The Band Saw
A Bandsaw is a saw with a long blade
that consists of a continuous band of
metal with saw teeth, stretched between
two or more wheels generally used in
woodwork and metalwork.

General Safety
•Wear your safety glasses at all
times
•Take off all jewelry
•Do not wear loose clothing
•Make sure you are the only
person in the safety zone when
operating the bandsaw.

path (off to one side)
•Clear scrap or cut material with a
brush. Do not use your hands.
•Use a push stick (not your fingers) to
push material that is close to the
blade when cutting.

Ripping
Ripping is defined as cutting along the
materials length OR cutting with the
grain.
Cross Cutting
Cross cutting is defined as cutting the
material’s length OR cutting across the
grain
Mitering
A miter is defined as cutting the
material’s length at an angle OR cutting
across the grain at an angle.
Resawing
Resawing is defined as cutting the material’s
thickness. This allows a person to get
multiple thin boards out of a piece of wood.
Freehand Cutting
Freehand cutting is defined as cutting on
the band saw without the use of a guide to
cuts arcs, angles, etc.

• When freehand cutting, it is recommended to
make Relief Cuts when cutting sharp curves to
avoid twisting the blade.
• Cut on the waste side of your layout line.
