History of
advertising

What is the purpose of TV
       Advertising

There are many reasons for TV advertising:
•The first reason is to make a profit and to cover the costs of
shows being aired.
•Although TV has now been noticed of a success for
companies to promote their products and raise awareness.
The first countries to start
                making TV Ads
• 1941- The first television advertisement was broadcast in the United States on
July 1, 1941. The watchmaker Bulova paid $9 for a placement on New York
station WNBT before a baseball game between the Brooklyn Dodgers and
    Philadelphia Phillies.

• 1948- More than any other point, 1948 proved to be the year television
advertising truly began to take center stage.

• 1955 - The first TV ad broadcast in the UK was on ITV on 21 September 1955,
    advertising Gibbs SR toothpaste.

• 1960 - The first TV Ad broadcast in the Philippines was on ABS-CBN in 1960,
advertising Tide detergent powder. Until the early 1990s, advertising on
television had only been affordable for large companies willing to make a
significant investment, but the advent of desktop video allowed many small
and local businesses to produce television ads for airing on local cable TV
    services.

• 1960- this way of doing things became a staple in the television advertising
industry – and has remains so to this very day.
First company that made
         TV Ads
A Well known Ad
Gorilla dairy milk advert Voted favourite TV ad for 2007

Conventions
• It is an abstract ad, an the purpose of the video is to sell the Cadburys
     chocolate.
• The purple backdrop is used to represent Cadburys.
• The slogan is written like milk.
• The target audience is everyone.
• They use many different camera angles such as close ups, mid close ups, long
shots panning etc of the gorillas face.
• The sound is digetic

Success Story
•The campaign boosted sales of Dairy Milk by 9%
•Set a new standard in the viral world, becoming an internet phenomenon
•Became the most watched commercial ever on YouTube, spawning a string of
spoofs
•Broken all records for downloads

    The URL:
The 10 most expensive
              Ads
1. Guinness Domino – this advert cost $20 million
2. Most Expensive Political Ad - $14.2 million
3. Aviva Insurance - this advert cost $13.4 million
4. Chrysler Comeback- this advert cost $9 million it placed 44thin favourite TV ads
5. Pepsi-the most expensive ad was done by Pepsi during the 2002 Super Bowl.
The TV ad was well discussed, featured Britney Spears, and just might have
been worth its $7.53 million price tag.
6. Honda- This advert cost $6.5 million.
7. Ferrari - The price tag for the ad was $3.9 million
8. Go Daddy - An internet company advertising on television it cost $2.4 million
commercial during the Super Bowl to direct people to the domain hosting giant.
9. Carlton Beer - This expensive television commercial was for an Australian beer.
It actually makes fun of expensive television ads. However, the cost of the
commercial was never shared, but they were reported to sell an extra 36
million beers. If each bottle cost only a dollar, then the ad would have had to
cost $36 million to break even.
10. Most Expensive Spot – This ad cost $2.7 million.
The first ever TV Advert
The first commercial was for Gibbs SR toothpaste.
It featured a tube of toothpaste, a block of
ice and a commentary about its "tingling fresh"
qualities.
Best time to advertise
        your Ad on TV

It is important to run your advert to your target
audience at least 5 to 7 times a day. Prime television
is from 8 to 11pm. A 30 second advert aired during
this time; is more expensive than any other time.
Special events that take place in countries such as
America e.g. The Superbowl can cost up to as much
as $3million dollars which would be unrealistic for
small business. Which may mean they have to
advertise on smaller networks such as USA, Spike.
