Vocabulary
For all those who want good language acquisition,
learning vocabulary is essential. It even enhances
both grammatical and comprehension skills.
2. Vocabulary can be classified into
four higher categories
•Meaning/Oral Vocabulary
•Receptive Vocabulary
•Expressive Vocabulary
•Literate/Written Vocabulary
These are further interconnected by the types including listening,
speaking, writing and reading.

• Level I
• Level II
• Level III

5. Level I words –
These words are used in everyday speech over and over. Since these are
frequently used kids learn them quickly. Example: house, cat umbrella, girl etc.
Level II words –
These are likely to be learned only through instruction or reading. These are
referred to as the vocabulary of the educated person.
Level III words –
These words are associated with a particular professional or field. These make up
technical vocabulary.
Level IV words –
These kinds of words are interesting but quiet rare. Such words are not even
associated with any professional or field of study.
As per the classification teachers mainly focus on level II & level III words for
students.
6. Recommendation by parents &
teachers
The most common recommendation is read aloud to
the children. As far as reading is concerned it is
important to perform this activity. This activity is
required for the immediate success in enhancing
vocabulary.
7. It is important to make children understand the right
meaning of words. All prefixes and suffixes are to be
understood well. Though it is more relevant to the
English language, but still is given importance as far as
vocabulary is concerned.
