Maximizers take initiative by doing more than the minimum required. They notice what needs to be done and do it without being asked. Maintainers do what is expected of them but do not look for extra tasks. Minimizers do as little as possible and try to avoid work. Being a maximizer has benefits - people respect their passion and initiative, which inspires others. The text encourages the reader to become a maximizer by striving for excellence and making a difference through initiative and effort.

How Tools Have Shaped the Role of the Designer
A few weeks ago I had the opportunity to deliver a talk at Shift in Split, Croatia.
Shift is a developer conference, so initially, I thought it would be entertaining to talk about what it’s like to work with an engineer, from a designers perspective. The working title of the talk was Things Engineers Hate About Working With (Me) a Designer.
I was going to share the mistakes I’ve made, and learned from, along the way. A manifesto of what not to do when working with an engineer. However, feedback included phrases like “it’s a bit tongue & cheek” and the best talks are ones that are “raw, honest and vulnerable.”
You don’t write code, but you’ve been successful in spite of it. The lines are blurring between design & engineering. Why not talk about how tools have helped bridge that gap?
There was something more interesting to talk about. I realized that I didn’t write code because I didn’t need to. For years I’d been spoiled, and to some extent enabled, by a handful of incredibly talented iOS engineers. The realization didn’t sit well with me.
I scrapped everything and went back to the drawing board.

They have been steadily influencing and shaping me as a designer from the first time I sat in front of a computer in elementary school. I would not realize how much they’d impact my life until much much later.

Summative Reflection
The student provides a summary and evaluation of various digital tools and platforms used for their project. They found the Personal Learning Environment (PLE) to be the most helpful as it organized all their sources in one place. The RSS feed and Scoop.it were less useful as they did not surface relevant information for the topic. Videos, documentaries, and audio sources added value by providing first-hand perspectives. Wikispace and Wordpress were challenging to use but fulfilled their purposes. Prezi was frustrating to create but produced high quality, engaging presentations.

What’s New and Exciting in Library Makerspaces
Libraries have been places of discovery and learning for a long time, but they are now taking it a step further, thanks to the makerspace movement, by providing an initial spark for ideas that may grow into an intellectual flame down the road. A makerspace is a collaborative learning environment where people of all ages and with common interests (e.g., science, technology, engineering, arts, and math — STEAM) can meet, socialize and/or collaborate while sharing innovative ideas and learning new skills. People can now visit their local library makerspace and gain hands-on experiences with emerging technologies that they probably do not have access to otherwise. WORKSHOP: Making the World Easier with Interaction Design
Interaction designers aim to make technology intuitive and easy to use. Their goal is to prevent user frustration by ensuring products function as expected. The presentation discusses interaction design through an example of redesigning a microwave user interface. It encourages brainstorming ideas, sketching prototypes, and testing designs with others.
