Operating machinery in hazardous environments from a remote control will be enabled through near-zero latency communication links that enable real-time video. Billions of video-enabled devices will be able to share bandwidth-hungry content. These are just a few applications that illustrate what 5G will be designed for.
To meet the new connectivity requirements of the emerging IoT segment, 3GPP has taken evolutionary steps on both the network side and the device side. A single technology or solution cannot be ideal to all the different potential IoT applications, market situations and spectrum availability. As a result, the 3GPP standardizing several technologies, including Extended Coverage GSM (EC-GSM), LTE-M and NB-IoT.
LTE-M, NB-IoT and EC-GSM are all superior solutions to meet IoT requirements as a family of solutions, and can complement each other based on technology availability, use case requirements and deployment scenarios. The evolution for these technologies is shown in figure #5. Technical studies and normative work for the support of Machine Type Communication (MTC) as part of 3GPP LTE specifications for RAN began in 3GPP Release 12 and are continuing with the goals of developing features optimized for devices with MTC traffic.

Internet of Things is predicted to become a huge industry with billions connected devices and enormous volume of data generated. Even Big Data will not be big enough if it is not for IoT. Telecommunication industry is destined to play some role here and this role will certainly be opening the gates to the Internet for a massive number of sensors, objects and devices. However, it is expected that connection part of the IoT value chain would vary from 0 to mere 10 percent leaving the largest portion of created value to other industry players. CSPs are definitely in the show but are the last and the least in the guest list.
Not all opportunities gone, of course, and some telecommunication majors transform the business and sophisticate the product lineups to capture more value going forward. There is still time for many CSPs to figure out how to take themselves from M2M mindset into the IoT paradigm through reimagining the business and building the ecosystem before the boat is missed altogether. Where trends are heading to, what products are first to be delivered and where in the value split CSPs can have more impact? I have shared my vision on this matter and would be grateful for receiving any of your thoughts too.

These technologies – called low-power, wide-area (LPWA) solutions – have three main advantages over the traditional networks:
lower cost: the target is produce modems for less than USD5
battery powered: the aim is to get 10 years of service from one AA battery
strong propagation: LPWA will have greater propagation than traditional cellular.
These characteristics open up markets for which traditional cellular technology is unsuitable – for example, where high module costs made the business case unviable or for devices that do not have a permanent power source, such as water meters.
We believe that LPWA services can target a market of more than 3 billion M2M connections worldwide by 2023, and generate over USD10 billion from connectivity revenue alone.

It's been about 18 months since my original attempt at charting the Internet of Things (IoT) space. To say the least, it's been a period of extraordinary activity in the ecosystem.
While the Internet of Things will inevitably ride the ups and downs of inflated hype and unmet expectations, at this stage there's no putting the genie back in the bottle. The Internet of Things is propelled by an exceptional convergence of trends (mobile phone ubiquity, open hardware, Big Data, the resurrection of AI, cloud computing, 3D printing, crowdfunding). In addition, there's an element of self-fulfilling prophecy at play with enterprises, consumers, retailers and the press all equally excited about the possibilities. As a result, the IoT space is now reaching escape velocity. Whether we're ready for it or not, we're rapidly evolving towards a world where just about everything will be connected. This has profound implications for society and how we collectively interact with the world around us. Key concerns around privacy and security will need to be addressed.

The role of ICTs for environmental observation. Collecting and helping to interpret and model the environment and more specifically the climate are key to climate action. Wireless sensor networks, the IoT, embedded microprocessors, remote sensing and earth observation systems, etc. are described. Today, they continue to be very important and their role and use os growing.
Slide presentations developed to demonstrate how Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) be used to address climate change, and why ICTs are a crucial part of the solution – i.e. in promoting efficiency, Green Growth & sustainable development, in dealing with climate change and for climate and environmental action. These slide presentations were delivered in February 2011 in Seongnam, near Seoul in Korea.
These presentations were developed and delivered over 2.5 days on the occasion of a Regional Training of Trainers Workshop for upcoming Academy modules on ICT for Disaster Risk Management and Climate Change Abatement. These modules were developed as part of the Academy of ICT Essentials for Government leaders developed by the United Nations (UN) Asia Pacific Centre for ICT Training (APCICT), based in Songdo City, in the Republic of South Korea.
These presentations were developed in 2011, and are somewhat out of date, but most of the principles still apply. Module 10, which has been published, does not include much of the information outlined in these presentations, which are fairly technical. They were developed to address a significant gap in understanding of the technical basis of using ICTs for climate action and because there is a clear bias in development circles against the importance of dealing with climate change mitigation in developing countries. These presentations are an attempt to redress this lack and are published here with this purpose in mind.
The author, Richard Labelle, is presently working on updating these presentations to further highlight the importance of addressing climate change and the important role that technology including ICTs, play in this effort.

Change in Business model is required:
IoT allows vendors to divorce the business model of the device from that of the data
that are generated by that device.
For example: Shift from an environment in which they charge based on volume of
traffic(monthly access fees + data plans) and connections to one in which they charge
based on level of performance.
Devices are low cost, so can not have security rules
Security
Service providers can ensure that devices and IoT sensors are securely connected to network controllers, data sent and received via gateway will go through rigorous encryption and the controller will enforce processes to block Denial of Service (DOS) attacks. Policy control will be strictly enforced along with deep packet inspection to enable the right service with right security. Connected devices will use 3G, 4G or 5G wireless technology. However 5G will make IoT dream come true.

In a survey conducted by IDC (2013 cited in PwC Communication Review December 2014,p.1 ), the respondents indicated that while on their mobiles they spend a mere 16% of their time on phone calls and the other 84% on activities like browsing the web, communicating by email, using social apps, watching videos or TV, gaming, etc.
Network function virtualization can be used in vertical industry applications. NFV infrastructure can be scaled up and down to provide virtual network function resources for vertical markets.
