2. WHAT IS PHONICS?
●Involves connection of sound to letters or groups of letters.
●A method involves teaching how to connect the sounds spoken English
with letters or groups of letters
●The relationship between sounds & spelling in printed text
●The ability to recognise phonemes or graphemes (sounds) in spoken
words and so it is an oral skill and not a written skill as in phonics
●Phonemes : there are approximately 44 sounds in the English Language
●Graphemes : the singular or group of letters used to represent the sounds

3. WHY PHONICS?
●In some writing systems of non-English languages, pictographs are used to
represent meanings of sounds, while the English alphabet represents sounds.
To read Englis well and have strong communication skills, children must learn
the sound of English letters and understand how they work together. When
phonics is introduced as a way to teach English, children can learn correct
prenunciation and grammar to avoid flaws that will result in poor communication.
●According to the National Institutte of Child Health & Human Development
(NICHD), approximately 90 to 95 percetnt of reading-impaired children may
achieve their reading goals if given the proper instruction and treatment . It
recommends that children be taught phonics and language instruction.
