SIMPLE AND COTINUOUS
TENSES
Use the simple Present tense to state facts and describe habitual actions.
Many Americans work part-time (fact)
Judy swims three time a week (habitual action)
• In the simple present tense, use the base form of the verb with, I, you, we and they.
I work part-time
• Use the base form + -s or –es with he, she, and it
Doris works part-time
Use the simple past tense to talk about past action and facts.
To form the simple past tense of a regular verb, add -ed to the base form. If
the base form ends in -e, add -d. If the base form ends in a consonant plus y,
change the y to i and add –ed.
From questions in the simple past tense with the auxiliary did + subject +
based form
Form negative statements in the simple past with did + not (didn´t) + base
form
Daphne´s plane landed half an hour ago
Diana talked to her on the phone
Play – played; study - studied
Did Diana´s phones ring last night?
We didn´t take a vacation las year
Basic form:
Subject + will + verb (present form)
Be Going To
One way to express the future is to use a form of be (am/is/are) + going to +
the base
I will clean up mi room
I think it will rain
I can´t go to the meeting tomorrow. I´m going to be with my family
Use the present continuous to talk about actions in progress now.
Form the present continuous with a form of be and a present participle
Make negative statements with not: I´m not working today
Some statements in the present continuous describe activities over a period
of time:
They´re making pizza
Bob is working
We aren´t driving to work this week
The past continuous shows an action that was in progress in the past. Form
the past continuous with was or were and the present participle.
Use the past continuous past tense to show one een interrupting an action in
progress
The man was singing
I was sleeping
We mainly use the Future Continuous to indicate that we will be in the
middle of doing something in a specified time in the future.
In an hour, I will be sitting in front of my TV
Beatrice will be getting married very soon
