expects companies to operate with
due admiration for human rights. Beyond meeting regulatory requirements and social
expectations in areas in which they operate, by proactively presenting more rigorous
international standards such as the United Nations Global Compact, companies will
reinforce their commitment to human rights. In 1998 the Secretary General of the
UN, declared that he was building a more solid relationship with the business
community. Thriving markets and human security goes hand in hand: without one
we will not have the other (Annan,
1998, p. 1820). Afterwards, a World Economic Forum was held in 1999. At the forum,
Kofi Annan introduced what is known the Global Compact . This is the ten principles
agreement between the
3. Joseph O Loughlin
Joseph O Loughlin is the central character in the Joseph O Loughlin series of novels
authored by popular Australian author Michael Robotham. The first novel that
featured the O Loughlin character was the 2004 title Suspect . The novels in the
series are best classified as detective crime mysteries.
The best description of Joseph O Loughlin is that of a family man, a kindhearted
psychologist with a dry sense of humor and a magnificent sense of humanity. He
works alongside his best friend the former detective and hard drinking Vincent Ruiz
whose personality could not be any more different. Nonetheless, the two characters
have great chemistry and complement each other in their work.
The series of novels is set in London and introduces the ... Show more content on

20 October 2014 Library of FlamesAs a shooting star crosses the sky all that can be
done is watch as something great disappears in an instant. The same goes for the
Library of Alexandria. The library of Alexandria was a famous library that contained
nearly a million scholarly books and scrolls. The library contained books regarding
astronomy, geography, architecture, mathematics, medicine, biology, philosophy, and
literature. As a result of many wars, fires, and religious decries, the Library of
Alexandria s informational content was either lost or destroyed. The burning of the
library changed history because much Greek culture was lost. Also many scientific
ideas were destroyed in the Library of Alexandria. Many countries made the same
mistake as the Greece did during the Dark Ages because the information about the
Dark Ages was lost in the library. The destruction of the Library of Alexandria has
had a major impact on history because the information lost in ... Show more content

For example, many historians believe that the library contained information about the
lost city of Atlantis. It is also thought that the Library of Alexandria contained
information about the dinosaurs and why they mysteriously disappeared (
Alexandria ). If the library had never burned, this information would be available to
people. There are people who spend their entire lives trying to figure out why the
dinosaurs disappeared and whether or not Atlantis was real. If people knew the
whereabouts of Atlantis, society as a whole could benefit. Atlantis could give many
new ideas regarding architecture. Also, Atlantis could provide information about
what to do so that our cities do not end up like Atlantis. If scientist knew what
happened to the dinosaurs, they could make sure it does not happen to humans or

Examining Theory Paper
In this paper I am going to go with the video for social structure theory when
covering the following topics. I will introduce how the video supports a social
structure theory, the primary subject and content, major principles of the
sociology theory addressed and social issues discussed. I am going to discuss, in
the last part of this paper, what are some possible consequences for a social policy
change. The video that I have chosen to do this paper on will be the Pelican Bay
State Prison: War Zone to best fit with my beliefs of social structure theory simply
the top reason for criminality evolving. In the video that I have viewed, Pelican Bay

The prison is trying to fight back and put a stop to the gang activity, but it is doing
no good. The prison are made try to and keep the gang leaders and members from
continuing this activity of violence on the street and put them into a scare but the
gang members and leaders come to Pelican Bay to hone their skills instead of
losing touch of them. The prison is a war zone with violence at every corner and
communication to the outside to order killings. This state prison has not been the
upper hand for the law enforcement to keep gangs at a low but a backfire
situation. The social issues raised in this video are the controlling of gangs through
the prison in many ways. The gang leaders in Pelican Bay run drugs through
communication techniques used while in prison, and if there is a problem that
needs to be taken care of through murder, it is the responsibility to the gang leader
to order the call. Pelican Bay wants to stop this running that the gang leaders do,
but it is not as easy as it seems. The battle of keeping the gang leaders from running
the gang still while in prison is more of a war instead of a battle. There are so
many different views that the prison staff has to look at in each battle of this war
that goes on every day in the Pelican Bay State Prison. There are two main
principles that I see that are addressed in this video. The two

The capacity to maintain stability in the industry is now found through servicing a
specific niche market. The industry is now composed of those catering to the high
income and luxury products such as Neiman Marcus and on the other hand is Wal
Mart, Big Lots, and Target catering mostly to discounters (Tsiantar, 2006). The
industry is therefore highly competitive right now. With fewer people making their
way to department stores, the industry is filled with players all struggling to maintain
market share through innovative strategies. The retail industry however is unusually
hard to penetrate. Despite the high level of competition among the players in the
industry, new players are finding it hard to stay in the industry because of the size of
the players. One of the strategies of retailers right now is expansion in almost all
cities across all states. This would enable them to capture as much market as they can.
The industry players size is one of the important barriers to entry that should be
considered. With the size of the main competitors and the increase in the number of
their stores, new players are finding it hard to enter the industry. The industry is also
suffering from the problems of substitutability of products that they are offering. Each
department store is offering different lines of products that are in direct competition
with other products. This is therefore creating an industry that is
7. Video Game Players And Non Video Games
Abstract This study tests the executive control differences in regular video game
players and non video game players. Through the use of a Stroop task, subjects were
tested on their reaction times when answering the direction of an arrow stimulus with
either random words or dissimilar directions written across it. The incongruent
directions were to cause cognitive interference, resulting in slower reaction times.
Evidence suggests that regular video gameplayers may be less affected by this form
of interference. Findings indicate that the Stroop task did not create an
interference effect, regardless of video game familiarity, and that there were no
differences between video game players and non video game players in Stroop
task performance. As technology continues to progress, the traditional pastimes of
board games and hand cards have been largely replaced by modern video games.
Attention has been brought to this with a 43% increase in the use of video games
in the last few years and the percentage of college students who acknowledge
themselves as regular video gamers at nearly 70% (Barlett et al., 2009). These
statistics raise the question of what impact these visual games might be having on our
cognitive processes. The two main executive control functions that are critical in
playing video games include increased attention skills and problem solving. Video
game players are thought to be better at these skills either through practice or self
selection (Barlett et

form of Bulimia is Multi Impulsive Bulimia Nervosa this illness begins just like
simple bulimia begins and in the same age group. This illness is usually caused by
emotional and impulse control and most of the same reasons as simple bulimic
sufferers. Most multi impulsive bulimia nervosa sufferers also suffer from drug or
alcohol abuse, self harm [cutting forearms], and stealing. Usually there is a
disturbance in the family of somewhat and in personality they have shown poor
interest in normal activities, school, and socializing.
The disorder of Bulimia can be triggered by many different reasons and problems in
someone s life. Bulimia is not just about losing weight and being frightened to gain
weight there s more to it. The reason of vomiting is more to feel like the person can
control something in their life .As they feel that they can t control most things that
occur in their life they choose to vomit so they can control their weight this is
most common in the teen years because puberty has just changed their whole life
mostly, also for different people it eases stress and anxiety. There are so many
different reasons for these disorders such as some cultures have the ideal body
weight, which just happens to be thin. Families have a big impact on this disorder
as well, mostly when the parents have a big say or opinion on the child s appearance
or a family member
9. Why Did Absolutism Fail
European place such as France, Prussia, and Austria became absolutist state,
however England failed to become an absolutist state. In fact, England became a
state that ruled with the ideas of constitutionalism. Although England had monarchs
that ruled with absolutism, they failed to fully develop the absolutist ideas,
because previous laws clashed with absolutist idea, the creation of the Long
Parliament slowed down the development of absolutism, and the Glorious
Revolution abolished the ideas of absolutism. One main reason for why England
did not become an absolutist state was, because previous laws that were long
standing clashed with absolutist ideas. James I lectured the House of Commons
that there are no privileges and immunities which can stand against a divinely
appointed King (McKay, 506). This contradicted the fixed law that a person s land
cannot be seized without the proper process of law. The absolutist idea that only
God has power over the king and the king has complete power over everyone else
was not accepted by the people of England, which contributed to why absolutism
failed to exist. Due to the disagreements between the king and the Parliament, Charles

Charles I tried to rule without the Parliament, which made him lose a major source of
money. This caused him to issue taxes without the consent of the Parliament or the
House of Commons. These actions caused the people of the Parliament to not trust
the king, so they created a Long Parliament. The Long Parliament enacted legislation
that limited the power of the monarch and made government without Parliament
impossible (McKay, 508). The Long Parliament decreased the power of the ruler,
which clashed with the idea in absolutism that the ruler has complete power over

Title IX does not currently achieve the bill s original purpose of equal opportunity
between the sexes because the tests used to measure compliance are flawed, the
required balance of funding between male and female sports teams is skewed due to
revenue sports, and there is a vast amount of misinformation about the results of Title

11. Catechism In The Chick Tract
This Chick Tract also touches on the idea of an all loving God which goes hand in
hand with the idea of God giving His only begotten Son so that everyone else will
be allowed eternal life (John 3:16 ). The fundamentalists try to state in this Chick
Tract that God does not love Roman Catholics because God views them as a false
religion. The fundamentalists believe that the Catholic Churchis just trying to
persuade people to join their faith and that it actually goes against the word of God.
According to the Catechism of the Catholic Faith, Catholics believe in an all
loving God due to the fact that He always provides for His people, forgives sins,
and most importantly offers His followers an eternity of everlasting love with Him
in heaven if they choose to do so (Cline, Austin, Is God Omnibenevolent). God has
proven that He loves all of His followers and children not only through the giving
of His Son, but also throughout other parts of the Bible. Deuteronomy 7:9 shows a
great example of this love Remember that the Lord your God is the only God and
that he is faithful. He will keep his covenant and show his constant love to a
thousand generations of those who love him and obey his commands . God is
telling his followers that if they remain faithful to Him, He will in return remain
faithful to them, and will always guide them and keep them safe. This God does not
seem to be a God of hate who could merely banish someone to spend the rest of
eternity burning in hell for not
12. Logic And The Bible By Thomas B. Warren
Logic is truly one of the most overlooked yet useful things in life and godliness. It is
something that we, usually unknowingly, use daily. While many agree with the use
of logic in scripture and bible study, there are many who think otherwise. Some others
think it is unimportant and only for the scholarly. However, in LogicAnd The Bible
by Thomas B. Warren, the reader is introduced to the reality of logic in the
scriptures as well as its attainability in understanding. The author helps the reader
recognize that logic is not just for the scholars, but also for the common man. Logic
can be explained in a way that cannot only be understood, but a way that makes it
able to be applied in the use of the bible student.
In the beginning of the book, the author, Thomas B. Warren, begins by doing
apologetic work for the case of the use of logic in scripture. First, Warren discusses
the revealing of the contentions placed forth by different writers who are anti
logic . This stance proves to be rather true in the sense that the contentions to logic
revealed by Warren simply lack logic! The arguments against logical implicational
deduction are believed by some with the basis of, Since all inferences are of human
origin, unless we want to hold on to human patterns we should ficard necessary
inference as poor pattern material (4) as well as, Only those examples that are the
objects of a direct command are binding on us (4). This is interestingly a widely
belief system that Warren

the craziest religious fanatic to live during the 20th century because he

lived in Jonestown for a few months before leaving in the spring of 1978. After
Blakey escaped she attempted to get government officials involved in the problems
going on in Jonestown, with little success. Blakey described the suicide plans in

community he still did more bad than good. He held almost a thousand people

14. The Power Of Language And Images In The Little Refugee
In the texts The Little Refugee by Anh and Suzanne Do (2011) and The Arrival
illustrated by Shaun Tan (2007), language and images are used to target younger
audiences on the important matter of Australian refugees and immigrants. Both texts
emotionally explore the hearts of immigrants and refugees. Through the language and
images that are used, the responders are positioned to see the struggles of those who
come from another country. The viewer would see how much a little smile and a

One of these values is hope. This is particularly evident in The Little Refugee. In
The Little Refugee, the characters come to Australia because they feel as though
they do not belong in their countries of origin. Anh Do described in the text that
they were no longer welcome in their own country because his father fought in the
Vietnam War. After the war ended their lives were in great danger because they
were on the losing side. My family decided to escape to another country (p5). This
language shows how refugees feel when they come to Australia. They have no
hope in having a life in their own country so they come to Australia for hope. When
Anh Do first came to Australia, the first words he said were, What a great country
(p11). The power that this language uses shows that he was down and upset and
now with these simple words he is in a happy and positive place. We know this just
through the power of four words. The little boy would have been so happy to be
out of a country that was going to kill him. In end of this picture book, Anh Do did
have hope which lead him to have a good ending. That was that he hoped for
somewhere to be safe and to belong somewhere. Mum and Dad always told me to
have hope, and to believe that everything would turn out okay in the end... And they
were right. It did. (p 23). As this text is targeted towards children between the ages of

Plot synopsis: This play is a memory play introduced by the main character and
narrator, Tom Wingfield, based on his recollection of his mother, Amanda, and
sister, Laura. After their father leaves them their family is stuck living in the past.
Tom works at a warehouse trying his best to support his sister and mother. Tom
often finds himself bored and uses cinema movies and drinking to escape his

for Tom s sister, Laura, who spends most of her time with her glass collection. After
Tom brings Jim, a gentleman caller who turns out to be engaged, home Laura learns a

Throughout this play I began to realize how much of an effect Tennessee Williams
life was affected by his father s absence and his parents failing marriage.
The author s writing style was very simple yet meaningful at the same time. My
overall favorite quote that stuck out to me throughout the whole book was in scene
two on page sixteen when Amanda tells Laura So what are we going to do the rest
of our lives?.... Amuse ourselves with the glass menagerie, darling? (Williams 1999
p.16). I believe this quote is very meaningful because it expresses the way people
are in life. Many people wait for opportunities while others create their own
opportunities for success and this is very important when it comes down to work,
schooling and even relationships.
I really enjoyed this play because there was so much significance within the
characters lives and the author s life. I learned many interesting facts about the
character which managed to capture my attention throughout my research and while

16. Squids
Squids are within the class cephalopods. They are known for representing the top
of the food chain for the large group of soft bodied animals known as Molluscs as
they are extremely fast moving predators. Their various adaptations have allowed
them to thrive in the ocean. Derived from the ancestral mollusk, the squid has
evolved to better suit its environment and therefore thrive and reproduce fertile
offspring more effectively. This process is known as natural selection, which leads
to evolution or a change in allele frequency from generation to generation. The
phenotype of the squid appears completely to its ancestral form; the new variations
have occurred. Some examples of these pre existing variations in squids are the lack
of an outer shell, fusion of its head and foot, siphon, tentacles, location of its mouth,
and its skin. The squid lacks an outer shell; instead, it is instead underneath its skin.
The function of this is that the squid doesn t need protection from... Show more

will act as selective forces: they are salient because they will affect the ability for a

repercussions on the squid as an entire population. The lack of oxygen will cause
the squid to not be able to move quickly and efficiently. The squid will be using up
a lot of energy and not resupplying it through oxygen, causing the squid to not be
able to propel itself and thus thrive. This in tern will lead to the squid being unable
to catch prey: vital to its survival. The lack of oxygen could also lead to the death
of the squid as it cannot breathe. The blocking of light by the algae blooms will
further deteriorate the squid s ability to be a predator. The squid uses its eyes to see

17. The Experiential Exercises During The Classroom Essay
The experiential exercises conducted in the classroom all encompassed a social
element of communication, a collaborative approach, and a process of maintaining
an internal monologue, a sense of self expression, self realization, and self reflection.
These unique exercises, albeit, very different from one another, all effectively gave
the participant an experience that stimulated thought, challenged the persons comfort
zones and familiarity, as well as forced each individual to deeply compare the exercise
processes and outcomes to their own common occurrences in their personal lives.
Furthermore, the exercise outcomes often stimulated ideas and possibilities for
personal development and growth, enhancing one s character and personality traits,
and encouraged changes to their own abilities, habits, and behavioral patterns.
Although I preferred some exercises over others, I found that I was stimulated
differently during and after each exercise, and often found the exercise outcomes
resonating for the rest of the evening, and often stimulating thought and discussion
with others throughout the next day. Each exercise effectively allowed a participant
the ability to consider, evaluate, and challenge their personal character, actions, and
motives. The first experience that I thoroughly enjoyed and will be examining, is the
insightful discussion and mindfulness meditative exercise conducted by the guest

Graham Hess is a protagonist character from the movie Signs (2002), who is a
retired priest that lives on a farm in Doylestown, Pennsylvania. Graham has been
left with the duties of taking care of his children after the death of his wife in an
automobile accident. In the movie, Graham and the rest of his family are hiding

aliens. In this scene, Graham and Merrill converse until a very important but
seemingly unanswerable question arises. The question being if Graham believes
this, the alien attack, is the end of the world. This followed by Graham giving a
short monologue in which he asks Merrill, Are you the kind of person who sees
signs and sees miracles? This question pertains to the various beliefs of many
individuals about whether there is an overlooking figure, possibly God, that is
responsible for all actions. It is a very relevant and important question if you
consider the fact that it so closely relates to our curriculum in PH 231 C, The
Introduction to the Philosophy of Knowledge. Over the course of the semester, we
learned and discussed about many people and their corresponding beliefs; some of
which included the concept of God and his possible existence. Prior to this semester,
I think I would have considered myself to fall under one of Graham Hess categories,
one that I do not consider myself to be in now. This course and the curriculum
managed to change my outlook;

21. Vegetarianism Is A Better Lifestyle Than Eating Meat And...
People eat food every day without knowing its origin or how it was processed. As
people mature, they pay more attention to how food affects them, instead of how it
affects the environment. Although it is a fact that everyone needs to consume food
to survive, what kind of food one consumes is ultimately the choice of the person
themselves. Vegans and vegetarians support both a healthy diet and environment
without exerting themselves. Veganismand vegetarianismis a better lifestyle than
eating meatand meat products. Intentionally avoiding flesh eating first came into
place as a part of rituals for short lived purification. Evidence of vegetarianism has
been found during different times and places all over the world. The teaching of
Pythagoras of Samos, a philosopher, in the fifth century BC is the first recorded
teaching of avoiding flesh eating in the Mediterranean. He taught that kinship of all
animals is a base of goodwill towards each other ( Vegetarianism ). Vegetarianism has
been around since the sixth century BC in Greece and Italy; their biggest motive was
to avoid harming animals ( Vegetarian Verve ). In Europe during the seventeenth and
eighteenth century CE, the greater significance of humanitarianism and moral
progress, and the return of animal awareness allowed vegetarianism to expand and
gain attention ( Vegetarianism ). By the 1830 s, the term vegetarian was already
being used in the United States. However, it was not popularized until

impact in British history were the punks culture during the late nineteen seventies.
The punk cultures were to rebel against the government during the great depression
and were all about the attitude of the younger generations. During the late nineteen
seventies was the time of unemployment and social unrest, a lot of the young white
kids felt outcast from the British culture, foreseeing their lives with little prospect

23. The United States And China
Like Athens and Sparta, were the United States and China drawn into a war neither
power wanted because of their alliances?
Introduction
The United States and China were eagerly ready to be drawn into the Korean War.
Why wouldn t they be? After WWII, Japan was forced to relinquish Korea, among
other territories that it claimed , and Korea was left to fend for herself. Korea was
managing but the country could not come to an agreement on a major topic: The
type of government the country should fall under as a unified nation. The northern
half, lead by Kim II Sung, wanted to operate under the communist rule; but the
southern half, lead by Syngman Rhee, wanted to operate under a democracy (non
communist and independent ruling). This was like a set of twin siblings arguing
and fighting over which of the two of them should carry the basketball as they walk
down the street to the basketball court. They are that they both want to play
basketball together but they can t agree on who should be in charge and carry the
ball. Well, the older and more experienced neighbors, The United Statesand China,
wanted to play too but since it was Korea s court, they decided to just sit back and
await a decision but could only bear to watch the argument and fight for so long.
They too had an opinion about who should carry the ball or should I say which
governmental theory to abide; therefore, they wanted to intervene.

24. El Barrio Summary
In anthropology, and with all sorts of research and studies, there are set guidelines
and restrictions that must be followed in order for the findings and research to be
considered accurate. In fact, how research is conducted can be studied
anthropologically as well. Why do we feel that a finding needs to meet certain
standards in order for it to be considered truthful? What differentiates the sources that
are trusted and the sources that are not? What is the most ethical yet accurate way of
doing researchand what determines that?
In anthropology, guidelines must be followed when conducting and collecting
research in order to prevent biases, ethnocentric ideas, and prejudices. The

His original purpose was to write a first hand account of poverty and ethnic
segregation in one of the world s largest and richest cities, yet he ends up
discovering the truths about daily lives in East Harlem of crack dealers and their
families in relation to survival from the underground economy, which shifts the
focus and purpose of his writing. This shift originates from his practice of the
elements of ethnographic fieldwork. He moves into an apartment in El Barrio with
his wife for three years, and even had a child at that residency, in order to conduct
his studies thoroughly and efficiently. By living in El Barrio, he makes himself a
part of El Barrio rather than an outsider looking in, which contributes to the ideas
of participant observation. He is able to do have participant observation
experiences with the inhabitants of El Barrio because his long term residency
allowed him to gain access to those experiences. He also gains insight of aspects of
the environment of El Barrio, specifically regarding the availability of drugs.
Bourgois states that he was able to get crack, cocaine, and heroin on the block
which he lived, a number of other drugs in a two block radius from his home, and
within a hundred yards from his building were three competing crack houses,
observations that would be difficult to obtain without his residency in El Barrio.
Bourgois studies an area which shares the same language as his native language and
has no language barrier to overcome. He does need to learn to understand the slang
terms specific to El Barrio and drug dealing which reflect the attitudes of the
inhabitant of the area. His participant observation consists of befriending the citizens
of El Barrio by gaining their trust, having conversations, and tagging along to their
activities to unveil the truths of the underground economy and what sustains it. He
discovers that these drug

26. Social Class And The Middle Class Essay
Social class can be defined as a social construct which is used to describe a group of
people with similar levels of wealth, influence and status. They tend to have
dramatically different values and mannerisms to others groups, for example, the
working class are seen as uneducated and unskilled workers, whereas the middle
class are seen as highly educated people with high incomes (Harcourt, 2016). Despite
there being other social classgroups, including, the upper class, this essay will
explore the portrayal of the working class, lower class, also known as the underclass
, and the middle class in reality television, using the example of Wife Swap.
The working class and the lower class groups have been increasingly visible on
British television screens in recent years, mainly because the increasingly popular
genre of reality television features them heavily (Morley, 2009). Debates have
sparked on whether the use of ordinary people on such programmes is
democratising or exploitative. It could be argued that because the working class
were not on such programmes, audiences and society therefore had no access to
them and their lifestyles. However, the great exposure of working classes on reality
television programmes now provides access to them and allows people to observe
and judge how they behave and how they live.
It is not a recent discovery that disadvantaged individuals, families and communities
are portrayed in negative lights by the media (Crossley and Slater, 2014),

1.The most memorable part in the Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl is the
portion about Linda s hiding for nearly seven years (Jacobs122) in a place that is

Linda hiding in such an uncomfortable space was enough to make my hatred for

place that she was unable to stand up and easily move around in (96). I thought
about how she was so close to her children, but unable to share their young lives (96).

word and follows the ways of a slave owner.
3.Slavery was oppression at the core. Many slaves who attempted escaping were
chased down by bloodhounds...[that] literally tore the flesh from [their] bones (41).
Others were so oppressed that they lacked the strength and means of escape.
Others who thought about escaping saw only the danger, danger associated with
their life and danger associated with their position. Some slaves stayed because
they never really knew the reality of slavery, they had never felt slavery (45).
Some who attempted to escape were placed in jail and others were sold (45).
Slaves were not only enslaved by their owners, but by their own knowledge and
experiences. I believe many choose not to escape because they respected their life
and wanted to preserve it as long as they possible could. Some slaves stayed
because they had family and friends that begged them to stay (77). Some slaves
who escaped were strong willed and had enduring strength to leave family, friends,
and everything they knew for a better life (25). I may be wrong, but I believe we are

28. Subjugation Of Women In The Good Earth By Pearl S. Buck
It is not an unknown topic that men are seen to be higher ranking or superior than
women in society, in history and even today. Women can be considered weak or
less intelligent than men; they have a lower pay rate and are not taken seriously in
the work place. In some countries, women are not allowed to drive or own their
own property or house. They are forced to cover themselves from head to toe by
their husband or father. The issue of subjugation of women all over the world, from
the past and the present, is one important theme delivered in The Good Earthby Pearl
S. Buck. The principal character in the novel, Wang Lung, starts out as a poor
farmer living in Ancient China who gained his wealth from his land. His wife O lan
is one of the many female characters who are treated poorly and are held in lower
status than men by not only Wang Lung, but other men and all of society.
To start with, O lan, Wang Lung s wife, was a very selfless, quiet, hardworking
woman who was a house slave in the House of Hwang, a very rich powerful family.
Wang Lung then married her and she lived on his farm. It is overlooked by Wang
Lung throughout the novel how much she has done for him and their family.
Before Wang Lung met O lan, he wanted a wife that will act like a servant and will
deprive him of any responsibilities, and that is exactly what he got. She cleaned the
house, took care of Wang Lung s father and the children, and worked in the fields as
well. She is, however, the only positive
29. Surveillance In Glen Greenwald s TED Talk
Glen Greenwald starts his TED talk with a scenario that the majority of people are
familiar with. When a person thinks they are alone, they do something
embarrassing, and someone else sees. He then turns this scenario around to the
idea that people will do something, whether it s good or not, as long as nobody sees
them. This is where the concept of mass surveillance comes into play. The common
response to mass surveillance is basically that if a person isn t doing anything wrong
then they have nothing to hide. One of Greenwald s main point on why this is a
such a destructive mindset, is because it means there is only two kinds of people,
good and bad. The good people have nothing to hide, meaning the high amount of
surveillance doesn t matter

The college process can be one that is very long and difficult, especially for student

on your future with many factors to consider throughout the process. For me, the
three big factors that contributed to my decision to attend Miami were my swim
career, my academic goals, and the amazing people and staff that make up Miami
University. Swimming has been a part of my life since I was six years old, and it
has only become a bigger part of my life as I got older. Interestingly enough, I hated
swimming during the first couple years and if it wasn t for my parents forcing me
to stick with it, I would have quit. But, I started to grow an appreciation for the
sport as I made some of my best friends through my team and having a lot of fun

have had some of my greatest memories through competitions such as the state meet
my senior year when my team won the state meet. My team got a National record
and numerous state records and it was one of the greatest moment of my life and is
a big reason why I decided to continue my swim career in college. During my
recruiting trip to Miami, I knew almost instantly that it was the place for me. The
swim team was very close knit and I knew it was an environment where I could
continue to make some of my closest friends. The coaches and facilities proved to me
that this was a team that was

the patient to fully contribute to defining the problem that is just what is concerned

34. The Trials Of Salem Witch Trials
Even though the Salem witch trials were made to seem formal, they were actually
subjective and not based on fact. Since there were multiple people being accused
of witchcraft, the trials were short and quick to sentence. The witch trials lasted
less than a year. The first arrests were made on March 1, 1692, and the final
hanging day was September 22, 1692. The Court of Oyer and Terminer was
dissolved in October of 1692. The Salem Witch Trials occurred in the spring of
1692, when a group of young girls in Salem Village, Massachusetts seemed to be
possessed by the devil. The public insisted that several local women were guilty of
witchcraft. A wave of frenzy traveled throughout the colonial part of Massachusetts,
causing a special court to convene to hear the cases of those accused of witchcraft.
Thereafter over 150 men, women, and children were accused over the several
months of the trials. In addition, one man was crushed to death; seven others died in
prison, and the lives of many others were changed drastically. The majority of the
accused and hung revolved around the women of Salem. By September 1692, the
frenzy began to subside due to public opinion against the trials. The Massachusetts
General Court then declared the guilty verdicts invalid and provided indemnities to
the victims families. Reverend Samuel Parris moved to Salem Village with his wife
Elizabeth, his daughter Betty, niece Abigail Williams, and his Indian slave Tituba

35. Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT)
Key Concepts Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) is described as a form of
therapy which focuses seeking solutions for clients and not trying to establish the
clients actual problem. (Corey, 2016). During treatment the therapist will not
concentrate on the problems affecting the patient but rather the activities that are
helping the client. (Gehart, 2009).
Not one person is acknowledged for developing the Solution Focused Brief Theory.
Many different people played a vast role in developing this solution creating theory.
It is however believed that Steve de Shazer and Insoo Kim berg where the initial
founders. (Corey, 2016). Behaviour and cognitive behavioural treatment helped form
the foundation of SFBT. The approaches revealed that changing actions and thoughts
have a positive influence on people s lives. (Reichenber Seligman, 2010).
Solution focused brief theory concentrates on four main concepts.
The first concept states that if it ain t broke, don t fix it (Bryan, 2015). SFBT focuses
on reducing past experiences and concentrates on the client s strengths. Problem
solving is almost irrelevant; behaviours are moulded to create solutions to the
problems. SFBT replaces the unwanted thoughts, emotions, and behaviours with
alternatives. The attention is not on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

as they have been proved to work well. The therapy will identify occurrences of when
the problem does not occur. Therapists concentrate on the positive areas and not the

lives (Corey, 2016). Ultimately the good behaviours will take over from the bad

Translation shift is common occurrence that we can find in translation. This thing
happens because whole languages in the world have different grammatical structure.
According to Peter Newmark shift (Catford s term) or transposition (Vinay and

strength. The Battle plan ran against his position of always having the best ground or
terrain from which to fight. Not only was General Lee misinformed, but his soldiers
were fighting barefoot, hungry, and low on ammunition, due to the naval blockade
imposed by Union naval forces. The Northern war effort benefited tremendously from
its superior naval forces, which allowed the Union to implement and maintain an
effective blockade of Southern ports2. The South was an agricultural society and the
North was more industrial. Consequently, the South had to import much of its
armaments
The Union Army had infinitely more supplies all through the war than the South, due
to the North being a heavy industrial and manufacturing center. A derivative of the
North s success of the civil war was their abundance of materials needed for proper
warfare. Their soldiers were well prepared in terms of ammunition, nutrition, and
clothing where as the south was not well equipped at all. Unfortunately for the South,
the North positioned its naval ships to block foreign supplies and trade; in hopes to
starve out the confederate Army, whom were already suffering. This was detrimental
to the South, due to already problematic transportation problems. The train rail
system in the South at this point had different sizing and regulation per state, making

45. Terry Fox Short Biography
Thirty two streets, one mountain, one thousand one hundred and sixty four cancer
research grants and a colossal $451 737 662 have been invested in cancer research
(Scrivener, 1.) However, Terry Fox is conquering the biggest mountain of them all:
cancer. Terry hopes to raise awareness for a worthy but neglected cause and has now
decided to run across Canada to fund a cure for cancer. Terry ran his marathon of
hope with a prosthetic leg after receiving news that his right leg needed to be
amputated fifteen centimeters above his right knee. Through his tremendous physical
challenge, he has overcome the discomfort caused by his prosthetic leg. While
running this marathon, Terry gives hope and inspiration to youth and adults

46. Biography Of Babe Ruth
George Herman Ruth Jr. also known as Babe Ruth was born on February 6, 1895
in Baltimore, Maryland. When Babe Ruth was little his parents worked long hours
so his parents were not able to control him. He was getting into trouble a lot around
town and skipping school. When he was 7 years old he was sent to a school for boys.
This is where he learned to play baseballat. He was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles.
He was traded to the Boston Red Sox. He was a pitcher in Boston and he won a
world series there as the number one pitcher. Then he was traded to the New York
Yankees. He became the best home run hitter in the history of Major League baseball
until Hank Aaron broke the record in the 70 s. Babe Ruthwas always good with the
kids and loved interacting with the fans. Babe Ruth used his pitching arm, hitting
ability, and good person to became the first superstar in america. Babe Ruth s
pitching ability was one of a kind. Babe Ruth could have been a Hall of Fame pitcher
even if he didn t go to the Yankee s and be one of the best hitters of all time. His
lifetime record as a pitcher was 94 46. His overall ERA or earned runs... Show more

He did the same things as many baseball players would do he bowled, hunted and
golfed as many ex baseball did. Babe Ruth after he retired never went to many
baseball games. He had became more of a father to his daughters and had given
them a midnight curfew. His daughter Julia had a severe strep throat one time and
needed a blood transfusion and Babe had the same blood type as her and gave her
some blood. Julia recovered soon and Babe walked her down the aisle three years
later. Babe became pretty good at golf he even once beat one of the best golfers in
the world Dick Chapman. The Dodgers had offered fifteen thousand dollars to Babe
Ruth to become the first base coach. He took the job. The attendance at the games
grew a lot because everyone wanted to catch a ball from him that he threw up into the
47. The Theorist That I Chose To Write About Is Jean Piaget.
The theorist that I chose to write about is Jean Piaget. His theory deals with the
nature of knowledge itself and how humans gradually come to acquire it. His theory
is basically known as the developmental stage theory. In the developmental stage
theory there are four different stages of the developmental theory: the sensorimotor,
preoperational, concrete operational and formal operational period.
Jean Piaget was born in NeuchГўtel (Switzerland) on August 9, 1896. He was the
oldest child of Arthur Piaget and Rebecca Jackson. At age 11, when he was just a
mere child at NeuchГўtel Latin high school, he wrote a short paper on an albino
sparrow. This short notice is usually the start of an intelligent scientific career made
of over 60 books ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He died in Geneva on September, 1980.
Piaget s theory consisted of three different stages: Sensorimotor, Preoperational,
Concrete Operational, and Formal Operational. I ll start out by talking about the
first one, sensorimotor. During the sensorimotor stage, infants and toddlers acquire
knowledge through sensory experiences and manipulating objects. It was his
observations of his daughter and nephew that heavily influenced his conception of
this stage. At this point in development, a child s intelligence consists of their basic
motor and sensory explorations of the world. Piaget believed that developing
object constancy, the understanding that objects continue to exist even when they
cannot be seen, played an important role at this point of development. By learning
that objects are separate and distinct items and that they have a presence of their
own outside of what an individual perceives it to be, children are then able to
begin to attach names and words to objects. The next stage in the developmental
theory is the Preoperational stage. At this stage, kids learn through pretend play
but still struggle with logic and taking the point of view of other people. They also
often struggle with understanding the ideal of constancy. For example, a
researcher might take a lump of clay, divide it into two equal pieces, and then give a
child the choice between two pieces of clay to play with. One piece of clay is rolled
into a compact ball
48. Wastewater Technician
Not many people know where the water that we use in our everyday lives goes to
and how it gets treated and comes back to us. Wastewater technicians are specialized
technicians who treat wastewater or process or dispose sewage. These technicians
are very important to the environment because they purify the water and bring it back
to the environment making it a healthier and cleaner place. One of the most popular
cities for wastewatertechnicians is Providence,RI. Wastewater technicians are needed
we depend on them to help clean the water. Employment rate for wastewater
technicians is projected by 8% from 2012 to 2022 about as fast as the average for all
occupations. These men have many other duties than just clean wastewater they

mechanical skills. Wastewater technicians operate a lot of machinery everyday so
that skill that they use not only it could relate to their job but in their life if they
quit that job they already have some experience with machinery. Another great
thing working in this career you will become a good observer these technicians
observe many data they observe a lot of the water doing a lot of testing and see the
progression of wastewater and look at a lot of meters and gauges. Becoming a
wastewater technician you will become more detail oriented you manage to
monitor everything and pay close attention to some things and they learn how
everything works. Like all jobs there are pros and cons but becoming a wastewater
technician you will have to sacrifice some things first is your health. In the a plant

chance of getting ill. These technicians are surrounded by loud noise and dangerous
gases the hallways might be slippery and you could fall as well. Another sacrifice
you will have to make is your time. Wastewater

the birth year of mercy for all things natural, wild, and free? Why does Leopold
give it that name? * The year 1865 is the birth year of all things natural, wild, and
free. Leopold gives it this name because in that year, John Muir offered to buy from
his brother, who then owned a farm 30 miles East of Leopold s oak, a sanctuary for
wildflowers that had gladdened his youth. His brother declined but could not suppress
the idea. (February, pg. 17) 2) According to Leopold, which has greater value things

Leopold outwits the great trout at the Alder Fork by walking upstream, dropping
his dry fly into the stream at his feet and pay out line to let it drift towards the trout

50. The Old South In The Rose For Emily
In the Rose for Emily, there is a present struggle between the new south and old
south. The two main characters in the story are Emily Grierson and Homer
Barron. Emily represents the old south while Homer represents the new south.
Emily has been raised by her father who follows the old south rules very strictly, so
therefor she acts as if she still lives in the south. Homer on the other hand is a
Yankee and is seen as an underclass in the south. The old south reflects very heavily
on Emily as she follows the rules very strictly. She follows the etiquette, the rules,
and the customs. Emily clings to the past in a strong way as many southern people
do. She refuses to pay her taxes for Colonel Sartoris told her she did not have to pay
them. The

acknowledging they no longer have a home in Saigon. I open Mother s white
handkerchief Inside lies my mouse bitten doll, her arms wrapped around the limp
fuzzy body of his chick. I tie it all into a bundle... I regret not having my doll as
soon as it sinks into the sea. (86) In this quote, the bundle is symbolic of the familys
attachment to Saigon. After the lowering of Saigon s flag, the family, recognising
they no longer have a home in Saigon, throw the bundle into the ocean. Later on, in
the poem Gift Exchange Day Pam gives HГ a doll. This on its own wouldn t stand
out; however, HГ has not only replaced the doll, but Titi with Pam, her brother

Year of the Dragon , HГ begins her prayer by praying for her family, praying for
Brother KhГґi to hatch an American chick. implying she wishes to have a life like
she had in Saigon she had before because she feels Alabama is her home. Further,
on the next page, she writes this year I hope I truly learn to fly kick, not to kick
anyone so much as to fly This second quote shows she wants to stay in Alabama,
planning for a future there, believing she can accomplish her goals there. That she
can grow. As they are presented with opportunities, HГ and her family begin to
dream of their futures in Alabama, indicating they ve made Alabama their

Sexuality in Steinbeck s The Chrysanthemums
Reading over this excellent story once more, I am again filled with
the same emotion (if it can be called that) that I experienced when first
reading it. Steinbeck planned for that. In a letter to George Albee in
1933, Steinbeck comments on this story and his interest in Albee s opinion
of it. ...It is entirely different and is designed to strike without the
reader s knowledge. I mean he reads it casually and after it is finished
feels that something profound has happened to him although he does not know
what nor how. I knew after reading this, that Steinbeck is truly a marvel.

He doesn t quite catch
onto the eroticism of the story, and in stead, chooses to focus on the more
crude innuendoes. ...The chrysanthemum stalks seem to be phallic symbols,
and Eliza s over eager snipping of them suggests castration. Then in the
rooting bed, Eliza herself becomes masculine, inserting the little crisp
shoots into open, receptive furrows (Hughes 235). He goes on explaining
how the shoots became Eliza s children and how she communicates with the
tinker on how to care for them. This makes perfect sense, but Eliza seems
more concerned with the loss of her own life. For too long, the
chrysanthemums have served in place of children. She is looking into
reclaiming her own life, not finding another electric connection to live
her life through. Hughes seems to ignore this, because all women by nature
53. want to procreate and have children, right? The androgyny of Eliza s
character, however, would suggest otherwise. She isn t as pulled by that
biological need as Hughes would suggest.
Elizabeth E. McMahan is strong in saying that although people will
agree that The Chrysanthemums is a story of a woman s frustration, no one
can adequately explain why. McMahan attributes the frustration to her
unhappiness with her marriage. She explains that although she and Henry
have a relationship of mutual respect, he has no gift

Essay
I completed my second Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experience at Walgreens
Pharmacy in Tallahassee, FL. Over the course of three weeks, I worked under the
supervision of Aisha Wilder, PharmD, R.Ph. I also worked alongside two pharmacy
technicians and one pharmacy intern. Walgreens was founded in 1901 by Charles
R. Walgreens Sr. in Chicago, Illinois. The company has expanded to almost 8,000
stores nationwide. Walgreens goal was to provide superb customer service,
innovative merchandise and displays, provide merchandise and goods that the
customers desired and could afford, and to provide genuine value to the customers.
Walgreens want to champion everyone s right to be happy and healthy. There were
three pharmacists employed at my site. I had the opportunity to work with Dr.Wilder
and Dr. Phuong. There was a senior technician by the name of Santia who has been
working at this location for eleven years. This pharmacycatered to the local
community. Some customers that came into this particular pharmacy were college
students, middle aged individuals, and elderly patients. I interacted with college
students and elderly patients. Some prescriptions that were often filled included
medications for hypertension, oral contraceptives, and controls. I performed many
activities while working at this pharmacy. I filled prescriptions. I also assisted in
serving customers that came in the drive thru. I checked the voicemails and recorded
new prescriptions that were called in by
55. Video Gametop Case
Video game retailer GameStop Corp. (GME) reported better than expected
earnings for the first quarter of fiscal 2016. The revenue met the analysts
estimates. However, due to weak second quarter outlook, the shares of GameStop
fell 3.94% to close at $28.80 on Friday. The earnings report, on the other hand,
reflected some vital positives about the company. When the market begins to
ponder the earnings report in detail, as explained below, there is a high probability
of seeing a rise in the share price. The Dallas, Texas based company reported a
decline in revenue to $1.971 billion, from $2.06 billion in the similar period last
year. The first quarter revenue was in line with the estimate of analysts. GameStop

Similarly, revenue from the sales of mobile phones and consumer electronic goods
increased 41%. Thanks to the acquisition of ThinkGeek, the sales of collectible
rose 250% in the first quarter. Digital content currently contributes 17% of the total
revenue of the company, while the mobile and consumer electronics contribute
10% to the total revenue. The company anticipates a 4% to 7% decline in the
second quarter same store sales with earnings in the range of $0.23 to $0.30 per
share. However, GameStop reiterated it s fiscal 2016 earnings outlook range of
$3.90 to $4.05 per share. With a share price of about $28, the forward PE ratio
works out to about 7. The company also offers an attractive dividend yield of 5%.
Thus, it is quite clear that the shares are now available at a bargain. So, we can
expect the share price to remain range bound with bullish bias during the second
quarter. The chart indicates a strong support for the stock at 28 levels. In fact, last
Friday, the stock failed in its attempt to break the support. Technically, the crossover
of the MACD s main line above the signal line also indicates increasing bullishness in

56. Writing Technique And Sentence Structure
MWP4 Final
Writing is a tool used in many subjects, and it has a great deal of importance in our
society. In this article written by Fish, the reader is given his perspective on what a
writing course should encompass. Fish begins the article by pointing out the problem
with english composition classes today. On the first page he mentions how one day
,while grading papers, he noticed that his graduate students did not write clean proper
sentences. Fish took it upon himself to find out why students lack simple writing
skills and how english composition professors can fix it? After finding the answers to
his questions Fish came to the conclusion that the only way to teach writing is by
focusing on technique and sentence structure. He believes that once a student masters
the skills it takes to write then they can write successfully. Writing is used daily and it
is important that we master the ability. Fish has a good argument that supports the
focus on writing technique, but he misses the importance of other writing factors
such as evidence, audience, and rhetoric.
Fish is no amauetur when it comes to writing or teaching writing. In the second
part of the article he gives the reader a resume showing off his full writing career. It
is clear that he puts high importance on writing. While he searched for a better way
to teach students how to write, he came to the realization that focusing on writing for
the sole purpose of writing is the best way to improve. The ACTA also agrees

on Australian native fauna. Canberra, ACT: Australian Nature Conservation Agency.
Content Summary
In this book the authors review impact of feral cats. Feral cats have major or minor
impacts on the Australian native wildlife some of which are competitive, amensal,
and predatory. The Competitive impact caused by cats is on large predatory
species by loss of prey. Amensal impact is most likely cause by transmission of
diseases. And predatory impact on native wildlife has been identified by historical
evidence. Many conclusions can be made from this evidence. Mammals make up a
large part of a feral cats diet. They target mammals weighing up to 2kg, and birds up
to 1kg. But they prefer prey weighing less then approximately 200grams in Mainland
Australia. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Australia has the worlds worst record for extinct mammals, 28 species and sub

these extinctions have been linked to feral cats and other introduced species. Cats

The US Fish and Wildlife Service has revealed that feral and domestic cats kill an

The Republic of Haiti has a unique and vibrant culture. It was once hailed as the

American island tells a story of slaves enduring resistance to the some of the most

second post colonial country in the Americas. However, the days of being the
wealthiest colony have since passed. Haitiis now considered to be the most

The events that transpired in the late 1980s were a catalyst for the international
community to intervene.
As an effort to promote democracy, the United States began influencing elections in
Haiti (Torgman). In 1990 with pressure mounting from the International community,
Haiti held a moderately fair presidential election. With over fifty percent of registered
voter participation; of that sixty seven percent of the voters supported the new
Haitian President Jean Bertrand Aristide. This was the first democratic election ever
held in Haiti since it achieved independence (Torgman). Therefore, the Haiti election
was a remarkable step towards democracy.
Nonetheless, the president s popularity faded soon after the election. Aristide lost
support from bureaucrats and the military. The loss of control of the government and
the lack of support resulted in a coup in 1991. The successful mutiny hurled the newly
formed democratic nation back into familiar political turmoil just after nine months
of Aristide being elected president. In response to the coup, the Organization of
American States (OAS) suspended economic relations, while the United States
responded by enforcing trade embargoes and freezing Haiti s accounts (Torgman).
The OAS urged all neighboring states to isolate Haiti by instituting hemisphere wide
restrictions. The plan was implemented to restore democracy in Haiti but resulted in
harmful
