exam 2 for exercise physiology
PET 3351 Exercise Physiology Second Exam Review (Fall 2012)
Chapter IV: The Physiological Basis of Muscular Strength and Flexibility
1. Strength is operationally defined as the maximal force that can be exerted in a single effort.
Using this definition, strength should be assessed using one repetition maximum (1 RM), though
we often estimate strength using tests that may involve multiple repetitions.
2. In strength training and rehabilitation, emphasis should be given to both the concentric and
eccentric phases of the movement. During the concentric phase, the muscle shortens from a
lengthened position and during the eccentric phase the muscle lengthens from a shortened position.
For example, in the execution of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example many people will show an improvement in strength from the first session to the second
session. This improvement is due to CNS adaptation because there is no hypertrophic gain during
this short period. Another example which proves the importance of CNS adaptations related to
strength gains is that strength performance may increase by 30% while hypertrophic gains may
only be 15%, thus half of the strength gains is attributable to CNS adaptations. Generally in the first
few months of strength training CNS adaptations account for a larger percentage of the strength
gain than hypertrophic adaptations. To illustrate the importance of CNS adaptations in the early
part of training, it should be noted that electrical stimulation can increase the rate of strength gains.
Hypertrophy is an important factor in improved strength performance. Strength training brings
about an increase in the size and number of myofibrils. It is speculated that during and following a
high intensity strength training session the neuroendocrine responses will bring about an increased
amino acid uptake and will increase the rate of protein synthesis. Optimal hypertrophic gains
require adequate recovery between workouts to permit the rate of protein synthesis to exceed the
rate of protein degradation. It should also be noted that strength training also stimulates bone and

Deadly Debris Humans tend to think of space as infinite, that is true as far as we can tell,
however the space around Earth is not infinite. After the Space race began in the late 1950 s
countries began sending satellites into space for various purposes. Today these Satellites are
very important to everyday life, but there is a looming problem that has often been overlooked.
Low Earth orbit, where most satellites and spacecraft are located is filled with the remains of
many old and decaying satellites. Space debris is very dangerous for any human or structure in
space and could eventually make low Earth orbit too hazardous to ever use again. The Sci Fi
paper I am currently working on is a story about a group of astronauts in the near future who are
returning from mining an asteroid. In this story it is much like the moon landings in that people
were very intrigued at first but have lost interest now. These are just routine missions that hardly
anyone knows or cares about. This all changes however when two satellites in high orbit on Earth
collide, one being a communication satellite with the astronauts. The unaware astronauts, now
returning to Earth, have no idea what is hurtling toward them at 15,000 miles an hour. NASA is
unable to reestablish communication quickly enough and the craft is hit. Now adrift in space the
astronauts struggle to survive in the most hostile environment for humans. There are over five

Ethcentrism In Rabbit-Proof Fence
The film Rabbit Proof Fence illustrates on the topics of ethnocentrism, and also, the significance of
perceiving the immense breadth of the Jigalong clan s customary biological learning to depict the
wrongs that jumped out at this gathering starting in the 1930 s. As the half rank youngsters were
taken from their homes with a specific end goal to be educated like English kids, the men
responsible for said operation were endeavoring to strip away the nobility, as well as the
conventions and character of a culture that was viewed as unthinkable on the grounds that the kids
were not the same as supposed humanized society. A case of the ethnocentrismin the filmwould be
when Mr. Neville, Chief Protector of Aborigines states, Ensured against themselves. On the off
chance that they would just comprehend what we are endeavoring to improve the situation them.
Thinking that these children require sparing on the grounds that the children live as per an
arrangement of conventions and ways that originate from their own history is identified with what
is known as the White Man s Burden, since this is viewed as an adequate purpose behind
interceding in the lives of others, when this is extremely not satisfactory.
Another way that the motion picture can pass on the distinctions in culture is through the Jigalong
s learning of nature and surroundings all through the film. At a young age, the kids are instructed
how to rummage and chase for their own particular sustenance, which appears differently in relation
to the supper courses of action in the Moore River Native Settlement. Additionally, both the tracker,
who is chasing down Molly and her family can utilize the land for something other than
nourishment however a guide. Understanding those sorts of pieces of information gives the group
of onlookers an approach to see that the Jigalong clan s energy about nature in their social esteems
instead of seeing the emotional contrast and uncalled for nature of living in the Settlement.
As we started the semester understanding the genuine significance of culture, we create upon the
ideas of Ethnocentrism and Cultural Relativism where the video Rabbit Proof Fence becomes

The Legend Of King Arthur

early 800 s. Through the ages more caught on to these Arthurian Legends, and they began to
embrace them as part of their culture. Some believe that he is only a legend, yet others believe that
there is even an Arthur living among us today. While growing up, Arthur was oblivious to his
heritage. From becoming a King at the age of 16, Arthur showed courage and strength in the
darkest of times. This is why King Arthur, a mythological legend, was a brave warrior and man at
heart whose betrayal and death influenced today s society through literature, art, and even on screen
productions.
There are many legends of King Arthur s life, yet there is little knowledge of his childhood.
Although Arthur was a king, he did not have the same upbringing as most noblemen and women.
His father,
A warrior King named Uther Pendragon the ruler of Britain. With magical help from his advisor,
Merlin the Enchanter, King Uther tricked his rival s wife Igraine and conceived Arthur at Tintagel
Castle. As part of the bargain with Uther, Merlin then took the infant Arthur away from Tintagel, to
the house of Sir Ector, where he was brought up as a foster son, ignorant of his heritage. ( Legend
of King Arthur )
When he was about 16, a sword appeared in a stone. Hearing the news, Arthur went along with his

Koster Site Analysis
The Koster site located in Eldred, Illinois is an exceptionally unique site because of its multiple
inhabitants over nine thousand years during the archaic period. Each layer of the Koster site
reveals a story of the people living there, and gives a visual into what people living there did,
what they ate, and how they lived day to day life as ancient Native Americans (Indiana University
of Penn 2015). The Koster site is just one of the many archaeological sites in North America, which
seems to be consistent with other ancient peoples living during this archaic time period.
The Koster site is located in the Illinois River Valley, in Green County Illinois. The closest town

Voyeurism In Alfred Hitchcock s Rear Window
Alfred Hitchcock s Rear Window (1954), is a psychological thriller that addresses themes of
voyeurism as well as morality and ethics. The film is centered around L.B. Jeffries, an action
photographer who is wheelchair bound following an accident that has left him with a broken leg.
Stuck within the confides of his apartment, he finds pleasure observing the lives of his neighbors
through his rear window. Things change for Jeffries when he believes that he has witnessed the
murder of one of his neighbours. This essay analyzes the concluding fifteen minutes of the film, in
which many of the films overarching questions are answered. Alfred Hitchcockuses the characters in
Rear Window to control the emotions of the audience, he does this by projecting the emotions of
characters onto the viewers. This raises questions of the morality and consequences of voyeurism,
as well as questions of human curiosity.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

This is because as discussed in the National Association for the Education of Young Children
(2016), young children also want to use technology that older individuals use (National
Association for the Education of Young Children, 2016). By providing Multi Media as a subject
it means younger children can seek and develop their own skills and creativity through the basic
use of technology e.g. using basic computer programs/ learning how to take a photo on a camera.
Furthermore while there is a current GCSE called Media Studies (AQA, 2016), it can only be
studied within year 9 onwards meaning pupils might not have learnt any skills within the previous
years regarding media which could be a disadvantage for some. The GCSE is also time constricted
as it has to be taught within just two years.
Similar to that of the current I.C.T subject within the national curriculum, Multi Media studies will
allow for creativity (Department for Education, 2013), the amount of areas of study mean that
pupils can thrive and creative within the subject. The National Advisory Committee on Creative and
Cultural Education (1998:3) report states that there is stronger emphasis on creative and cultural
education . The Multi Media Studies subject would allow for creativity to be shown through
numerous ways such as through graphic design, game design, filming, editing as well as
broadcasting and photography.

The And The French Revolution
Casper David Friedrich was a German Romantic artist in the nineteenth century that is most known
for his landscape paintings that display the romantic ideals of individualism, nature, physical and
emotional passion and an interest in the mysteries of the world. Where did these ideals of
Romanticism begin? Taking a look back into the 17th century, there was another intellectual
movement that changed society, culture and politics. The Enlightenment was a time period lasting
throughout the 18th century which brought about the Age of Reason in which politics, philosophy,
and science dominated in Europe. The philosophies of the Enlightenment placed emphasis on
rational and scientific thought and viewed the natural world as one that is governed mathematically
and by scientific laws which could be understood by humankind. The Enlightened philosophies
brought about this drastic change in all aspects of society which influenced the several revolutions
of that time period such as the American and the French revolutions. After the French Revolution,
the concepts of the Old Regime and traditions of the past in Europe were abolished while new
concepts introduced by the Enlightenment were being implemented in all areas of politics, culture
and society. This left Europe in a state of two opposing worlds one that still appreciated the
traditions of the past and one that was ready for new ideas of the future. Out of this chaos is where
the ideology of Romanticismdeveloped and thrived in

Freedom In Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn s Freedom To Breathe
Freedom to Breathe Response Freedom is a right that is often taken for granted by those who are
fortunate to call themselves free. Although it is underappreciated by many, those who have had it
taken away are those who truly understand, and are grateful for, the fortunes of freedom. Freedom
to Breathe, written by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, accentuates the importance of truly valuing liberty
based upon his own personal experiences. Diction and figurative language accompany the use of
symbolism to produce a gracious and peaceful tone that is utilized to demonstrate the importance of
appreciating freedom through the eyes of a prisoner. Repetition of phrasesand words creates an
emphasis on the importance of appreciating small possessions. For instance, throughout the first
two paragraphs the phraseI breathe is constantly repeated to create a tone of content. Solzhenitsyn
uses the repetition of the phrase I breathe to show the reader how noticing even the smallest of
freedoms will give a person an optimistic view towards a bad situation. For instance, Solzhenitsyn
states This, I believe, is the single most precious freedom that prison takes away from us: the
freedom to breathe freely, as I now can (3) Upon his experiences, Solzhenitsyn finds that the greatest
deprivation within imprisonment is the absence to breathe freely among nature. By saying
Solzhenitsyn is able to breathe freely, this signifies that he held onto the hope, and gained an
optimistic view that not

Amaranth Case
Amaranth Advisors: Burning Six Billion In Thirty Days Introduction: In September, 2006, a large
sized hedge fund named Amaranth Advisors LLC lost $4.942 billion in natural gas futures trading
and was forced to close their hedge fund. Although Amaranth Advisors was not exclusively an
energy trading fund, the energy portion of their portfolio had slowly grown to represent 80% of the
performance attribution of the fund. Their collapse was not entirely unforeseeable or unavoidable.
Amaranth had amassed very large positions on both the New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX)
and the Intercontinental Exchange (ICE) in natural gas futures, swaps, and options. The trades

Amaranth s success in 2005 and early 2006: It was due to its energy (primarily natural gas)
trades. Amaranth s main energy trader was Brian Hunter, a 32 year old Canadian and the former
head of Deutsche Bank s natural gas trading desk. In September 2005, Amaranth made more than
$1 billion when Hurricanes Katrina and Rita hit the U.S Gulf Coast. These Hurricanes disrupted
the supply of natural gas, and gas prices soared to record highs, just as Hunter had predicted. The
rise in natural gas prices drove Amaranth s 15% return for 2005, as the rest of the portfolio
performed poorly. Why Natural Gas market was unique relative to other commodities: It is
because of gaseous form of natural gas made transportation difficult. Although natural gas could
be liquefied and exported overseas, this process was both expensive and potentially hazardous.
Strategy used by the natural gas traders: One common strategy is to bet on the price of futures for
the winter contract months. Many factors can influence the price of winter contracts, for e.g., a
strong hurricane season that disrupts supplies just before winter. Traders who believe either a cold
winter or a strong hurricane season will occur will take a long position in winter future contracts.
The Collapse: In September 2006, things took a turn for the worse for Amaranth. Hunter s natural
gas bets began to backfire, and the fund quickly started to lose money. By September 20,it was

How Did Emily Dickinson Influence Her Work
Emily Dickinson is currently considered one of the most famous American authors, despite the
fact that her work was not well known in her own day. Emily was notable to American Literature,
and she sealed the road for several of today s poets. She was a creative poet, determined writer, and
an extreme introvert who never gave up. Emily Dickinsonwas born on December 10, 1830 and
passed away at age 55 on May 15, 1886. ( Emily Famous). Having grown up in poverty, it
influenced her poems greatly. Emily Dickinson s father, Edward Dickinson, was a lawyer, a
member of Congress, and the treasurer of Amherst College ( Emily Encyclopedia). Dickinson s

Thing with Feathers is also a very positive poem, and many people feel as if it speaks right to the
heart (O Connor). There is a lot of reviews saying that it just has a pleasant type of message (O

because they feel as if they can relate to it (O Connor). This poem was published in 1891 in the
2nd collection of Dickinson s work, Poems by Emily Dickinson, second series ( Hope
Encyclopedia). My opinion of Hope is the Thing with Feathers would have to be that she was
very clear with her message. Not only do I feel that I can relate to it, I feel as if many other
people can relate to it. That poems main point is about hope and how you should believe in it
whenever things are not looking up for you, and I think that is very true. Many times people get
discouraged and think that there is nothing left but there is, and it is hope. I highly agree with
Dickinson in her poem Hope is the Thing with Feathers . Other people who have written reviews
on the poem say that it gives them chills, and that they adored this poem

Abortion Ethical Issue
Abortions have been an issue in this country for many years. Some people agree That abortion
should be illegal while others disagree and say that abortions should be legal. The three branches of
government have been called upon to address the issue.
There are many issues that pertain to abortion that must be resolved by the legislative branch of
the federal government. The members of Congress are obligated to support the will of the people
they represent and if those people are supportive of the practice of abortion as an after the act form
of birth control then so will the members of Congress be. The greatest issue may be the relationship
between law and morality and science and politics. One politician stated campaigning for abortion

Congress has made not a single law making abortion a legal practice in the country. President
Obama issues executive orders, that state that federal funds cannot be used to supplement
abortions or clinics that perform abortions. The President nominates Supreme Court justices that
rule on abortion cases and therefore the President potentially has more power to influence
abortion decisions. These chosen justices sit on the nation s highest court and actually decide
whether babies will live or die. President Obama stated Those of us who support a woman s
rights to decide to have an abortion and make intimate decisions about sex, sexuality, and
reproduction must also think and act strategically . A pro life Congress can propose all forms of
bills to defend women and babies, but unless both the house and senate have super pro life
plurality (290 seats in the House; 67 in the Senate), a pro abortion President can kill any legislation
with his veto pen. In 2013, President Barack Obama was the first sitting president to press the issue
about abortion. Obama stated planned parenthood is not going anywhere . President Obama talked
about Planned Parenthood to thousands of supporters.
In conclusion, we see that the discussion of abortion rights has been ongoing for decades with the
consensus of the three branches of government being that a woman should have a right to choose
whether to have a baby or not. Even though individual states have passed legislation either for or
against abortions, the final word has rested with the judicial and executive branches. The Supreme
Court ruled in Roe v. Wadethat a woman should have the right to choose. The executive branch
concurs with this ruling as long as federal monies are not

Evolution And Adaptive Value Of Brood Parasitism Within...
The Evolution and Adaptive Value of Brood Parasitism within Cuckoo Birds.
Abstract
Brood parasitism is a unique behavior performed by some species that tricks another host species
into raising its young. This is a fairly common behavior among the Cuculidae family of which 53
of the 136 species perform brood parasitism. My question and what I hope to review within this
paper is, what has caused brood parasitism, what has shaped it, and what are the adaptive values of
Cuckoo brood parasitism? Within Cuckoo s, this strange behavior has ultimately been shaped
through environmental pressures and has become advantageous. Ecological changes forced
Cuckoo s to change migrational patterns, habitat, range size, and foraging, which lead to brood
parasitism. Once brood parasitism arose, a coevolutionary arms race began between the Cuckoo
s and hosts. Due to parasitic egg rejections, Cuckoo eggs that closely resembled host eggs were
selected for, leading to higher success rates of the behavior. This gives Cuckoo s many
advantageous , as there is no longer a need for investing time and energy into raising their young.
Brood parasitism also gives Cuckoo s the advantage of exploiting diverse breeding habitats;
reduced diet restraints, and foraging. Ultimately this behavior provides many benefits to Cuckoos
and allows them successfully raise young while providing no parental care.

What Castles Were Built During The Middle Ages
Castles were built during the Middle Ages for the purpose of protection from foreign invaders.
In Britain, many castles were built along the borders in order to stop raids from the Welsh and
the Scots. By building castles along the borders, the British could also launch a series of raids in
return. A castle also demonstrated a lord s power over a particular land. If invaders had taken
over a castle, they could use it to help control the land that they had taken. A castle was a home
for a lord and his family. It was a defensible place where a lord could defend himself against his
enemies like his rival lords. A castle was a safe place where a lord and his knights could return to.
The Normans successfully conquered Britain in 1066. The leader... Show more content on

This caused the need for castle designs to be changed. The first castles were mounds of earths
which were built for defence as enemies had difficulties climbing over them. The Normans then
developed the Motte and Bailey castle designs. A Motte was a large mound of earth, and a
Bailey was the flattened land beside the mound. [4] Motte and Bailey castles took a small
amount of time to build and it was very hard to attack. Castle architects developed a way to
further strengthen the Motte and Bailey Castle which was building a shell keep a thin ring of
stone around the buildings on top of the castle Motte. [4] Castle architects then constructed a
castle made from stone. Stone was much harder to be stormed by attackers and it was protected
against fire. A new style of constructing castles developed which was the gothic style. Gothic
castles were much more imposing and comfortable to live in. In 1270, concentric castles were
then developed. They had thicker outer walls and rings of extra outer walls. [4] Concentric castles
were very expensive stone castles. In Northern Wales, Edward I built some concentric castles. After
the development of cannons, castle walls were easily destroyable. The nobles then decided to turn
the castles into imposing grand

Teenage Pregnancy and the Media Essay
There is a great debate on whether or not mass media has an influence on teenage pregnancy. A
study done by the RAND Corporation shows that teens are twice as likely to have sex or engage
in sexual acts if they see similar sexual behavior in the media. Many objects in the media that
involve sex target teens. Reality TV shows and teen dramas often portray the cool kids as the ones
who are having sex (Chandra).Today s teens are highly influenced by what they see in the media

Many researchers have found that this behavior is due to the media glorification that promotes
teenage pregnancy (Vianna 2).
By eliminating the glamorous lifestyles of teenage parents, we will help teens face the reality that
being a parent is ultimately difficult. The teen parents should help send out the message that it is
hard to live life as a teenage parent and that television shows don t fully depict the hardships that
come along with raising children. Instead of having shows that glamorize pregnancy, we should
have shows that educate teens on the real facts of being pregnant. Too many shows out there
demonstrate how teen moms have help from their parents, baby s father, and their friends. By
showing teens that such outcomes are rare, and the truth is most of them don t have the cash flow
that celebrities have, they ll end up struggling and facing the fact that raising children is
complicated. Many of the teen moms have parents and nannies to help care for their children and
this wouldn t be the case for most teens. Cases such as Jamie Lynn Spears show how a teenager
can be put into the spotlight while making pregnancy seem fun and cool. Teens want to replicate
celebrities if they see that they are living a fun lifestyle. Sarah Palin s daughter, Bristol Palin, was
on the cover of many magazines during her pregnancy. After the pregnancy, she participated in the
show, Dancing with the Stars. This leads teens to believe that being a mom might

Summary Of Siddhartha By Herman Hess Essay
Austin Burchett Dr. Bain Selbo Dr. Samuels RELS 200: World religious literature November 10,
2016 Siddhartha is a novel written by Herman Hess, that tells the story based off one of the past
lives of the Buddha. In the story, Siddhartha Gautama is on a quest to pursue spiritual
enlightenment by seeking guidance from external sources such as Buddhists, Brahmins, Samanas,
and even in the material world. Throughout his spiritual pilgrimage, Siddhartha eventually discovers
that he cannot learn how to achieve spiritual enlightenment by only relying on exterior sources of
spiritual guidance. Siddhartha finally fulfills his Nirvana when he has an internal connection to the
river that allowed him to see the complexity of existence. In my opinion, exterior paths for
Siddhartha, is not essential to achieving Nirvana but I believe that without exterior guidance,
finding internal guidance would be merely impossible. During Siddhartha s youth, he would always

knowledge he possibly could. After gaining all the wisdom of the Brahmin, Siddhartha tells his
father that he believes he and the other scholarly Brahmin have learned nearly everything from the
holy books, but he is concerned that they have not yet achieved enlightenment. Siddhartha feels that
the rituals he has been taught by the Brahmin, seem more like a custom than an actual path to
enlightenment. One evening Siddhartha reveals to his

The Employment at Will Doctrine
Doctrine liability employer based actions responses employee s behavior actions Introduction
The employment at will doctrine has always been a difficult matter to comprehend and America
is the only country that practices it. Other countries such as Japan, Great Britain, Italy, Canada,
Sweden and France all have mandatory provisions that make it a requirement that employers
must have a good reason for any termination of an employee. In the United States from the
beginning of 1980s, the doctrine came under immense challenge as the employees felt
dissatisfied with the doctrine. This is because they felt that they were more often discharged
unfairly despite years of hard work in a company. This led to three exceptions being made to the
doctrine that saw the number of employment fall between 2% to 5% that year. These exceptions
are; 1. Where there is a breach of contract by an employer, 2. Where there is a breach of a
covenant of Good faith and fair dealing, 3. Where the employer violates a public policy, which
is part of a government policy (Sentell Robbins 2008). Body Describe what steps you would take

The Works of Phillis Wheatley Essay examples
The Works of Phillis Wheatley
Biography:
Phillis Wheatley was born in West Africa around 1753. Sometime after her birth, she was brought
to America and purchased by John Wheatley in 1761. He turned Phillis over to his wife, Susanna,
to work as a personal maid. After realizing Phillis intellect, the Wheatley family encouraged Phillis
to study the Bible and read English and Latin literature, history and geography.
Wheatley s first poem was published in a Rhode Island newspaper in 1767. Poems on Various
Subjects consisted of thirty eight poems written by Wheatley, and it could be found in London in
1773. Wheatley died on December 5, 1784.*

There are many ways in which this poem could be read. A white could have read it as either a
submissive praise of Christianity or a belief that a slave believed in equality. An African American
could have read it with similar perspectives. The whites would have found the submissive reading
to be more favorable, and the African Americans would have favored the reading of equality.
However, it was doubtful that many, if any blacks, were permitted to read any of Wheatley s work.
Wheatley tended to write many religiously based poems. They all consisted of her true opinions.
They ranged from speaking about dead reverends that she respected to her opinions about the lives
of Atheist and Deist.
Atheism called out the downfalls that Wheatley believed to be corrupting the lives of those that
did not believe in God. She accused Atheists of being self centered and selfish, and she wrote,
[t]hy heart in unbelief will harder grow...Thy unbelief disturbs the peaceful mind (Wheatley 130).
Since Wheatley had found her freedom in her Christianity, she felt as though Christianity was the
sole road to happiness during and after life. Wheatley knew what she believed in, and she was not
afraid to let the world know. The Deists were not safe from Wheatley s criticism either. She
accused the Deists of being the children of Satan (Wheatley 131). Some people might have found

Illusions and Realities in Ibsen s Plays The Wild Duck and Ghosts
In Ibsen s The Wild Duck, illusions and reality are set into a conflict within the story of a son s
personal desire to confront idealism. Throughout much of the play, the son, Greger, argues the
value of truth with the reluctant Dr. Relling. Relling insists on the importance of illusions, but fails
to discourage Greger s intentions and a play that begins as a comedy quickly turns into a tragedy
because of these conflicts. At the heart of the illusions in this play are the ways that people assume
many roles in a family, impersonating multiple ideals as ways for managing their relationships. This
theme of impersonation is also developed in Ibsen s Ghosts, where ... Show more content on

Within the ordinary lives of the families in Ghosts and The WildDuck are tales of infidelity,
corruption, greed, lust, disease, and other afflictions that characterize family secrets. For
example, in Ghosts, the mother, Mrs. Alving, reveals the ways she has protected her son Oswald
from the truths of her unhappy marriage. She tells her friend and priest, Manders, ...Yes, I was
always swayed by duty and consideration for others; that was why I lied to my son, year in and
year out. Oh, what a coward I have been (315).
Manders responds, You have built up a happy illusion in your son s mind, Mrs. Alving and that is a
thing you certainly ought not to undervalue, (315) echoing Dr. Relling s belief that illusions are
sometimes more than a question of reality. In both plays, the deeper questions are about whose
reality matters, and who may determine another person s reality.
Relling accuses Greger of having a plague of ...integrity fever; and then what s worse you are
always in a delirium of hero worship; you must always have something to adore, outside yourself,
which Greger agrees to, without considering the consequences of this claim (297). In fact, Greger
s certainty about the dangers of illusions provokes the young Hedvig into an emotional despair,
and she kills herself. The issues presented in this play are not about what is true, or false, but about
the ways people build their lives on the past. Hedvig s father, Hialmar,

zoning restrictions, may force Ritz to limit the height or size of their hotels in certain regions.
Specific international events, such as the current economic recession, have had major impacts on

How Did The United States Build The Erie Canal
America s Great Canal: The Erie Canal During the 1800 s there was no clear passage to take
from New York to the American west. This created an issue as the expense to transport goods
such as wheat and flour would be a costly amount of approximately $100 per ton. Due to the
Appalachian Mountains New York was secluded from much of western America. The Canal took
approximately nine years to be completed, despite funding issues that were presented the canal
proved to be an expense well made. The Erie Canal(Clinton s Ditch) was a project known to be
doubted upon by political figures, yet despite political opposes to the idea, the result of the
canal was noted to be America s greatest engineering achievement of its time, as the increase of
economic prosperity arose in New York because of the canal, alongside popularity for the
regions that surrounded the canal; the canal proved to be a success. The idea to construct a
canal was continuously declined by the federal government, despite s the benefits that the canal
would bring, for this reason New York decided the fund the project on its own. It was important
to recognize that New York needed a passage which would make transportation of goods cost
efficient. It was also important to make a means for transportation that would put New York as a
place for business since it is the only way that states at the time would grow and prosper. The
problem although resided on the overall cost to make a canal. It was proposed that the

needs and fears that comes from a psychological aspect. Psychology drives attitudes and
behaviours of individuals and groups. Using Freud s analysis, Ignatieff focuses our attention on the
relationship between narcissism and aggression. Narcissism is a personality trait that involves
arrogant behavior, a lack of empathy for other people, and a need for self admiration.
Ignatieff exploration of Freud s analysis conduces him to the assumption that nationalism and
narcissism are two allied expressions. He says:
A nationalist takes the neutral facts about people their language, habit, culture, tradition, and history
and turns these facts into a narrative, whose purpose is to illuminate the self consciousness of a
group, to enable them to think of themselves as a nation with a claim to self determination. A
nationalist, in other words, takes minor differences indifferent in themselves and transforms them
into major differences (45).
This passage shows that nationalism is a sort of narcissism. Yugoslavs nationalists wanted a nation
where all walks of people in Yugoslavia could live together as one single group. They neglected
minor differences

What Is The Theme Of Darkling By Thomas Hardy
This is a poem written on December 31st, 1899. Hardy wrote it at the end of a century. During
the time that this poem was written there was a lot of violence such as the boxer rebellion,
Philippine American war and the second Boer war, it is important to have a bit of context for the
poem to understand where all the hopelessness is coming from. The words darkling thrush paint a
picture of this little thrush bird trying to break the darkness of the scene and spread hope but
ultimately fails. Darkling means in darkness, or becoming dark, as Hardy can still see the
landscape, and the sun is weakening but not completely set therefore the title could literally mean
the thrush that sang as night was approaching. Hardy starts the poem... Show more content on

Video Games Scapegoat
Are video games the modern day scapegoat for violent behavior among youths? Christopher
Ferguson states that video games have become the newest in a long line of scapegoats,
explanations rely on weak social science... In past centuries, a variety of art forms have taken
blame for societies problems. From religious text, to literature, to jazz, to rock n roll, and rap...
People have viewed various forms of media as being responsible for personal failings (Ferguson
2007). These statements show that society has also had a tendency to blame their shortcomings on
whatever seems to be the newest thing to arise in popular culture, and that no real evidence has
been found to prove a correlation between aggressionand video games. In his argument Ferguson

Persuasive Essay On Free Contraceptives
Free Contraception Whether contraceptives should be provided at no charge is a huge debate in
the United States. Controversy emerge red through this causing millions to take a stand. The use
of contraception has a very important role in the lives of women and their partners. In an action
to have all forms of contraception be free the number of unwanted pregnancies, abortions, health
issues, and the spread of sexually transmitted diseases would decrease. A women s health is
affected by contraception. In a study done by Health Line a woman s digestive, integumentary,
cardiovascular, central nervous, and reproductive systems are greatly altered by the use of these
products. In fact, they can even be used to help treat other health concerns such as menstrual
relief, skin changes, and more (Health Link). With the use of contraception their bodies are able
to benefit and be modified. It is not only a way women use to be relieved of pain but to improve
their skin. Another prevented cause of contraception is the decline in spread of std s. By using
protection and contraceptives there is a more difficult process to spread the diseases. It is
important to keep in mind that the best method for an individual and her or his partner depends on
which method the couple will use consistently and properly (Peer Health). It is important to gain
trust with a partner to provide safe sex and ensure their health. By providing this necessity a woman

The Story behind Diamonds
Diamonds are one of the most popular minerals in the world and yet people are not aware of the
circumstances it takes to acquire this such unique mineral. Many people would agree when I say
that this mineral is such a nice thing to look at, but few people actually know what it is made of
and how it was formed. These precious minerals are composed of Carbon. The process to making
this immaculate mineral is as following. First, you must bury Carbon dioxide deep into the earth;
approximately, 100 miles deep. Second, you must heat the substance at a temperature of 2,200
degrees fahrenheit. Next, squeeze or tightly compact the substance under pressure of 725,000
pounds per square inch. Finally, it must quickly rush to the earths surface to cool off. All this must
be done just to create diamond. Luckily for some men, scientist have created an alternative of the
mined diamonds, it is a synthetic diamond composed of the same things and look almost
identical. So if you re planning to pop the big question soon you have options with that part of the
proposal. When you think of the price of real diamonds you might think that they are pretty
expensive and what makes them so special. Along with its looks, it is a rare mineral that still has a
high demand. The places where you can find high concentrations are usually far away. As a matter
of fact, the location that has the largest concentration of diamonds is in central and southern Africa.
It is reported that they have 49% of

Theme Of Perseverance In October Sky
It s not that I m so smart, it s just that I stay with problems longer, by Albert Einstein. By
persevering and not giving up, success can be reached. Perseverance is one of the themes in the
novel October Sky . This book revealed the life of a young boy, Homer Hickam Jr., also called
Sonny, who fought for his dream of building rockets against all odds amongst a small mining
town. As time elapsed in the novel, Sonny matured and learned many lessons about rocketry and
life, such as pursuing a dream, the influence of an important person, personal ambition versus
loyalty to someone else... Amongst all the important themes in the novel, persevering against all
odds is the most important one. The Rocket Boys faced countless failure and errors during their
rocket building. With almost no support from the rest of the town, the Rocket Boys had barely any
resource when they started. Living in a town full of miners, building rockets received criticism and
mocking from townspeople and even his family.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Although the hallucinations caused by the drug are short, the effect is almost instant. DMT is
passing through three barriers with the help of three different active transport mechanisms to be
compartmentalized and stored within the brain. With this process, high intracellular and
vesicular concentrations of DMT can be achieved within neurons. The outlined stages of uptake
reveal that considerable physiological effort is exerted for the accumulation and storage of
DMT and suggest that it has vital importance, since only a few compounds such as glucose and
amino acids are known to be treated with similar priority. These extensive specialized processes
would not have evolved to target a toxic compound or merely because of the psychedelic effects
of DMT. DMT is a powerful and psychologically dangerous drug because the trip is so strong for

constancy hath left you unattended . (Act 2 Scene 2, Lines 67 72)

This quote is said after Macbeth kills Duncan, Macbeth brings the daggers back and Lady
Macbeth believes Macbeth is a fool. She goes and gets the job done by rubbing blood on the
guards by herself. She then says this quote and it reveals her true personality. Macbeth is
reflecting on what he has done because he feels guilty; Lady Macbeth is implying that she
would be ashamed if her heart was to be as weak and caring as his. This quote is important
because it reveals both Lady Macbeths and Macbeth s character. Lady Macbeth is evil, clever
and heartless. Macbeth on the other hand is kind, caring and gentle. This quote follows the
theme of masculinity because Lady Macbeth is questioning Macbeth s manhood by asking him
why he is so pure. Macbeth feels that all the water in the world cannot wash away Duncan s
blood from his hands but Lady Macbeth tells him that a little wash will do the job. Lady
Macbeth has masculine traits because she comes up with the plan to murder Duncan and she
smears blood on the guards. Lady Macbeth takes advantage of Macbeth; he does anything she
tells him to do. Lady Macbeth controls Macbeth like a puppet. Shakespeare uses the literary
device of imagery in this passage. As Lady Macbeth states my hands are of your colour, this
creates an image of bloody hands. Throughout this quote there is an image displayed of Lady
Macbeth controlling Macbeth as a puppet. This is important because it

The Case Of Griswold V. Connecticut

Griswold v. Connecticut
The first Supreme Court case that I listened to was one brought forth in front of the Warren Court
in 1965. The case of Griswold v. Connecticut is a very significant case regarding contraceptive use,
counsel and advice with married couples. The case later played a great reference in the
Constitutional rights for abortion. The Griswold v. Connecticut case went in front of the Supreme
Court in March and was passed a few months later in June by a vote of 7 2 in favor of Griswold.
Griswold was the Executive Director of a Planned Parenthood Clinic in Connecticut. The State of
Connecticut charged her and her Medical Director, Dr. Buxton, for giving advice and medical...

The statutes were being challenged on the due process clause under the Fourteenth Amendment and
the First Amendment regarding the Freedom of Speech. At the time of this case it was illegal to
sale or prescribe contraceptives for the prevention of pregnancy, but not for the prevention of
disease.
At the beginning of the oral argument the appellant s lawyer, Thomas I. Emerson was asked if the
case was an equal opportunity case. He verbally stumbled and was delayed with his response to
the Judges. The Judges asked several times why it was not being argued as an equal opportunity
case due to the distinction that only married women received treatment and counsel from the
Planned Parenthood Clinic. His only response was that was not the issue of this case.
Emerson stated the history of the case in order to paint his picture to the Judges. Mrs. Griswold
did not have a medical license, but was allowed to work under the umbrella of the clinic s
Medical Director, Dr. Buxton. The clinic was only open for ten days when the two appellants were
arrested and charged for the counsel and distribution of contraceptives to married women, at which
time the clinic was forced to close. Three of the married women that received treatment and counsel
provided by the clinic were fined and later testified against

Comparing Ray Bradbury s Dark They Were, And Golden-Eyed
In the story Dark They Were, and Golden Eyed by Ray Bradbury, there is this group of intelligent
human beings who realized that Earth would one day receive an atomic bomb that would end the
populations on Earth. These humans became very frightened of their predictions so they bought a
ticket to Mars and flew off to safety, or what they thoughtwas safety. The humans thought they
found the perfect place to repopulate their species but they were wrong, they were restarting the
Martian species. They were completely changed and lost all memory of Earth. After this story was

Witchcraft Hysteria Analysis
Were Socioeconomic Tensions Responsible for the Witchcraft Hysteria in Salem? According to
differences of in opinions by three authors, socioeconomic tensions were responsible for the
Witchcraft Hysteria in Salem. The Salem witchcraft hysteria of 1692 was prompted by economic
and social tensions that occurred against the backdrop of an emergent commercial capitalism ...,
which divided the residents in Salem Town and Salem Village. In addition, the witchcraft hysteria
was the product of people s responses to physical and neurological behaviors ... . Although two of
the three authors agree that the hysteria was based on the socioeconomic tensions, the third author
agrees to some extent; however, explains the hysteria in medical terms. Thus, giving the reader
another avenue to view what may have happened in Salem. The hysteria started with three women
who were dabbling in voodoo. Many lives were lost based on the paranoia caused by these women.
Author s Paul Boyer and Stephen Nissenbaum, in their article Salem Possessed: The Social Origins
of Witchcraft , believed that the Salem witchcraft hysteria was due to economic and social tensions.
The following supports their beliefs, The inner tension that shaped the Puritan temper were inherent

Suffering In The Rime Of The Ancient Mariner
The following stanza from part four of Samuel Taylor Coleridge s, The Rime of the Ancient
Mariner occurs just after the Mariners entire crew dropped to the ground dead. The mariner
could do nothing but watch as his dead crew lie on the deck and remember the cold, evil look
they left with him. The Mariner goes then experiences a period of suffering of his own; for he
feels responsible for the death of his crew. The stanza above shows the colossal guilt the mariner
suffers with and the retribution that he goes through for his sinful act of killing the Albatross.
As the Mariner tells his tale to the wedding guest, he mentions to him subtle details of his dead
crew s corpses that make you wonder why they are relevant to even mention. As the cold sweat
leaks from his crew members limbs, it is a metaphor for the Mariner s anxious behavior. He slowly
begins to notice the guilt he feels for the death of his crew. The Mariner then goes on to think about

on to explain that a curse found in a dead man s eye is even more horrible than the orphan s
curse. This shows the brutality and damage that has affected the Mariner, and the retribution he
suffers with. The Mariner saw this curse for seven days, seven nights, as a punishment for all he
had done. Yet I could not die, the Mariner sat in the middle of the ocean for seven days, and

Abstract
Steve Cowan is the owner of a distribution company of salon hair products. The company,
Professional Salon Concepts, (PSC) was growing and decided to upgrade their AIS to support the
demands of the company. Steve hired Mike, his brother in law to assist him and the two of them
began to research the different products available believing they could better determine the needs of
the company than a consultant could. After a short time they bought first one and then changing
their minds and bought a second system. After a short training period the new system was installed

Missing Features
How could PSC have avoided the problem of the missing features? If PSC had gotten RFPs the
problem of missing features in the system they chose would have been eliminated during the
vendor selection process. However, in the route they did take those features that were important to
Steve but were not included in the AIS could have been included by having a systems requirements
list and a written contract with the specifications explicitly written out.
Conversion and Reporting
How could PSC have avoided some of the conversion and reporting problems it faced? As I stated
before, more time was needed in the testing and training portion of the conversion before the new
AIS went online. One trick I learned from our own system change at the city I work in is to train
a few operators on the new systems during the testing phase and then have them train a few more
in their own departments. By using your own employees to train each other they are gaining a
better understanding of how the system works. This way on the day of the change you have more
people who understand the system and how to fix or correct the things that can go wrong. The
more people you can have trained this way before the system change the better off you will be at
the critical moment.

Introduction In today s modern society shaped by economic and social challenges, business strategy
has never been more important. A rethink of theoretical managementpractices is fundamental to
establishing innovative strategic design to cope with these challenges. (Hahn et al, 2010). This is
not a new idea, in fact, in 2009, Guerrera challenged Michael Porter s underlying premise that
businesses are there to make money while Figge and Hahn (2008) go as far as to accuse such
strategies of aggravating the current economic situation. Henry Mintzberg s ... Show more content

They conclude that meaning, compromising perspective, knowledge, and learning, underlies action.
[p88] It is evident that this debate will continue to grow in interest and relevance in a modern,
global society and it is important to look at the underlying premise behind Mintzberg s conviction.
Underlying premise Mintzberg s underlying assumption is that businesses must learn which
opportunities are available in the current and future environments and to do this, strategy must be
developed by managers at the operational level: built from occasional nuggets they uncover [p111]
and not by senior managers and analysts in an ivory tower looking backwards at past data. Birger
Wernerfelt, (1984) illustrates an organisation driven, resource based view of strategy in which firms
can influence the environment in which they operate. Wernerfelt argues that firms must first
understand their organisation and develop ways to shape their business surroundings accordingly.
On the other side of this learning debate, Porter (1985) presents a positioning approach where the
role of the strategist is to identify the external forces of the environment (Competitive forces Model:
Porter, 1979) and find a unique and valuable position in which the firm can flourish. As is typical in
organisational strategy, nothing is clear cut and indeed Mintzberg s article draws parallels with
both Wernerfelt and Porter. In this article, he argues that organisations must learn which
opportunities are

Strength is operationally defined as the maximal force that can be exerted in a single effort. Using this definition, strength should be assessed using one repetition maximum (1 RM), though we often estimate strength using tests that may involve multiple repetitions. 2. This improvement is due to CNS adaptation because there is no hypertrophic gain during this short period. Another example which proves the importance of CNS adaptations related to strength gains is that strength performance may increase by 30% while hypertrophic gains may only be 15%, thus half of the strength gains is attributable to CNS adaptations. It is speculated that during and following a high intensity strength training session the neuroendocrine responses will bring about an increased amino acid uptake and will increase the rate of protein synthesis. Optimal hypertrophic gains require adequate recovery between workouts to permit the rate of protein synthesis to exceed the rate of protein degradation. It should also be noted that strength training also stimulates bone and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 12. Voyeurism In Alfred Hitchcock s Rear Window Alfred Hitchcock s Rear Window (1954), is a psychological thriller that addresses themes of voyeurism as well as morality and ethics. The film is centered around L.B. Jeffries, an action photographer who is wheelchair bound following an accident that has left him with a broken leg. Stuck within the confides of his apartment, he finds pleasure observing the lives of his neighbors through his rear window. Things change for Jeffries when he believes that he has witnessed the murder of one of his neighbours. This essay analyzes the concluding fifteen minutes of the film, in which many of the films overarching questions are answered. Alfred Hitchcockuses the characters in Rear Window to control the emotions of the audience, he does this by projecting the emotions of characters onto the viewers. This raises questions of the morality and consequences of voyeurism, as well as questions of human curiosity.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The And The French Revolution Casper David Friedrich was a German Romantic artist in the nineteenth century that is most known for his landscape paintings that display the romantic ideals of individualism, nature, physical and emotional passion and an interest in the mysteries of the world. Where did these ideals of Romanticism begin? Taking a look back into the 17th century, there was another intellectual movement that changed society, culture and politics. The Enlightenment was a time period lasting throughout the 18th century which brought about the Age of Reason in which politics, philosophy, and science dominated in Europe. The philosophies of the Enlightenment placed emphasis on rational and scientific thought and viewed the natural world as one that is governed mathematically and by scientific laws which could be understood by humankind. The Enlightened philosophies brought about this drastic change in all aspects of society which influenced the several revolutions of that time period such as the American and the French revolutions. After the French Revolution, the concepts of the Old Regime and traditions of the past in Europe were abolished while new concepts introduced by the Enlightenment were being implemented in all areas of politics, culture and society. Although it is underappreciated by many, those who have had it taken away are those who truly understand, and are grateful for, the fortunes of freedom. Freedom to Breathe, written by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, accentuates the importance of truly valuing liberty based upon his own personal experiences. Diction and figurative language accompany the use of symbolism to produce a gracious and peaceful tone that is utilized to demonstrate the importance of appreciating freedom through the eyes of a prisoner. Repetition of phrasesand words creates an emphasis on the importance of appreciating small possessions. For instance, throughout the first two paragraphs the phraseI breathe is constantly repeated to create a tone of content. Solzhenitsyn uses the repetition of the phrase I breathe to show the reader how noticing even the smallest of freedoms will give a person an optimistic view towards a bad situation. For instance, Solzhenitsyn states This, I believe, is the single most precious freedom that prison takes away from us: the freedom to breathe freely, as I now can (3) Upon his experiences, Solzhenitsyn finds that the greatest deprivation within imprisonment is the absence to breathe freely among nature. Amaranth s main energy trader was Brian Hunter, a 32 year old Canadian and the former head of Deutsche Bank s natural gas trading desk. In September 2005, Amaranth made more than $1 billion when Hurricanes Katrina and Rita hit the U.S Gulf Coast. These Hurricanes disrupted the supply of natural gas, and gas prices soared to record highs, just as Hunter had predicted. The rise in natural gas prices drove Amaranth s 15% return for 2005, as the rest of the portfolio performed poorly. Why Natural Gas market was unique relative to other commodities: It is because of gaseous form of natural gas made transportation difficult. Although natural gas could be liquefied and exported overseas, this process was both expensive and potentially hazardous. Strategy used by the natural gas traders: One common strategy is to bet on the price of futures for the winter contract months. Many factors can influence the price of winter contracts, for e.g., a strong hurricane season that disrupts supplies just before winter. Traders who believe either a cold winter or a strong hurricane season will occur will take a long position in winter future contracts. • 28. Evolution And Adaptive Value Of Brood Parasitism Within... The Evolution and Adaptive Value of Brood Parasitism within Cuckoo Birds. Abstract Brood parasitism is a unique behavior performed by some species that tricks another host species into raising its young. This is a fairly common behavior among the Cuculidae family of which 53 of the 136 species perform brood parasitism. My question and what I hope to review within this paper is, what has caused brood parasitism, what has shaped it, and what are the adaptive values of Cuckoo brood parasitism? Within Cuckoo s, this strange behavior has ultimately been shaped through environmental pressures and has become advantageous. Ecological changes forced Cuckoo s to change migrational patterns, habitat, range size, and foraging, which lead to brood parasitism. Once brood parasitism arose, a coevolutionary arms race began between the Cuckoo s and hosts. Due to parasitic egg rejections, Cuckoo eggs that closely resembled host eggs were selected for, leading to higher success rates of the behavior. This gives Cuckoo s many advantageous , as there is no longer a need for investing time and energy into raising their young. Brood parasitism also gives Cuckoo s the advantage of exploiting diverse breeding habitats; reduced diet restraints, and foraging. Ultimately this behavior provides many benefits to Cuckoos and allows them successfully raise young while providing no parental care. Instead of having shows that glamorize pregnancy, we should have shows that educate teens on the real facts of being pregnant. • 31. Summary Of Siddhartha By Herman Hess Essay Austin Burchett Dr. Bain Selbo Dr. Samuels RELS 200: World religious literature November 10, 2016 Siddhartha is a novel written by Herman Hess, that tells the story based off one of the past lives of the Buddha. In the story, Siddhartha Gautama is on a quest to pursue spiritual enlightenment by seeking guidance from external sources such as Buddhists, Brahmins, Samanas, and even in the material world. Throughout his spiritual pilgrimage, Siddhartha eventually discovers that he cannot learn how to achieve spiritual enlightenment by only relying on exterior sources of spiritual guidance. Siddhartha finally fulfills his Nirvana when he has an internal connection to the river that allowed him to see the complexity of existence. In my opinion, exterior paths for Siddhartha, is not essential to achieving Nirvana but I believe that without exterior guidance, finding internal guidance would be merely impossible. During Siddhartha s youth, he would always sit and talk with the elders to further understand the Brahmin heritage and achieve all the knowledge he possibly could. After gaining all the wisdom of the Brahmin, Siddhartha tells his father that he believes he and the other scholarly Brahmin have learned nearly everything from the holy books, but he is concerned that they have not yet achieved enlightenment. Siddhartha feels that the rituals he has been taught by the Brahmin, seem more like a custom than an actual path to enlightenment. One evening Siddhartha reveals to his ... The Employment at Will Doctrine Doctrine liability employer based actions responses employee s behavior actions Introduction The employment at will doctrine has always been a difficult matter to comprehend and America is the only country that practices it. Other countries such as Japan, Great Britain, Italy, Canada, Sweden and France all have mandatory provisions that make it a requirement that employers must have a good reason for any termination of an employee. In the United States from the beginning of 1980s, the doctrine came under immense challenge as the employees felt dissatisfied with the doctrine. This is because they felt that they were more often discharged unfairly despite years of hard work in a company. This led to three exceptions being made to the doctrine that saw the number of employment fall between 2% to 5% that year. These exceptions are; 1. Where there is a breach of contract by an employer, 2. Where there is a breach of a covenant of Good faith and fair dealing, 3. Where the employer violates a public policy, which is part of a government policy (Sentell Robbins 2008). However, it was doubtful that many, if any blacks, were permitted to read any of Wheatley s work. Wheatley tended to write many religiously based poems. They all consisted of her true opinions. They ranged from speaking about dead reverends that she respected to her opinions about the lives of Atheist and Deist. Atheism called out the downfalls that Wheatley believed to be corrupting the lives of those that did not believe in God. She accused Atheists of being self centered and selfish, and she wrote, [t]hy heart in unbelief will harder grow...Thy unbelief disturbs the peaceful mind (Wheatley 130). Since Wheatley had found her freedom in her Christianity, she felt as though Christianity was the sole road to happiness during and after life. Illusions and Realities in Ibsen s Plays The Wild Duck and Ghosts In Ibsen s The Wild Duck, illusions and reality are set into a conflict within the story of a son s personal desire to confront idealism. Throughout much of the play, the son, Greger, argues the value of truth with the reluctant Dr. Relling. Relling insists on the importance of illusions, but fails to discourage Greger s intentions and a play that begins as a comedy quickly turns into a tragedy because of these conflicts. Further there is a psychological dimension of the ethnic nationalism that is centered around peoples perceptions when questioning their identity. Conflict is a process driven by collective needs and fears that comes from a psychological aspect. Psychology drives attitudes and behaviours of individuals and groups. Using Freud s analysis, Ignatieff focuses our attention on the relationship between narcissism and aggression. Narcissism is a personality trait that involves arrogant behavior, a lack of empathy for other people, and a need for self admiration. Ignatieff exploration of Freud s analysis conduces him to the assumption that nationalism and narcissism are two allied expressions. He says: A nationalist takes the neutral facts about people their language, habit, culture, tradition, and history and turns these facts into a narrative, whose purpose is to illuminate the self consciousness of a group, to enable them to think of themselves as a nation with a claim to self determination. A nationalist, in other words, takes minor differences indifferent in themselves and transforms them into major differences (45). This passage shows that nationalism is a sort of narcissism. • 53. Suffering In The Rime Of The Ancient Mariner The following stanza from part four of Samuel Taylor Coleridge s, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner occurs just after the Mariners entire crew dropped to the ground dead. The mariner could do nothing but watch as his dead crew lie on the deck and remember the cold, evil look they left with him. The Mariner goes then experiences a period of suffering of his own; for he feels responsible for the death of his crew. The stanza above shows the colossal guilt the mariner suffers with and the retribution that he goes through for his sinful act of killing the Albatross. As the Mariner tells his tale to the wedding guest, he mentions to him subtle details of his dead crew s corpses that make you wonder why they are relevant to even mention. As the cold sweat leaks from his crew members limbs, it is a metaphor for the Mariner s anxious behavior. He slowly begins to notice the guilt he feels for the death of his crew. The Mariner then goes on to think about the look with which they ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He compares it to an orphan s curse that could drag to hell/a spirit from on high. When it says a spirit from on high it is referring to an angel from up in heaven. So an angel that is caught with the orphan s curse can be snatched from heaven and drug straight to hell. The Mariner then goes on to explain that a curse found in a dead man s eye is even more horrible than the orphan s curse. This shows the brutality and damage that has affected the Mariner, and the retribution he suffers with. The Mariner saw this curse for seven days, seven nights, as a punishment for all he had done. Yet I could not die, the Mariner sat in the middle of the ocean for seven days, and seven nights with the curse in a dead men s eye and yet I could not die. The Mariner felt so much guilt, he felt as if he should die. He begins to think about how unfair it was that he got to live and his entire crew had to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Ais Implementation Case Study Essay Professional Salon Concepts Project III Kirstin Johnson DeVry University Abstract Steve Cowan is the owner of a distribution company of salon hair products. The company, Professional Salon Concepts, (PSC) was growing and decided to upgrade their AIS to support the demands of the company. Steve hired Mike, his brother in law to assist him and the two of them began to research the different products available believing they could better determine the needs of the company than a consultant could. After a short time they bought first one and then changing their minds and bought a second system. After a short training period the new system was installed with some very problematic first few days. Eventually the system was up ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Missing Features How could PSC have avoided the problem of the missing features? If PSC had gotten RFPs the problem of missing features in the system they chose would have been eliminated during the vendor selection process. However, in the route they did take those features that were important to Steve but were not included in the AIS could have been included by having a systems requirements list and a written contract with the specifications explicitly written out. Conversion and Reporting How could PSC have avoided some of the conversion and reporting problems it faced? As I stated before, more time was needed in the testing and training portion of the conversion before the new AIS went online. One trick I learned from our own system change at the city I work in is to train a few operators on the new systems during the testing phase and then have them train a few more in their own departments. By using your own employees to train each other they are gaining a better understanding of how the system works. This way on the day of the change you have more people who understand the system and how to fix or correct the things that can go wrong. The more people you can have trained this way before the system change the better off you will be at the critical moment. Steve s Analysis Steve s analysis of the numbers is incomplete in my opinion. Steve looked ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Contents Page Introduction Placing the article in wider literature debate Underlying theoretical assumptions Strengths and Weaknesses Concluding remarks References 2 2 3 4 5 6 Introduction In today s modern society shaped by economic and social challenges, business strategy has never been more important. A rethink of theoretical managementpractices is fundamental to establishing innovative strategic design to cope with these challenges. (Hahn et al, 2010). This is not a new idea, in fact, in 2009, Guerrera challenged Michael Porter s underlying premise that businesses are there to make money while Figge and Hahn (2008) go as far as to accuse such strategies of aggravating the current economic situation. Henry Mintzberg s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They conclude that meaning, compromising perspective, knowledge, and learning, underlies action. [p88] It is evident that this debate will continue to grow in interest and relevance in a modern, global society and it is important to look at the underlying premise behind Mintzberg s conviction. Underlying premise Mintzberg s underlying assumption is that businesses must learn which opportunities are available in the current and future environments and to do this, strategy must be developed by managers at the operational level: built from occasional nuggets they uncover [p111] and not by senior managers and analysts in an ivory tower looking backwards at past data. Birger Wernerfelt, (1984) illustrates an organisation driven, resource based view of strategy in which firms can influence the environment in which they operate. Wernerfelt argues that firms must first understand their organisation and develop ways to shape their business surroundings accordingly. On the other side of this learning debate, Porter (1985) presents a positioning approach where the role of the strategist is to identify the external forces of the environment (Competitive forces Model: Porter, 1979) and find a unique and valuable position in which the firm can flourish. As is typical in organisational strategy, nothing is clear cut and indeed Mintzberg s article draws parallels with both Wernerfelt and Porter. In this article, he argues that organisations must learn which opportunities are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
