OTTs - Threat or opportunity for African TelcosSteve Esselaar
OTTs like WhatsApp and Skype provide an opportunity for African telcos by stimulating data usage and market share, but also pose a threat by reducing voice and SMS revenues. Some telcos have embraced OTTs through zero-rating or bundling, while others argue for regulating them. Case studies of Kenya, Namibia, and South Africa show differing approaches - Safaricom has succeeded with M-Pesa, while Namibia's MTC bundles services and South Africa's dominant operators want OTT regulation. Overall, OTTs can benefit or harm telcos depending on how they are addressed through policies like blocking, embracing, or regulating them.

The Evolution and Impact of OTT Platforms: A Deep Dive into the Future of Ent...ABHILASH DUTTA
This presentation provides a thorough examination of Over-the-Top (OTT) platforms, focusing on their development and substantial influence on the entertainment industry, with a particular emphasis on the Indian market. We begin with an introduction to OTT platforms, defining them as streaming services that deliver content directly over the internet, bypassing traditional broadcast channels. These platforms offer a variety of content, including movies, TV shows, and original productions, allowing users to access content on-demand across multiple devices. The historical context covers the early days of streaming, starting with Netflix's inception in 1997 as a DVD rental service and its transition to streaming in 2007. The presentation also highlights India's television journey, from the launch of Doordarshan in 1959 to the introduction of Direct-to-Home (DTH) satellite television in 2000, which expanded viewing choices and set the stage for the rise of OTT platforms like Big Flix, Ditto TV, Sony LIV, Hotstar, and Netflix. The business models of OTT platforms are explored in detail. Subscription Video on Demand (SVOD) models, exemplified by Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, offer unlimited content access for a monthly fee. Transactional Video on Demand (TVOD) models, like iTunes and Sky Box Office, allow users to pay for individual pieces of content. Advertising-Based Video on Demand (AVOD) models, such as YouTube and Facebook Watch, provide free content supported by advertisements. Hybrid models combine elements of SVOD and AVOD, offering flexibility to cater to diverse audience preferences.
Content acquisition strategies are also discussed, highlighting the dual approach of purchasing broadcasting rights for existing films and TV shows and investing in original content production. This section underscores the importance of a robust content library in attracting and retaining subscribers. The presentation addresses the challenges faced by OTT platforms, including the unpredictability of content acquisition and audience preferences. It emphasizes the difficulty of balancing content investment with returns in a competitive market, the high costs associated with marketing, and the need for continuous innovation and adaptation to stay relevant.
The impact of OTT platforms on the Bollywood film industry is significant. The competition for viewers has led to a decrease in cinema ticket sales, affecting the revenue of Bollywood films that traditionally rely on theatrical releases. Additionally, OTT platforms now pay less for film rights due to the uncertain success of films in cinemas.
Looking ahead, the future of OTT in India appears promising. The market is expected to grow by 20% annually, reaching a value of ₹1200 billion by the end of the decade. The increasing availability of affordable smartphones and internet access will drive this growth, making OTT platforms a primary source of entertainment for many viewers.

Understanding User Needs and Satisfying ThemAggregage
https://www.productmanagementtoday.com/frs/26903918/understanding-user-needs-and-satisfying-them
We know we want to create products which our customers find to be valuable. Whether we label it as customer-centric or product-led depends on how long we've been doing product management. There are three challenges we face when doing this. The obvious challenge is figuring out what our users need; the non-obvious challenges are in creating a shared understanding of those needs and in sensing if what we're doing is meeting those needs.
In this webinar, we won't focus on the research methods for discovering user-needs. We will focus on synthesis of the needs we discover, communication and alignment tools, and how we operationalize addressing those needs.
Industry expert Scott Sehlhorst will:
• Introduce a taxonomy for user goals with real world examples
• Present the Onion Diagram, a tool for contextualizing task-level goals
• Illustrate how customer journey maps capture activity-level and task-level goals
• Demonstrate the best approach to selection and prioritization of user-goals to address
• Highlight the crucial benchmarks, observable changes, in ensuring fulfillment of customer needs

2. NEED IDENTIFICATION
Description / Problem Statement : ARPU Going down across all telecom operators in India in spite of
increasing tele density.
Types of Data for Analysis : Quarterly ARPU reports, Tele density penetration
The Indian Telecom Services Performance Indicators
Data Source : TRAI – Telecom Regulatory Authority of India
COAI – Cellular Operators Association of India
Analytical Methods / Techniques : OLAP , Graphs, Pivot Table, Power Pivots
Reporting Structure / Method : Pivot Reports, Dashboards, Google Charts ( Real time Updates)
Conclusion / Takeaways : It would help us identifying the tradeoff price between profit and
customer retention
3. CHALLENGES FACED
The data was not arranged systematically and
it had to be arranged in a Tabular form
There was no primary key and operator id was
manually created so as to uniquely identify
each operator for each circle
In some cases, the operator’s license was
revoked and therefore there was incomplete
data. Such entries were deleted.
NOTE : Worksheet 1 – 7 have been hidden so that the sheets which follow can be easily accessed
4. VARIOUS DATA ENTRIES & THEIR RELATIONSHIPS
Operator ID is the common element for all the data
entries
Table 1 : ARPU of all the Operators for Q1 2013
Table 2 : ARPU of all the Operators for Q2 2013
Table 3 : ARPU of all the Operators for Q3 2013
Table 4 : ARPU of all the Operators for Q4 2013
Table 5 : ARPU of all the Operators for Q1 2014
Table 6 : ARPU of all the Operators for Q2 2014
Table 7 : ARPU of all the Operators for Q3 2014
Table 8 : Service area and circle distribution for all
operators
5. Circle Distribution
as per Number of
Operators
Deduction :
• Assam & Uttar Pradesh are densely
populated in terms of operator
presence
• Rajasthan & MP have limited
operator presence however since
Rajasthan is mostly desert, it
requires less coverage.
• On the contrary, there is a huge
demand in MP and therefore a
huge market to tap upon
6. Operator Presence
Nationwide
Deduction :
• Dishnet is only present in Eastern
India
• Whereas Aircel is present PAN
India except for the eastern part
• This can be due to limited license
granted to them by TRAI
• An Ideal solution would be to have
a merger or MVNO established so
that the overall ARPU can be
increased
7. Deduction :
• There has been a rise in the overall ARPU for the
year 2013
• Bharti Airtel and Idea Cellular saw a huge decline
in their ARPU for Q3
• Vodafone has not been able to make a noticeable
increase in their ARPU in Q3 and Q4
Deduction :
• There has been a rise in the overall ARPU for the
year 2014
• Other than Aircel, all the operators suffered
heavy losses in Q3 2014
• There was a sudden rise in the ARPU for Idea
Cellular for Q2 however it went low in Q3
8. Deduction :
• The highest ARPU till date has been for
Quarter 3, 2014
• There was a drop in the quarterly ARPU in
Quarter 1, 2014 after Quarter 4, 2013
Deduction :
• Gujrat has been giving the largest ARPU
• This is followed by Uttar Pradesh
• Since the Geographical area of Gujrat is less than that of Uttar
Pradesh, we can conclude that we have premium segment high
value customers in Gujrat for most of the operators and
therefore they should be targeted.
10. CONCLUSION
• Identification of Geographical Areas : Areas like Gujrat should be tapped more as they have more
numbers of high segment customers. This would mean emphasis on VAS should be there in such areas
• Introduction of New Schemes / Offers : It is essential to offer new schemes / offers for customers
especially for operators such as Bharti Airtel to maintain their market dominance
• Need for Merger : In order to get maximum service area coverage, operators such as Aircel & Dishnet
should merge or have MVNO so that their ARPU can increase
If such issues can be tackled then the overall ARPU can increase and that would be in accordance with
the increasing Teledensity
