CBI annual dinner in Sheffield 5 mar 2020 with Founders4School's keynoteSherry Coutu CBE
I was honoured to be asked to speak at the CBI's annual dinner in Sheffield on the 5th of March. While there, I highlighted how founders4schools and workfinder worked with communities throughout the UK to develop and sustain learning and to drive economic growth. I spoke about our use of AI and ML so that we supported the learning and development of teachers who were not expert in local labour market economics so that they felt more comfortable reaching out to the business community and guiding students in their classrooms about roles they might hold in business in the future. I spoke about how the endorsement of the CBI in Scotland had brought about more than 30% of all children nation-wide benefitting from our services and how in some communities all the students had met business volunteers in their classrooms, while in others, none had. We share the dream of reducing regional disparity so that all students in all cities, towns and villages meet business leaders in their classrooms at least once per term. No one should be left behind - and together we can bring this about.
Thank you for your considered support and lovely to see so many of you last night at the Royal Society for our annual round-up for Ambassadors and Advisors.
I was pleased to be able to report our progress and outline our plans for the next 12 months and am very grateful to you for all your suggestions which we will take on board and report to you on progress.
Key asks were as follows:
1. Please feel free to use this presentation (attached) in conversations you have with educators, governors, local government etc - as you know, it is packed full of data and evidence!
2. Please let me know if you can think of any company or individual who you think we should approach to sponsor our Annual Awards Ceremony, which is upcoming on the 13th of September and being held at the Crick Institute. A one-pager pdf is attached with all the information we think you might need.
3. I mentioned we were looking to hire several engineers so we could reach more young people with our programmes - if you can help with that in the form of a referral or secondment, please please please do so
4. Please save the 13 September as a special date for our Educator Awards and the 6 Dec our next Advisor / Ambassador meeting.

NEED TO FOCUS ON SKILLS DEVELOPMENT – TRANSFERABLE - Education , employment or training – positive and sustained destinations.
Policy makers The Skills Strategy, Skills for Scotland sets out our ambition, our priorities and the challenges that face us in delivering Curriculum for Excellence – challenges in developing the skills of every individual in Scotland. We all know that we need to equip individuals with skills that are flexible enough to meet the needs of today, and respond to the demands of tomorrow. We are going through huge educational reform in Scotland to ensure that our teaching is relevant and person centred and that every young person gets the opportunity in the way that best meets their individual needs.
Determined to Succeed comprises four key strands to truly embed enterprise education into our schools. Our young people have the opportunity to experience : Enterprising teaching and learning linked to the world of work – in classrooms across West Dunbartonshire teachers are forming partnerships with employers to help them put learning into context Work related learning is helping many of our young people experience the work place in a relevant and meaningful way. It helps them to understand the reality of going to work every day, what it means to be part of a team, the practicalities of solving problems and making decisions in a real working environment and the impact their behaviour has on others. For those young people who, for a number of reasons, find it difficult to engage with mainstream education programmes like MCMC extended work experience and support programmes, ASDAN and xlerate run with the support of the Princes Trust Scotland rekindle their enthusiasm and in many cases reengage them in their formal education in a way that meets their needs Entrepreneurial learning gives them the opportunity to experience the thrills, excitement and the hard work of developing their own business through programmes like Young Enterprise . With the support of PSYBT we have developed a range of entrepreneurial case studies that help teachers demonstrate the benefits and the hard work associated with setting up and running their own business this year in West Dunbartonshire one of our secondaries Dumbarton academy won through to the Scottish Finals in this very programme. and threaded through all of this appropriately focused career education which helps young people make informed and appropriate career choices and opens their eyes to the variety of careers available to them. In west Dunbartonshire we have enhanced Career education through extra SDS staffing in all of our secondary schools, IMPACT. Employer engagement is central to the delivery of all aspects. Working with employers brings learning to life, it helps young people to understand the relevance of their learning to life beyond school and helps better prepare them for the world of work. New work experience programme which i will speak about exemplifies effective partnership working with employers to give personalised programmes of employability programmes for all of our young people in the transition stages of higher/further education, employment or training.
How West Dunbartonshire are ensuring enterprise is embedded across all curricular areas; The development of enterprise knowledge, skills and attitudes can occur in all subjects within the curriculum. Opportunities for pupils to gain experience of using skills such as teamwork, project management and creativity can be found in specific subject areas. This enterprising approach to teaching and learning has been addressed through: Audit of approach and understanding of EiE - enterprising approach to teaching and learning gap identification in practice skill development to support improvement in practice for example: CPD Session 2008/09 over 400 teachers including class, principal teachers, head teachers and learning support staff have been involved in a range of authority led training programmes in relation to Enterprise in education. This endeavours to develop the skills base of teaching and ancillary staff and the recognition of the enterprising approach to teaching and learning. The range of these programmes : An introduction to Enterprise Enterprising approach to teaching and learning Enterprise in education and A Curriculum for Excellence. Enterprise and Eco Schools Co-operative learning academies Development of subject ideas and cross curricular enterprise delivery Presentations to Principal teachers and departments on the enterprising approach to teaching and Learning -Leadership for an enterprising classroom. Use of ICT / technology to develop the enterprising approach to teaching and learning through production of curricular materials through which delivery embraces the approach.
Vocational programmes Colleges/FE/Training providers Clydebank and Anniesland Colleges – Skills for work Glasgow Caledonian University Fashion Brand retailing Glasgow University – EDGE GTG Training Ltd – training provider MVE Strathclyde University – Young Enterprise To support experiential and thematic approaches to delivery of the curriculum Supporting the development of wider achievement and recognition Development of leadership at all levels Adding depth to curriculum areas through the use of business partners, support initiatives such as financial education, technology rapid response challenges and lietracy and numeracy eg Reading and Number partners with NAG.
In West Dunbartonshire we are committed to helping our young people develop self-confidence, selfreliance and ambition to achieve their goals in work and life. West Dunbartonshire Council's Vocational Programme mainly provides a range of one and twoyear courses which have a focus on employability. The courses offered lead to recognised SQA or City & Guilds qualifications. Vocational courses aim to increase both the future employability of our young people and develop skills for work and skills for life. Our aspiration is for all young people in our schools to have developed the skills required to be better prepared for the world of work. Courses currently on offer are Construction, Early Education and Childcare, Tourism, Hairdressing, Hospitality, Automotive Vehicle Maintenance, Rural Skills, Sport and Recreation, Fashion Brand Retailing and Photography. Courses are delivered in partnership with Clydebank College, Anniesland College, Glasgow Caledonian University, West Dunbartonshire Council Leisure Services, Land Services and Skillseekers Unit, schools, partnership agencies and employers in the private and voluntary sector.
Employability Skills – The Way Forward Following the outcome of the reviews undertaken by both West Dunbartonshire Council and Nationally, the former ‘Work Experience’ Programme will be replaced by a new Employability Skills Programme. Both reviews outlined the need for a restructuring of the programme to ensure that employability skills were more focused, better embedded and relevant. The programme will be rolled out over the next 3 years:- This year 2010 S4 Summer Leavers Next year 2010 S5 Winter Leavers (Aug/Dec) 2011 S5 Summer Leavers (All Year) In 2012 S6 will be offered a range of options – some still to be developed .
In West Dunbartonshire council we have a strong commitment to developing our teachers as leaders of learning. Session 2008/09 Over 300 teachers including class, principal teachers, head teachers and learning support staff have been involved in a range of authority led training programmes in relation to Enterprise in education.
