The Asante (Ashanti) Kingdom developed in 1670s in West Africa and grew to control the gold fields and slave trade in the region. Under King Osei Tutu, the Asante conquered neighboring chiefdoms and centralized control over the gold mines and slave trade routes. Osei Tutu established Kumasi as the capital and instituted the Golden Stool as a symbol of his divine authority over the newly formed Asante Kingdom. The Asante Kingdom flourished as a major regional power through the slave trade until being conquered by Europeans in the late 19th century.
