The document discusses the historical role of American public research universities in enhancing regional economies, developing human capital, and contributing to civic culture. It argues that in the 21st century, universities must fulfill this mission through interdisciplinary research, broad public education, and holistic engagement strategies. A case study of the University of California San Diego highlights how it contributes to business growth, talent development, and civic culture through initiatives like industry partnerships, executive programs, and community outreach. Sample metrics are provided for measuring universities' engagement with their surrounding regions.

Changes in the global economy have posed challenges to many education providers. This has created a demand for innovative international education and training options, a demand which institutions have been unable to fulfil because of financial and resource constraints and a lack of pedagogical and program-design expertise. Eridux can assist institutions in crafting solutions to these challenges through institutional innovation, creative program design.

Key Message: We need an open peer-to-peer network to connect the stakeholders (e.g. Bitcoin), create synergies from the dispersed resources (e.g. BOINC), and multiply the opportunities along the chain. We need the Open Source University of the future.
This is a presentation by Dada Robert in a Your Skill Boost masterclass organised by the Excellence Foundation for South Sudan (EFSS) on Saturday, the 25th and Sunday, the 26th of May 2024.
He discussed the concept of quality improvement, emphasizing its applicability to various aspects of life, including personal, project, and program improvements. He defined quality as doing the right thing at the right time in the right way to achieve the best possible results and discussed the concept of the "gap" between what we know and what we do, and how this gap represents the areas we need to improve. He explained the scientific approach to quality improvement, which involves systematic performance analysis, testing and learning, and implementing change ideas. He also highlighted the importance of client focus and a team approach to quality improvement.
We all have good and bad thoughts from time to time and situation to situation. We are bombarded daily with spiraling thoughts(both negative and positive) creating all-consuming feel , making us difficult to manage with associated suffering. Good thoughts are like our Mob Signal (Positive thought) amidst noise(negative thought) in the atmosphere. Negative thoughts like noise outweigh positive thoughts. These thoughts often create unwanted confusion, trouble, stress and frustration in our mind as well as chaos in our physical world. Negative thoughts are also known as “distorted thinking”.

The American Research University Serving Society - Mary L. Walshok Ph.D
1. The American Research University
Serving Society
Mary L. Walshok, Ph.D.
University of California San Diego

December 2016
2. The historical roots of the American Public
Research University are deeply embedded
in the notion of a university as an institution
which;
a) enhances regional economies; b)
develops human capital through education
and training; c) contributes to civic culture
and the sustainability of a democratic
society.
2
3. Historically through devices
such as cooperative extension,
schools of continuing
education, offices of public
service and outreach, this
mission has been fulfilled.
3
4. The imperatives of the 21st
century ever-changing global
political economy have
catalyzed American Universities
to fulfill this mission in new
ways.
4
5. 21st Century Imperatives
1) The central research questions and human
development issues of our time require
interdisciplinary and cross-functional
approaches to research, teaching and
learning.
2) Without broad, public understanding of
change and the new realities of change, it is
impossible to implement economic
development or human development
initiatives at the local level.
5
6. 3) This means that engagement strategies
need to be holistic, addressing
simultaneously civic culture, human
development and economic development. It
requires connecting meaningful
conversations among multiple stakeholders
in the knowledge enterprise, both on campus
and in the community.
6
7. 4) Successful Implementation Depends on:
A commitment from senior leadership and processes which build
institution-wide buy-in, i.e. strategic planning
Business models which enable engagement activities; organizing
and financing 21st century engagement
Leveraging existing assets and enhancing investments to
produce results
Recognizing the need for a new kind of knowledge worker: the
boundary spanner, the linker, facilitator, integrator role
Convening diverse stakeholders in conversations and the co-
creation of initiatives with shared goals and shared metrics
Assuring a wide circle of co-investors
7
8. The Concept of Engagement
Engagement is a very different phenomenon
than outreach.
It assumes;
a) that important knowledge exists not only in the
university but in the society, organizations and everyday
practice.
b) it recognizes that university anchored basic research
and knowledge development are enhanced and enriched
by multiple forms of knowledge.
c) it organizes activities in a manner which harvests and
integrates rather than simply disseminates knowledge.
