This document defines key sociological terms related to norms and sanctions in society. It distinguishes between societal values, norms, prescriptions that tell people what to do, and proscriptions that tell people what not to do. It further defines folkways as less important norms with informal penalties, and mores as important norms with heavier penalties. Laws are norms enforced by the government. Sanctions encourage norm following and can be positive or negative, formal or informal, physical or psychological, economic or non-economic.
