Running Head: ACTIVITY BASED COSTING
Activity Based Costing

Abstract
This paper provides a brief presentation of Activity Based Costing methodology, how is used as well
as its short comings.
Activity Based Costing
Activity based costing (ABC) methodology is an instrument designed to provide accountants and
managers with valuable costing information that will allow them to make sound strategic decisions. It
is used as a secondary methodology rather than a replacement for the company s primarily costing
system. The ABC methodology identifies activities in an organization and for each activity it assigns a
cost. The cost reflects the actual resource consumption by each activity that has been identified.
Under a traditional system, overhead cost is allocated to an activity based on hours or rates for direct
labor or machine usage. However, this approach does not clearly indicate how much overhead cost
will be needed in order to complete a job through a particular function. ABC methodology is to be
used as an alternative to traditional accounting where a business s overhead costs (indirect costs such
as electrical energy consumption for heating or cooling, or indirect cost associated with marketing) are
allocated as a proportion of direct costs, to an activity. This approach is unsatisfactory because there
can be cases where two activities could absorb the same direct costs

Mexican Social Realists and Harlem Renaissance
Mexican Social Realists and Harlem Renaissance
Poverty has always been an issue throughout centuries. In most areas living conditions were horrible
due to wars, and corruption within cities and states. Most families lost their male sons to the draft of
the war at the ages of 6 years or older. Families struggled and did what they had to, to maintain a
home as well as food for their families. Because of this Social Realism was successful. Social Realism
was an international movement that many artists and composers where a part of. This movement
highlights inequalities of capitalism, and gave the chance to these artists and composers to express
everyday living conditions of the working class and the poor through their work. Diego Rivera is one
of those artists that through his work showed the struggle of the poor, he was one of the most famous
muralists in the Mexican Social Realism. The Harlem Renaissance was known as the New Negro
Movement where African Americans where forced out of Southern states to the urban areas due to the
Great Migration. Jacob Lawrence was one of those that expressed his thought on the Great Migration
describing it as the push and pull factors.
Diego Rivera was known for a muralist of the Mexican Social Realism. This movement was the
brutality of WWI. It attacked capitalist. Rivera was a communist, he believed in the common
ownership in social, political, and economic ideology that strived to maintain social order. One

Managing Remote Sales Teams Offer Unique Challenges
Awesome sales teams aren t just found in office cubicles.
A sales member might attend a CEO meeting in California, play a round of golf with an important
client in Georgia, or cold call prospective leads from an apartment in Barcelona.
Technology makes remote work more accessible. The office now encompasses different countries and
time zones.
A Stanford University research study found that employees are 13 percent more productive when
working remotely. However, managing a remote sales team isn t easy.
People work at their own pace, creating disconnection among team members. When problems occur, it
s not as simple as getting up from your desk and walking down the hall to get clarification face to
face.
Managing remote sales teams offer unique challenges, but you can overcome them. Let s explore four
ways to lead your remote team to more closed deals.
1. Set Clear Expectations
When setting expectations, sales employees are encouraged to meet higher performance levels.
A recent Gallup poll of German workers found that when a manager sets clear priorities for their
employees about 38 percent of workers feel engaged and will strive to increase their work
performance.
Establish clear expectations for your team. It provides everyone a set standard to maintain.
The benchmark should include sales objectives, specific online procedures when working on leads,
and tips for managing time more efficiently.
Sales managers must be willing to hop on a Skype call with their team.

Reflection On Clinical Evaluation
This semester, through the use of clinical evaluation, I have learned how to be a better clinician. To
clarify, I have learned how to evaluate the interventions, measurement choices, implementation of
interventions and data collection process I practice with my clients to better understand how my
clients are responding to therapeutic treatment. The first experience with regards to clinical evaluation
I had began when I was required to complete the first immersion program report. In order to better
understand my positionality with clinical evaluation it is important to know that this school year, I am
interning with Henry Ittleson Center as a day treatment therapist. Henry Ittleson Center is a day and
residential child treatment center located in the Riverdale area of the Bronx. The agency services
children between the ages of 5 to 13 who are diagnosed with severe emotional and behavioral
disorders and require special education services. As a result of clinical evaluation being such a long
process, for the sake of this paper, I will be focusing on apprehension moments I encountered when
completing my immersion report such as frustrations I faced with my agencies limited
objectives/goals selection, frustrations with diagnosing children, difficulties with measurement
selection, biased results and quick glance at the progress made by my client since I began to evaluate
my own practices. My experiences with clinical evaluation formally began when asked to complete
section one of the immersion report, which includes brief synopsis of client, target problem, goals and
objectives. Initially, I found it quite easy to list out the target problem, goals and objectives because in
essence, I was taking this information straight from the data base system we use in the agency to file
our reports. However, as I started to reflect on this process with my immersion partner, I realized that I
was not required or expected by my agency to ask my client or my client s family what they wanted
me to identify as my client s goals and objectives for the year. As I went back into the system, I
recognized that all the objectives and goals available on the AVATAR (system we use to keep our
records) are dependent on the client s

A Doll s House Gender Essay
Throughout much of English literature, gender and sex have been carefully analyzed. Often, a literary
character can be identified as either male or female simply based on the character s behavior or on the
way they are described by the author. Gender is not the biological traits that society uses to assign a
person into either female or male; this is called sex. Gender is the repeated socialization over time that
leads men and women to fall into a false sense that they are acting naturally, rather than following a
socially constructed role. In A Doll House , Henrik Ibsen appoints specific stereotypical gender roles
to each of his characters to show how gender has been constructed by social expectations. One of the
most obvious issues that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Male roles in A Doll House are presented through two characters: Torvald Helmer and Nils Krogstad.
In the first place, Torvald Helmer is a mirror image of the stereotypical male gender. To him, social
expectations surrounding his gender must be met. He holds on to the belief that a man s role in
marriage is to protect and guide his wife. Also, Torvald believes that all husbands have a right to their
wives bodies. He asks Aren t I your husband ? (Isben 832) after Nora resists having sex with him. This
demonstrates how male figures of the 19th century thought they had all the power, especially when
behind closed doors. As Parker (2003) describes, in common Victorian society, the husband did not
view their wives as equals but rather an amusement or possession . Torvald enjoys the idea that Nora
needs instruction and is quite eager to show her how to dance the tarantella. Torvald is very
overbearing and treats his wife Nora like a doll. The Helmer household acts as an enclosure to shelter
the entire family from the cruelties of the outside world. Another stereotypical trait of Torvald Helmer
s is that he has a steady job and is very conscious of his appearance in the community. He has the
desire to stay in good rankings thus fires Krogstad from the bank as to not make [himself] ridiculous

Your plans for planting flowers should begin in the middle of winter. Landscaping for the birds is
begun by trees and bushes. Some flowers attract birds of certain types. The birds are not always in
need of the blossoms themselves. They are in need of the seeds which come later. The different types
of daisies form seeds which are generous and nutritious. The seeds are then left for the birds to feed
on. When the seed heads have been dried, you will get sparrows, finches, cardinals, and towhes. This
is why you should avoid deadheading all the blossoms once blooming is over. The blossoms will
appear first. In winter, your garden will bloom with finches and cardinals. Zinnias are easy flowers for
one to grow. Birds love them for their seeds. The colors that you choose are very important. The
zinnias will attract butterflies to your yard and these will provide food for the birds. Hummingbirds
These types of birds are easily drawn by the red color. To attract these birds, plant red flowers in your
garden. These birds usually check for anything red in your environment. Flowers of other colors can

Stratification Of Social Class And Youth And The Life...
Stratification of social class in the media
Social class stratification continues to have a very important role in the life of people living in the U.S.
and all around the world. The different class of people in the U.S. is based on several reasons. For this
essay, we are going to examine the socio economic background, level of education of the youth and
the life style of an individual. A good question is how does the social class stratification originates?,
why do middle class youths turn to be more successful than working class youths? Children get their
first exposure of what society is all about from their parents who is the primary group. The school,
teachers, and community serves as the secondary group and has an impact on the development of the
child. It is during the up bringing of a child that the mores of the society should be assimilated. Failure
to do so, the child becomes unproductive and feels rejected by the society and unfortunately, this child
might end up with a deviant character.
On average, educated people earn more than those who are not educated, and their wealth and
knowledge gain is passed to their generation. To have a quality life people need to be educated. The
more skills an individual acquires the better chances his/her has to be successful. The community and
the life style of a child affect his/her progress, the kind of neighborhood or friend a child makes will
influence the direction this child will take. Diverse communities hold different

E. Coli And Its Effects On The United States
E.coli outbreaks have steadily grown over the last few decades. An expansion in big farming has led to
E. coli not only being found in meat, but vegetation as well, due to waste runoff. This has increased
our need for adequate antibiotics that can fight bacteria, like E. coli. The best way to pinpoint which
antibiotics work is by measuring their ability to create antimicrobial agents or zones of inhibition.
When a paper disc that has been saturated in an antibiotic is inserted in a solution of E.coli and
medium, the zone of inhibition will be noted as the clear ring that forms around the disk. The
antibiotics efficacy is then determined by measuring each disk zone of inhibition, and comparing these
measurements to the zone measurements of an untreated specimen. If an antibiotic is to be deemed
sufficient for treating E. coli it should show a zone of inhibition that is at least double the size of the
untreated specimen.
On August 19th, 2015 this experiment was performed, by 6 separate lab groups. The experiment began
by measuring 1 Ml of E. coli into a pipette and pump, then placing the bacteria into a culture medium.
The E. coli and medium were then swirled together for a period of 15 minutes, until completely
mixed. This mixture was then poured into a petri dish and allowed to solidify for 45 minutes. After the
45 minute solidification time, 5 small paper disks were inserted into the dish. 4 of the disk contained
treatments of antibiotic and 1 was left untreated. The

Analysis Of Boccaccio s The Decameron
Throughout the various novelle of the Decameron there lies a rather conflicting role of women in
relation to the society that Boccaccio s Decameron was set in. From novella to novella the theme of
women s gender role fluctuates between misogynistic to feminist. It can be argued that Boccaccio was
a feminist ahead of his time or that he shared the traditional views towards women of 14th century
Italy. Overall, it is fair to say that Boccaccio does depict women as transcending men in many
respects, some of them being positive, and some negative. I believe there is a deeper meaning behind
Boccaccio view s towards women which I will elaborate on below. Giovanni Boccaccio was born in
Florence (Certaldo) in 1313. He was raised predominately by his mother and according to New
Advent Encyclopedia he was a steadfast son who greatly admired his mother and looked upon his
father with some disdain.(1) From what i ve read not much is known about Boccaccio s childhood and
as a result, reports mention Boccaccio s relationship with his father as being mediocre. Most sources
comment that Boccaccio was very close to his mother. I believe there is an important connection of his
relationship with his mother and the way he portrays women in the context of his writings. When
taking this connection into consideration, the gender roles depicted in the Decameron can be better
interpreted. Boccaccio s opinions on love and his subsequent writings were not only influenced by his
personal

Narrative Essay On Study With Children
Studying With Children!

Self esteem plays another important factor. You keep hearing his voice taunting, You ll never make it

Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys
Rochester and Antoinette are two characters that are both outsiders of their respective communities.
Antoinette is excluded from both the white and black communities, and eventually it leads to her
instability and uneasiness throughout the novel. While being excluded from the community isn t
dreadful enough, she suffers being called a white cockroach (23) and becoming an aberration through
her own husband s eyes, Rochester. Moreover, Rochester is ignored by his own family. His isolation
stems from the letter he sends to his father, stating that I will never be a disgrace to you or my dear
brother the son you love (70). His bitterness implies that his father favors his brother much more than
he favors Rochester. He is also separated from the black population, as he tells Antoinette that he
would never hug and kiss [a black person] (91). His haughty behavior eventually confines him from
the population on the island. Ultimately, Antoinette s and Rochester s struggles pushes these
characters to a new extreme in which it pushes Rochester to lock his wife in the attic and Antoinette to
write [her] name in fire red (53) by the end of the novel.
Throughout Wide Sargasso Sea, Jean Rhys magnifies the themes of madness and power by analyzing
Rochester s and Antoinette s interactions with one another to ultimately teach a lesson that can be
interpreted in many different ways. Their downfalls are created by the catastrophic conflicts with each
other and the environment around

A Comparison of A Modest Proposal, Tartuffe, and Candide
Writers use personality traits and events to change the classical ideals. Majority of the writer s focus is
to change people s attitude s. Jonathan Swift, Jean Baptiste Poquelin Moliere, Francois Marie Arquet
de Voltaire use characterization and plot to challenge the themes of the Neo Classical period.
In A Modest Proposal, Jonathan Swift challenges the Neo classical period by creating a sense of
instability in their way of thinking. He attacks the society by carelessly endorsing cannibalism in
hopes to help Ireland through their economic crisis. He demonstrates this by humbly proposing and
assuring that a young healthy child, well nursed, is, at a year old, a most delicious, nourishing, and
wholesome food. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Swift demands the audience to recognize the narrator s purpose having no other motive than the public
good of my country, by advancing our trade, providing for infant s, relieving the poor, and giving
some pleasure to the rich. (Swift 489) The speaker optimistically believes that his idea is for the best.
If Swift did not believe that his idea would not have a positive outcome he would not have suggested.
Regardless of Swift s inhumane suggestion, which is negative, he only tries to reveal the positive of
the situation. This feeling of insecurity is his way of disparaging the Irish and English government.
In Tartuffe, Moliere s use s plot to defend and oppose characters that symbolize and ridicule habitual
behavior s that was imposed during the neo classical time period. His work, known as a comedy of
manners, consists of flat characters, with few and similar traits, and that always restore some kind of
peace in the end. He down plays society as a whole by creating a microseism, where everyone in the
family has to be obedient, respectful, and mindful of the head of the home, which is played by the
father Orgon. Mariane shows her obedience when she replies To please you, sir, is what delights me
best. (Moliere 324,11) Shortly afterwards, Orgon commands Mariane to take Tartuffe as her husband
even though she is not interested in him at all. Orgon s command shows how men are dominate

Sailor Moon Research Paper
This article was written by Mary Grigsby with the intent to explain the massive worldwide
phenomenon of the manga, and later anime, Sailor Moon and how it was so effectively spread across
different cultures. Sailor Moon made its first appearance as a manga serialized in the magazine
Nakayosi before being adapted into an anime that began airing in March of 1992. The anime was
introduced to the United States in 1995, a year in which it was already the number one action show for
children in five other countries (Grigsby 59). Sailor Moon continued to grow in popularity with
musicals, films, CDs, video games, and status as a 1.5 billion dollar merchandise franchise (Grigsby
59). This merchandise was not limited to just the intended ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many manga and anime characters began to resemble westerners, such as Sailor Moon s blonde hair
and blue eyes, after the American occupation of Japan in which western physical looks were seen as
ideal (Grigsby 69). Sailor Moon s large eyes are also seen as romantic, innocent, and feminine, which
are desirable characteristics associated with women in Japan. However, Sailor Moon was still able to
transform and fight like a superhero with these juvenile characteristics. These characteristics are not
just desirable to the young girls who want to be as powerful and beautiful as Sailor Moon, but also are
adored by older men who see the Sailor Scouts as sexual playthings (Grisby 72). The internet has also
made Sailor Moon more readily available to both older men and for fans around the world who are
able to access translations of the manga, furthering Sailor Moon s status as a global commodity. In
conclusion, Sailor Moon had the potential for status as a global commodity because of how the anime
presented gender characteristics that can accepted in many different nations across cultural

Objective:
The objective of this experiment is to perform the simulation of the movement of solutes from a
higher concentration to a lower concentration within a given amount of time.
The goal of the exercise is to provide a simulation for the process of the facilitated diffusion of
glucose through a selectively permeable membrane.
Introduction:
Experiment #1 and #2 are meant to show the processes of Simple and Facilitated diffusion. Both the
solutes and water were used to show how they diffuse through a semi permeable ... Show more

Discussion:
The purpose of the first experiment was to test how different solutes moved through the membrane by
the process of Simple Diffusion. Different solutes proved to diffuse not only at a certain amount, but
also through a certain molecular weight. Curious as to why my hypothesis was not supported, I
wondered why certain solutes only diffused through certain membranes. Through research, I
concluded that the reasoning behind my observation is due to the fact that Non polar molecules can
dissolve in the non polar fatty acid chains of the membrane phospholipids, so therefore non polar
molecules have larger permeability constants than polar molecules (www.biology online.org). Also,
lipid soluble molecules can move through the membrane, where as non lipid soluble molecules cannot
pass through the lipid bilayer (www.biology online.org). These results also concluded that at a higher
MWCO, solutes take a much greater time to diffuse than molecular weights of smaller amounts.
The process of facilitated diffusion,

Concerns in the Game
Collegiate sports have progressed to one of the most highly profitable industries in the U.S. today.
Through the years, these institutions have developed, marketed, and optimized a method to generate
revenue of high levels. Yet, no one seems to have a problem with the fact that these players are being
utilized and objectified for their talents. Each athlete must give up more than they should, without
reasonable benefits. In fact, The University of Alabama made nearly $143.5 million in revenue alone
during the 2012 2013 year (Solomon). Exactly $0 went to the players for their in season efforts.
Players nowadays are highly recruited and not all of them are given large sums of money to receive a
degree from the highly acclaimed schools. In days past, athletes would be more than willing to make
any accommodations in order to play the game they love. However, over time it has become more and
more difficult. With the large amount of time spent in the classroom and on the field, players are
unable to work for much of the year. Fiscal issues is not all that is at stake when it comes the college
athletes today, but it is the major factor that turns this educational institution into a highly profitable
business. Young age athletes play for fun, exercise, friendships, and most importantly dreams.
Somewhere along the way we get lost in a maze of expectations. Coaches begin to reward our results
and punish our mistakes. To many players this negates the fun of the game. To others this

Evaluation Of Sme s Help Them Defend Their Network...
Abstract This project is a guide to which SME s can use to help them defend their network against
cyber criminals. It will cover all aspects of security that an SME should be using against the current
security threats that cyber criminals are using today. The guide will show how an SME can test their
networks security for functionality, so that they know everything is working as expected. Chapter 1:
Introduction This project is being undertaken to investigate and assess the mitigation techniques
required to secure the networks of Small to Medium Enterprises (SME s) against the major network
threats of today. Various steps need to be taken so that this project can achieve any results. The first
step to be taken is to research what an SME is and what an SME network entails. Next is to research
the current logical and physical network security technologies being used or those that are currently in
development. The key vulnerabilities that are found within SME networks are going to be reviewed
and possible mitigation techniques normally used to defend against these vulnerabilities will be
discussed. In order to achieve realistic results that can be used to advice SME s an experiment will be
undertaken to find out whether or not these mitigation techniques actually secure a SME type network
against key vulnerabilities such as those researched. In this process a typical SME network
environment will be created. A pen test will be undertaken on this test network, which

Major Risk Factors For Many Residents Living At St. Augustine
Risk Assessments
In general, floodplains is a major risk factor to many residents living in St. Augustine. In their
undeveloped state, floodplains play an important role in flooding. Natural floodplains reduce wind and
wave impacts and their vegetation stabilizes soils ( Flood hazard , n.d.). Floodplains can be recharged
in areas of groundwater and reduce the frequency and duration of low flows of surface water ( Flood
hazard , n.d.).
Some local natural floodplains in St. Augustine and St. Johns County are the Guana River State Park
and Anastasia State Park. According to the demographic profile of St. Augustine, many of the
residents live near those floodplain areas ( Flood hazard , n.d.). Documents of previous floods show
that St. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The effects and risks of flooding is a daily reality in much of St. Augustine. According to the
demographic profile, there are over 13,000 people living in St. Augustine, with drinking water wells
that are fouled by seawater (Simpson, 2015). In theory, one could conclude that many residents know
that a flood is very likely in to strike in their area (Simpson, 2015). With flood warnings in St.
Augustine making local newspaper as of lately, one could safely conclude that the community is
somewhat trying to make an effort towards awareness to the whole community both local and state.
Indicators of the Community Addressing the Issue
With seawater wells this could cause a problem if a flood was to occur. Making it even harder to
access water due to it being easily contaminated (Simpson, 2015). Communities like St. Augustine can
do only so much alone, being only a small community compared to others ( Sea rise , 2015). If the city
was to build a seawall, it could possible divert water to a neighbor city which would only further the
problem ( Sea rise , 2015).
Cities in Florida also lack the technology, money and manpower to keep back the seas by themselves (
Sea rise , 2015). Despite warnings from water experts and climate scientists about risks to cities and
drinking water, skepticism over sea level projections and climate change science has hampered
planning efforts at all levels of

What Is the Role of the Judiciary in a Democracy
Democracy is a system of governance, its origins dates back to Greece and ancient Athens between
421 and 322 B.C. Most Western countries changed their system of governance to a representative
democracy in the 19th century, mostly influenced by liberalism. Democracy, in Greek, means Power
to the People . In this system people vote for their president, choose from different parties. In an
authoritarian state, all powers are in the hand of one person, whereas in a democratic state, different
institutions are in charge of different powers. The government owns the executive, the parliament the
legislative and the judges the judiciary. The task of the judiciary is to settle conflicts between citizens

The application of the law may be a bit confused sometimes. For example, does a crime blamed on a
person really correspond to the definition of the crime such as we find it on the law? Are the proofs
given really acceptable? If yes, are the punishments planed by the law adapted with the crime? Those
are the kind of decision that the judge has to take, and it is very important that judges stay independent
from the rest of the government, as it is his main role in the democracy, the impartiality. That is what
we are going to study in the second part. In this second part we will study the role of the judiciary in a
Democracy. First of all, the judiciary is neutral. A judge doesn t show his belonging to any political
parties. He judges the crimes trying to be as neutral as he can. In a democracy this neutrality is very
important as neither the government nor any other parties can affect the judgement. The judiciary is
also independent in most of the countries. It doesn t depend on the executive or the legislative.
However, their collaboration is necessary for the well being of a democracy. The legislative makes the
law that the judiciary will apply on court, but this law needs to be accepted by the judges so they can
apply it in the best conditions. This independency is very important. In fact, the judges don t owe
anything to members of the executive or

Conventions of Nursery Rhymes
Conventions of Nursery Rhymes
The conventional nursery rhyme is a vehicle for educating children at an early age of development.
Originally constructed to help with language acquisition and understanding, these rhymes are often
characterized as very short poems designed specifically to teach children in one way or another (Grace
13 Sept 2013). The purpose of a nursery rhyme is to teach language to children by using different
techniques helping to stimulate their imagination, while at the same time introducing the skill of
memorization and comprehension of simple words (Zuralski). Many nursery rhymes are fashioned as
short poems with metrical rhythms, rhyme schemes and repetition of words or sounds. In the poems

For example, the words sand (2), and hand (4) are almost identical sounding words with the exception
of one letter being different. Rhymes like this are simple and can be remembered easily. Disyllabic
words on the other hand are slightly more challenging for children to pronounce due to the complete
change in spelling, for example river (1), and ever (3), requires changing the words completely, yet
they are still words that a child can easily follow because of the matching syllables.
Changing slightly to examine the repetition of words in this poem, it is quite similar to Young Night
Thought insofar as there are again two separate words being repeated three times. The first word that
Stephenson repeats throughout the text is the river (1) in the first, ninth, and thirteenth lines of the
poem. What is interesting in the placement of the word river in the first line is that it answers the
question posed in the title Where Go the Boats? The repetition of the word river allows a child listener
to associate it with the idea that boats can be found at the river, while at the same time identifying the
question being asked in the poem. A child will become familiar with the connection made between the
boats and the river through this constant repetition.
Another significant word that Stephenson repeats throughout this poem is the word Away (11). It is

Compare/Contrast of 2 Characters
Throughout the story of Candide, the author Voltaire uses many of the characters to portray important
things in life. The two characters that Voltaire used the most were Candide and Pangloss. Voltaire used
these two characters to represent a particular idea or folly that he had about the world. In the story
Candide, Voltaire is always portraying his own ideas by using the characters to illustrate his own
ideas. Candide and Pangloss represent the main idea of the story, which is Voltaire s folly of optimism.
Even though they both represent the main idea of the story Candide and Pangloss have many

Pangloss is the teacher of Cunegonde and Candide. Pangloss is a philosopher and supposed to be a
very educated man. Pangloss teaches Candide all about this certain philosophy that he himself lives
by. Voltaire explains Pangloss s philosophy like this, Pangloss gave instruction in metaphysico
theologico cosmolo nigology. He proved admirably that there cannot possibly be an effect without a
cause and that in this best of all possible worlds the baron s castle was the most beautiful of all castles
and his wife the best of all possible baronesses. It is clear, said he, that things cannot be otherwise than
they are, for since everything is made to serve an end, everything necessarily serves the best end.
Observe: noses were made to support spectacles, hence we have spectacles. Legs, as anyone can
plainly see, were made to be breeched, and so we have breeches. . . . Consequently, those who say
everything is well are uttering mere stupidities; they should say everything is for the best(pg. 4) What
Voltaire is trying to explain here is that Pangloss thinks that everything happens for a reason and even
though it may be something bad, it happens for the best. Pangloss teaches this philosophy with a
strong emphasis and he really believes in it.
In comparing these two characters, Candide and Pangloss have many similarities. One of the main
reasons for this is because Pangloss is Candide s philosophical teacher and Candide

Moral Values of Silas Marner and Godfrey Cass Essay
Justice is the quality of being just as well as complying with the principle of righteousness and also
performing one s moral obligations (Oxford Dictionary). Moral values are important in Silas Marner
throughout the novel as those people who do good deeds are rewarded while those who fail in their
moral duties to others are punished. As George Eliot was a religious person, she believed in fate and
providence as there was a higher being rewarding and punishing our conduct. This theme is portrayed
throughout the book and seen most prominently in the characters of Silas Marner and Godfrey Cass.

Silas Marner is the main protagonist in the book, although the reader is not given a good impression at
the start of the novel. He is full of greed and his only joy and pleasure is seeing his precious gold. This
can be backed up by the quote Silas lived in solitude, his guineas rising in the iron pot (Chapter 2 page
19). His reaction when his gold is stolen is that of disbelief. It is as if one of his family members has
died. The quotes His heart leapt violently and His trembling hand prove this. This incident is very
ironic as people had accused him of stealing money but now the tide had turned and now it was his
money which had been stolen. The consequence of the stolen money means that Silas opens up to the
whole of the community. He starts to become good friends with Dolly Winthrop, the wheelwright s
wife. Chapter 12 sees the turning point of Silas life. The readers are also introduced to Molly Farren,
Godfrey Cass wife. Molly is addicted to opium and this leads to her dying and, perhaps by
coincidence, her baby arrives at Silas door. At first, he thinks his gold has arrived but this gift is more
important than his gold according to him. Silas instantly becomes a better person when the child
arrives at his door. He used to crave his precious guineas but now he desires this baby. The thoughts
and cravings he had for his gold have now been replaced by this treasure . He says that She ll be my

research your options before making any decisions. The advice from your colleagues in the text does
bring up some really good points. If the article in The Wall Street Journal holds to be true, now would

Assuming that the 80 acres of farmland do not come with all of the equipment needed to grow and
harvest corn crops, there will be an additional investment beyond the $80,000 for the land in terms of
both time and money. If you do not have the additional funds to not only purchase the materials and
hire the manpower to get the farm up and running, but also the funds to sustain your likelihood while
waiting for the crops to turn a profit, you would find yourself in quite the predicament. There are
alternatives to obtaining these additional resources, such as taking out business loans or finding a
business partner, but these added expenses may in turn cause additional stress in your life, defeating
the purpose of moving to Illinois seeking refuge in a more peaceful environment. I also believe it is
important to research the corn crops and corn based ethanol a little bit more before jumping into a
decision like this. According to the 2014 Illinois Crop Budgets corn crops have lower returns than
received in recent years, suggesting that incomes will be down for corn farmers in comparison to
previous years (Schnitkey, 2013). Even with the increased demand for ethanol, knowing that projected
incomes are potentially in decline is something one should not take lightly before making such a
drastic career

Changing Hierarchies in Early America Essay
Changing Hierarchies in Early America
In A Model of Christian Charity, John Winthrop proposes to change the existing social and economic
hierarchy. The old world social hierarchy divided the classes based on wealth and property. The
highest class consisted of the king and royal family, then followed by the bishops. Next on the
hierarchy were the nobles, gentlemen, and the wealthy. And at the bottom of the hierarchy of course,
were the poor. Because of this extreme division, there was no middle ground between the wealthy and
poor. That is, the old world hierarchy allowed the rich to hold power over the poor. The poor would
live and work on the land in exchange for protection from the wealthy. In other words, the poor had to

If you love someone, they will love you back. This will of course lead to a better economy and society.
When people love each other, they are able to step beyond the divisions placed on them by society. If
people are willing to step past those divisions and aid each other, then the class systems become
unimportant. This mobility will bring the rich closer to the poor while at the same time allowing the
poor to rise higher to the level of the rich. In addition, Winthrop explains that if people love each
other, that God will delight to dwell among ... His own people (158). In other words, the presence of
God will encourage them in being successful. Then the ideals of the Massachusetts Bay Colony will
spread, along with the concept of God s love. Even though Winthrop began his argument by affirming
the old world social hierarchy, by the end of his sermon he has created a community of love. Winthrop
s steps set up an ideal, harmonious Christian community, mostly free of the divisions caused by social
differences. This is remarkable because he is changing the ideals for the new world. A community of
love is the beginning of a republic. Winthrop is setting up Americans to create a democratic society by
instilling in everyone the concept of the community of love. Anne Bradstreet also wanted to create a
community of love. However, she takes Winthrop s idea of a community of love a step further. In

Thomas Nast Influence
In the latter part of the nineteenth century, as the United States became more industrialized and larger
portions of the population were granted the right to political involvement, newspapers became an
increasingly important source of information. Those who could effectively portray the events of the
time in a way accessible to the common man held the key to political influence. But there was another
facet to this business: it was, above all, important to be able to reach the uneducated masses.
Cartoonist Thomas Nast did just that, using his artistic skill to caricature inequality in weekly political

exposure to Nast s cartoons, they had no way to know that their beloved Tweed was corrupting politics

Therefore, Nast could use his illustrations to turn politics into a tangible, understandable topic for the

More and more schools are installing security cameras in halls, classrooms and buses. Administrators

eliminated with one little piece of technology hanging from the ceiling. That little piece of technology
is a surveillance camera which can be placed almost anywhere. Many schools are determining whether
or not to install security cameras in classrooms. Those who have, have seen dramatic changes in

  • 2. Acct745 Week 2 Running Head: ACTIVITY BASED COSTING Activity Based Costing Adriana Vlasin Davenport University ACCT745 Larry L. Simpson CPA, CGMA March 1, 2015 Abstract This paper provides a brief presentation of Activity Based Costing methodology, how is used as well as its short comings. Activity Based Costing Activity based costing (ABC) methodology is an instrument designed to provide accountants and managers with valuable costing information that will allow them to make sound strategic decisions. It is used as a secondary methodology rather than a replacement for the company s primarily costing system. The ABC methodology identifies activities in an organization and for each activity it assigns a cost. The cost reflects the actual resource consumption by each activity that has been identified. Under a traditional system, overhead cost is allocated to an activity based on hours or rates for direct labor or machine usage. However, this approach does not clearly indicate how much overhead cost will be needed in order to complete a job through a particular function. ABC methodology is to be used as an alternative to traditional accounting where a business s overhead costs (indirect costs such as electrical energy consumption for heating or cooling, or indirect cost associated with marketing) are allocated as a proportion of direct costs, to an activity. This approach is unsatisfactory because there can be cases where two activities could absorb the same direct costs ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 4. Mexican Social Realists and Harlem Renaissance Mexican Social Realists and Harlem Renaissance Poverty has always been an issue throughout centuries. In most areas living conditions were horrible due to wars, and corruption within cities and states. Most families lost their male sons to the draft of the war at the ages of 6 years or older. Families struggled and did what they had to, to maintain a home as well as food for their families. Because of this Social Realism was successful. Social Realism was an international movement that many artists and composers where a part of. This movement highlights inequalities of capitalism, and gave the chance to these artists and composers to express everyday living conditions of the working class and the poor through their work. Diego Rivera is one of those artists that through his work showed the struggle of the poor, he was one of the most famous muralists in the Mexican Social Realism. The Harlem Renaissance was known as the New Negro Movement where African Americans where forced out of Southern states to the urban areas due to the Great Migration. Jacob Lawrence was one of those that expressed his thought on the Great Migration describing it as the push and pull factors. Diego Rivera was known for a muralist of the Mexican Social Realism. • 5. Managing Remote Sales Teams Offer Unique Challenges Awesome sales teams aren t just found in office cubicles. A sales member might attend a CEO meeting in California, play a round of golf with an important client in Georgia, or cold call prospective leads from an apartment in Barcelona. Technology makes remote work more accessible. The office now encompasses different countries and time zones. A Stanford University research study found that employees are 13 percent more productive when working remotely. However, managing a remote sales team isn t easy. People work at their own pace, creating disconnection among team members. When problems occur, it s not as simple as getting up from your desk and walking down the hall to get clarification face to face. Managing remote sales teams offer unique challenges, but you can overcome them. Let s explore four ways to lead your remote team to more closed deals. 1. Set Clear Expectations When setting expectations, sales employees are encouraged to meet higher performance levels. A recent Gallup poll of German workers found that when a manager sets clear priorities for their employees about 38 percent of workers feel engaged and will strive to increase their work performance. Establish clear expectations for your team. It provides everyone a set standard to maintain. The benchmark should include sales objectives, specific online procedures when working on leads, and tips for managing time more efficiently. Sales managers must be willing to hop on a Skype call with their team. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Reflection On Clinical Evaluation This semester, through the use of clinical evaluation, I have learned how to be a better clinician. To clarify, I have learned how to evaluate the interventions, measurement choices, implementation of interventions and data collection process I practice with my clients to better understand how my clients are responding to therapeutic treatment. The first experience with regards to clinical evaluation I had began when I was required to complete the first immersion program report. In order to better understand my positionality with clinical evaluation it is important to know that this school year, I am interning with Henry Ittleson Center as a day treatment therapist. Henry Ittleson Center is a day and residential child treatment center located in the Riverdale area of the Bronx. The agency services children between the ages of 5 to 13 who are diagnosed with severe emotional and behavioral disorders and require special education services. As a result of clinical evaluation being such a long process, for the sake of this paper, I will be focusing on apprehension moments I encountered when completing my immersion report such as frustrations I faced with my agencies limited objectives/goals selection, frustrations with diagnosing children, difficulties with measurement selection, biased results and quick glance at the progress made by my client since I began to evaluate my own practices. My experiences with clinical evaluation formally began when asked to complete section one of the immersion report, which includes brief synopsis of client, target problem, goals and objectives. Initially, I found it quite easy to list out the target problem, goals and objectives because in essence, I was taking this information straight from the data base system we use in the agency to file our reports. However, as I started to reflect on this process with my immersion partner, I realized that I was not required or expected by my agency to ask my client or my client s family what they wanted me to identify as my client s goals and objectives for the year. As I went back into the system, I recognized that all the objectives and goals available on the AVATAR (system we use to keep our records) are dependent on the client s ... • 7. A Doll s House Gender Essay Throughout much of English literature, gender and sex have been carefully analyzed. Often, a literary character can be identified as either male or female simply based on the character s behavior or on the way they are described by the author. Gender is not the biological traits that society uses to assign a person into either female or male; this is called sex. Gender is the repeated socialization over time that leads men and women to fall into a false sense that they are acting naturally, rather than following a socially constructed role. In A Doll House , Henrik Ibsen appoints specific stereotypical gender roles to each of his characters to show how gender has been constructed by social expectations. One of the most obvious issues that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Male roles in A Doll House are presented through two characters: Torvald Helmer and Nils Krogstad. In the first place, Torvald Helmer is a mirror image of the stereotypical male gender. To him, social expectations surrounding his gender must be met. He holds on to the belief that a man s role in marriage is to protect and guide his wife. Also, Torvald believes that all husbands have a right to their wives bodies. He asks Aren t I your husband ? (Isben 832) after Nora resists having sex with him. This demonstrates how male figures of the 19th century thought they had all the power, especially when behind closed doors. As Parker (2003) describes, in common Victorian society, the husband did not view their wives as equals but rather an amusement or possession . Torvald enjoys the idea that Nora needs instruction and is quite eager to show her how to dance the tarantella. Torvald is very overbearing and treats his wife Nora like a doll. The Helmer household acts as an enclosure to shelter the entire family from the cruelties of the outside world. Another stereotypical trait of Torvald Helmer s is that he has a steady job and is very conscious of his appearance in the community. He has the desire to stay in good rankings thus fires Krogstad from the bank as to not make [himself] ridiculous in front of the whole office ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Stratification Of Social Class And Youth And The Life... Stratification of social class in the media Social class stratification continues to have a very important role in the life of people living in the U.S. and all around the world. The different class of people in the U.S. is based on several reasons. For this essay, we are going to examine the socio economic background, level of education of the youth and the life style of an individual. A good question is how does the social class stratification originates?, why do middle class youths turn to be more successful than working class youths? Children get their first exposure of what society is all about from their parents who is the primary group. The school, teachers, and community serves as the secondary group and has an impact on the development of the child. It is during the up bringing of a child that the mores of the society should be assimilated. Failure to do so, the child becomes unproductive and feels rejected by the society and unfortunately, this child might end up with a deviant character. On average, educated people earn more than those who are not educated, and their wealth and knowledge gain is passed to their generation. To have a quality life people need to be educated. The more skills an individual acquires the better chances his/her has to be successful. The community and the life style of a child affect his/her progress, the kind of neighborhood or friend a child makes will influence the direction this child will take. • 13. E. Coli And Its Effects On The United States E.coli outbreaks have steadily grown over the last few decades. An expansion in big farming has led to E. coli not only being found in meat, but vegetation as well, due to waste runoff. This has increased our need for adequate antibiotics that can fight bacteria, like E. coli. The best way to pinpoint which antibiotics work is by measuring their ability to create antimicrobial agents or zones of inhibition. When a paper disc that has been saturated in an antibiotic is inserted in a solution of E.coli and medium, the zone of inhibition will be noted as the clear ring that forms around the disk. The antibiotics efficacy is then determined by measuring each disk zone of inhibition, and comparing these measurements to the zone measurements of an untreated specimen. If an antibiotic is to be deemed sufficient for treating E. coli it should show a zone of inhibition that is at least double the size of the untreated specimen. • 15. Analysis Of Boccaccio s The Decameron Throughout the various novelle of the Decameron there lies a rather conflicting role of women in relation to the society that Boccaccio s Decameron was set in. From novella to novella the theme of women s gender role fluctuates between misogynistic to feminist. It can be argued that Boccaccio was a feminist ahead of his time or that he shared the traditional views towards women of 14th century Italy. Overall, it is fair to say that Boccaccio does depict women as transcending men in many respects, some of them being positive, and some negative. I believe there is a deeper meaning behind Boccaccio view s towards women which I will elaborate on below. Giovanni Boccaccio was born in Florence (Certaldo) in 1313. He was raised predominately by his mother and according to New Advent Encyclopedia he was a steadfast son who greatly admired his mother and looked upon his father with some disdain.(1) From what i ve read not much is known about Boccaccio s childhood and as a result, reports mention Boccaccio s relationship with his father as being mediocre. Most sources comment that Boccaccio was very close to his mother. I believe there is an important connection of his relationship with his mother and the way he portrays women in the context of his writings. When taking this connection into consideration, the gender roles depicted in the Decameron can be better interpreted. Boccaccio s opinions on love and his subsequent writings were not only influenced by his personal ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 19. Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys Rochester and Antoinette are two characters that are both outsiders of their respective communities. Antoinette is excluded from both the white and black communities, and eventually it leads to her instability and uneasiness throughout the novel. While being excluded from the community isn t dreadful enough, she suffers being called a white cockroach (23) and becoming an aberration through her own husband s eyes, Rochester. Moreover, Rochester is ignored by his own family. His isolation stems from the letter he sends to his father, stating that I will never be a disgrace to you or my dear brother the son you love (70). His bitterness implies that his father favors his brother much more than he favors Rochester. He is also separated from the black population, as he tells Antoinette that he would never hug and kiss [a black person] (91). His haughty behavior eventually confines him from the population on the island. Ultimately, Antoinette s and Rochester s struggles pushes these characters to a new extreme in which it pushes Rochester to lock his wife in the attic and Antoinette to write [her] name in fire red (53) by the end of the novel. Majority of the writer s focus is to change people s attitude s. Jonathan Swift, Jean Baptiste Poquelin Moliere, Francois Marie Arquet de Voltaire use characterization and plot to challenge the themes of the Neo Classical period. In A Modest Proposal, Jonathan Swift challenges the Neo classical period by creating a sense of instability in their way of thinking. Also, lipid soluble molecules can move through the membrane, where as non lipid soluble molecules cannot pass through the lipid bilayer (www.biology online.org). Through the years, these institutions have developed, marketed, and optimized a method to generate revenue of high levels. Yet, no one seems to have a problem with the fact that these players are being utilized and objectified for their talents. Each athlete must give up more than they should, without reasonable benefits. In fact, The University of Alabama made nearly $143.5 million in revenue alone during the 2012 2013 year (Solomon). It will cover all aspects of security that an SME should be using against the current security threats that cyber criminals are using today. The guide will show how an SME can test their networks security for functionality, so that they know everything is working as expected. Chapter 1: Introduction This project is being undertaken to investigate and assess the mitigation techniques required to secure the networks of Small to Medium Enterprises (SME s) against the major network threats of today. Various steps need to be taken so that this project can achieve any results. The first step to be taken is to research what an SME is and what an SME network entails. Next is to research the current logical and physical network security technologies being used or those that are currently in development. The key vulnerabilities that are found within SME networks are going to be reviewed and possible mitigation techniques normally used to defend against these vulnerabilities will be discussed. In order to achieve realistic results that can be used to advice SME s an experiment will be undertaken to find out whether or not these mitigation techniques actually secure a SME type network against key vulnerabilities such as those researched. Those are the kind of decision that the judge has to take, and it is very important that judges stay independent from the rest of the government, as it is his main role in the democracy, the impartiality. • 36. Leaving New York City for the Farmlands of Illinois Essay | Case: Leaving New York City for the Farmlands of Illinois There are a lot of things to consider before making a career changes, especially one as big as uprooting yourself from the business world in a major city to moving to rural farmland, learning a new trade from the bottom up. It is crucial to research your options before making any decisions. The advice from your colleagues in the text does bring up some really good points. If the article in The Wall Street Journal holds to be true, now would be an excellent time to get into the farming business producing corn crops if there is going to be an increased demand for corn to produce corn based ethanol as a gasoline substitute. If there will be an increase in the demand for corn, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Assuming that the 80 acres of farmland do not come with all of the equipment needed to grow and harvest corn crops, there will be an additional investment beyond the $80,000 for the land in terms of both time and money. If you do not have the additional funds to not only purchase the materials and hire the manpower to get the farm up and running, but also the funds to sustain your likelihood while waiting for the crops to turn a profit, you would find yourself in quite the predicament. There are alternatives to obtaining these additional resources, such as taking out business loans or finding a business partner, but these added expenses may in turn cause additional stress in your life, defeating the purpose of moving to Illinois seeking refuge in a more peaceful environment. I also believe it is important to research the corn crops and corn based ethanol a little bit more before jumping into a decision like this. According to the 2014 Illinois Crop Budgets corn crops have lower returns than received in recent years, suggesting that incomes will be down for corn farmers in comparison to previous years (Schnitkey, 2013). Even with the increased demand for ethanol, knowing that projected incomes are potentially in decline is something one should not take lightly before making such a drastic career ... • 37. Changing Hierarchies in Early America Essay Changing Hierarchies in Early America In A Model of Christian Charity, John Winthrop proposes to change the existing social and economic hierarchy. The old world social hierarchy divided the classes based on wealth and property. The highest class consisted of the king and royal family, then followed by the bishops. Next on the hierarchy were the nobles, gentlemen, and the wealthy. And at the bottom of the hierarchy of course, were the poor. Because of this extreme division, there was no middle ground between the wealthy and poor. That is, the old world hierarchy allowed the rich to hold power over the poor. The poor would live and work on the land in exchange for protection from the wealthy. In other words, the poor had to work as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If you love someone, they will love you back. This will of course lead to a better economy and society. When people love each other, they are able to step beyond the divisions placed on them by society. If people are willing to step past those divisions and aid each other, then the class systems become unimportant. This mobility will bring the rich closer to the poor while at the same time allowing the poor to rise higher to the level of the rich. In addition, Winthrop explains that if people love each other, that God will delight to dwell among ... His own people (158). In other words, the presence of God will encourage them in being successful. Then the ideals of the Massachusetts Bay Colony will spread, along with the concept of God s love. Even though Winthrop began his argument by affirming the old world social hierarchy, by the end of his sermon he has created a community of love. Winthrop s steps set up an ideal, harmonious Christian community, mostly free of the divisions caused by social differences. This is remarkable because he is changing the ideals for the new world. A community of love is the beginning of a republic. Winthrop is setting up Americans to create a democratic society by instilling in everyone the concept of the community of love. Anne Bradstreet also wanted to create a community of love. However, she takes Winthrop s idea of a community of love a step further. In addition to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. Thomas Nast Influence In the latter part of the nineteenth century, as the United States became more industrialized and larger portions of the population were granted the right to political involvement, newspapers became an increasingly important source of information. Those who could effectively portray the events of the time in a way accessible to the common man held the key to political influence. But there was another facet to this business: it was, above all, important to be able to reach the uneducated masses. Cartoonist Thomas Nast did just that, using his artistic skill to caricature inequality in weekly political magazines over the course of his 40 year career. It is widely agreed that Nast had an influence unparalleled by nearly any other in American history; ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Indeed, in an era where news of all kinds is only a click away, it seems odd that the simple cartoon could once have been the most influential form of media in the nation. However, one must realize that the target audience of these cartoons were illiterate immigrants and the impoverished masses; before exposure to Nast s cartoons, they had no way to know that their beloved Tweed was corrupting politics at all. In addition, these comics were published at a time when the United States had the highest newspaper circulation per capita in the world; everyone had access to these cartoons (Leepson 54). Therefore, Nast could use his illustrations to turn politics into a tangible, understandable topic for the American masses; in doing this, Nast paved the way for future illustrators and journalists, such as Homer Davenport, who went on to caricaturize corruption just as his predecessor had (Wang, ...
