Static charge is electrical charge that collects in one place, often from objects rubbing against each other. It results from the transfer of electrons between objects, giving one a positive charge and one a negative charge. Materials that allow easy movement of electrons are conductors, while insulators do not. Van de Graff generators produce large static charges through friction between a moving belt and rollers. While static charge has applications, it can also be dangerous if a large charge builds up and discharges.
