If I go back some twenty or so years, I remember our family and friends gathering back in my wife’s hometown for many weddings, baptisms, and other sacraments. But as time has moved on and age begins to creep up on our generation, it seems that recently we have gathered all too often to mourn the death of one of our loved ones.
And so, this afternoon we remember the life and the love of Vincent. And while Vincent was physically and emotionally dis-abled – when it came to love he had the capacity to be very ‘able’ indeed. Being in the season of Lent while writing this homily gave me reason to pause and to believe that in some respect I think Vincent had an advantage over most, if not all of us.
What was that advantage…and how did he impact the lives around him? Check it out…

I was blessed to have just returned from spending three weeks with my nineteen-month-old granddaughter, Bloom. As a father and grandfather I really enjoy the celebration of the Feast of the Holy Family which allows us to look at how this God incarnate…this Christ Child…this God among us has a direct connection to our daily life and our family. Which raises questions like: How do we as a community of believers share the blessings from this table onto others? How can we help others see God in themselves? How do we bring the gift and graces from the altar table onto the table of our homes? Perhaps a story about a father, his daughter and Mr. Rodgers will shed some light... Check it out…
The Gospel tells us that the disciples had no idea what ‘risen from the dead’ even meant. Do we? Wisdom from Pope Francis…and from children in an African tribe may just open our eyes in a new way so that we can better see how we are connected in our call to make all things new. And that Easter tells us that through the life, death and resurrection of Christ, love wins out over death every time and therefore nothing dies forever and that all that has died in love will be reborn into an even larger love – into the Body of Christ. In Jude 17-23 Jude shifts from piling up examples of false teachers from the Old Testament to a series of practical exhortations that flow from apostolic instruction. He preserves for us what may well have been part of the apostolic catechism for the first generation of Christ-followers. In these instructions Jude exhorts the believer to deal with 3 different groups of people: scoffers who are "devoid of the Spirit", believers who have come under the influence of scoffers and believers who are so entrenched in false teaching that they need rescue and pose some real spiritual risk for the rescuer. In all of this Jude emphasizes Jesus' call to rescue straying sheep, leaving the 99 safely behind and pursuing the 1.

Mindfulness increases awareness of our emotions and teaches us to manage them better, leading to improved mood.
Regular mindfulness practice can improve our ability to concentrate and focus our attention on the present moment.
Slide 4: Benefits of Mindfulness for Physical Health
Research has shown that practicing mindfulness can contribute to lowering blood pressure, which is beneficial for heart health.
Regular meditation and mindfulness practice can strengthen the immune system, aiding the body in fighting infections.
Mindfulness may help reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes and obesity by reducing stress and improving overall lifestyle habits.
Slide 5: Impact of Mindfulness on Relationships
Mindfulness can help us better understand others and improve communication, leading to healthier relationships.
By focusing on the present moment and being fully attentive, mindfulness helps build stronger and more authentic connections with others.
Mindfulness teaches us how to be present for others in difficult times, leading to increased compassion and understanding.
Slide 6: Mindfulness Techniques and Practices
Focusing on the breath and mindful breathing can be a simple way to enter a state of mindfulness.
Body scan meditation involves focusing on different parts of the body, paying attention to any sensations and feelings.
Practicing mindful walking and eating involves consciously focusing on each step or bite, with full attention to sensory experiences.
Slide 7: Incorporating Mindfulness into Daily Life

Mission
Tates Creek Christian Church exists to win
people to Christ (evangelism), build up believers
in faith, knowledge, and service (encouragement),
to help those in need (benevolence), and to stand up
for Christian values in the community (witness).
3. Tidbits from Tommy
One of the questions that I am often asked about Tates Creek
is this, “Does the church have any debt?” The answer to that
question is, “Yes.” Assuming that the next question is, “How
much?” I try to provide the current figure for the indebtedness.
The current debt is $1,542,974. I also add that if they would like
to write a check for that amount, the church would be very appreciative. All
joking aside, the Tates Creek Church has always had a healthy attitude toward
paying off debt. The cost of the present Worship Center was $2,800,000, and
the church eliminated that debt in seven years. Granted, there were two gifts
to the church that totaled one million dollars, which helped eliminate the debt
sooner.
The latest addition to the church plus repaving the parking lot and a major
maintenance item totaled $3.8 million. Pledges from the Growing to Serve
Capital Stewardship Campaign totaled $1.8 million. Those pledges began in
December of 2007 and continued for three years through December, 2010.
If we notice, the payment for the current mortgage is not a part of our
General Fund. Therefore, we ask, “How have these payments been made
since they are not part of the General Fund?” The answer is that gracious,
generous folks have continued to give toward the Growing to Serve Capital
Stewardship Fund. Their gifts each month have been more than the payment.
The payment each month is $12,888. When the amount given each month
is over the payment amount, the extra is applied to the principal of the loan.
The rate for the loan is a variable rate. Up to this point, our rate has been 3.25
percent. However, we know that this will not last very long. So, we want to be
proactive with eliminating the debt.
Therefore, later this fall, we will experience another Capital Stewardship
Campaign with several goals; one of which will be to pay off the debt. Part
of this new campaign is to give some attention to the Worship Center with
regard to windows, carpet, and paint ~ at the least. We also want to look
beyond paying off the debt with God’s vision for the future of Tates Creek.
We are going to name the new Capital Stewardship Campaign, “What if . .”
Continued contributions from folks for the capital stewardship campaign will
now be counted toward the new campaign, “What if . .”
For Zella & me, being a part of a stewardship campaign always brings
exciting ways to see how God provides the extras to contribute to the
campaign! I trust that you will join us as together we strive and pray and give
for the advancement of our Lord’s Kingdom here on earth!

“Fall, Football, Freebies, and Faith”
One aspect of fall that I love the most is football season.
This comes as no surprise to those that have been reading
my church paper column for years. I love the NFL and my
Indianapolis Colts, but I especially love college football
and my Purdue Boilermakers.
Recently, football season has not gone too well for
the Boilermakers. Last year, our record was 1 win, 11
losses—the worst record in Purdue history. As you can
imagine, attendance has gone down alongside the team’s
record, and expectations are at the lowest they’ve been since before Drew
Brees revived the program in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
As a result, for this season’s home opener against Western Michigan,
Purdue’s athletic department “picked up the tab” on tickets so that all
Purdue students could attend the game for free! (Please understand
the immense pride I have to swallow to admit to these conditions. No
laughing, Mike Allen.) Still, they estimate that only a little over 7,000
students attended the game. The overall attendance was estimated at
37,000 people, which is not good for a stadium that seats 57,236. (And
just so you know, last fall’s student enrollment at Purdue was 38,788.)
Why do I share all of this? To show that people sometimes reject
something even though it’s free. Sometimes it’s a mediocre football game,
but sometimes it’s a gift as great as eternal life in Jesus Christ. Salvation
truly costs us nothing, but cost Jesus everything. Still, despite the free
gift of God’s grace, some reject the offer. The reason?
It’s the same reason they reject a free Purdue football
game...they don’t see value in it. Many aren’t even
sure if there is an eternity, so why bother. The Bible,
however, paints a much different picture.
So how do we compel others to see value in Jesus
Christ and in eternal life? Answer: first let the Gospel
grip you (Matthew 5:13-16). The best testimony to
others is witnessing another life that Jesus has changed.
How is our story reflecting the value of Jesus Christ to others?
In Christ, ~Nic

Several nights ago the movie “Saving Private Ryan” was on
TV and I watched again a small portion of it. I say a portion
of it, because I was very quickly reminded of how startling
a movie it was. I saw it first at the theater several years ago,
and the scenes on the television set quickly reminded me of
how hard it had been to watch the first time. For those who have never
seen it, the story was about the extraordinary sacrifices made to save one
US soldier in the European theater of World War II. I remember when
I saw it for the first time, I realized the depth of sacrifice my father and
his generation made to ensure our nation’s freedom. My father spent 18
months in a military hospital at the end of the war and throughout my
childhood steadfastly refused to talk of his war experiences. He would
never talk about them because he didn’t want me to have to experience
what he had experienced, but sometimes at night he would cry out in
his sleep from the nightmares that haunted him. The movie helped me
understand, helped me appreciate like I never had before, the sacrifices
that were made for me, and the brief time I watched the television
broadcast rekindled that appreciation. Again, I couldn’t bring myself
to watch the movie a second time because of the intensity and reality of
the portrayal of sacrifice, but since that
night I have thought of how each Lord’s
Day we participate in a remembrance.
When Jesus first instituted it in the
upper room He gave us emblems which
would remind us of his sacrifice without
forcing us to view the horrible event over
and over again. Simple, ordinary, yet
profoundly illustrative emblems. At the
end of the movie, now gray haired and aged, a man named Ryan stands
at a simple white tombstone amidst hundreds of other like tombstones in
a beautiful and peaceful military cemetery and remembers the one who
sacrificed all for his salvation. He’s made the long journey there with his
family because he wanted to say he’d never forgotten. Each Lord’s Day
we have a beautiful setting to return to in order to remember the one
who gave all for our salvation and, like Ryan, we come to say “I have not
forgotten.”

Don’s Dynamics
Autumn...a Time to Recommit!
Even though I love summer, I know that eventually a more
relaxed schedule must come to an end. I have always felt that
summer was more than a season change...it is also an attitude
change. It is important to balance work and service with
relaxation and reflection. Some of us struggle with that. But
now, we come to Autumn where we think about or re-think
our commitments to the church, volunteer service to the
community, and more structured family and work schedules.
Sometimes, when we get a break, it is hard for us to “come back”. For
others, they are anxious to get back into the routine or to try something
new. I always have mixed feelings when it comes to Autumn. It seems like
we gain some new people ready to serve or try something new and we lose
others who are not ready to recommit. In one church, I actually went back
and added up all the people who had sung in the choir over the years I had
served as a worship minister. I was amazed to note that we would have had
a choir of over 100 voices if all had continued to serve. It would probably
be similar here and that is just one example. I know other ministers have
similar experiences in their area of ministry.
So, where do you fall in these two groups? Are you the person excited to
continue or the person who struggles to recommit. May the Lord lead you in
ALL your decisions to serve Him. You will be blessed.
Over the next two months, we have the
privilege of hosting two college music
ensembles as they lead us in worship on
Sunday mornings. Both of these colleges
are supported through our mission budget
and include students from Tates Creek
Christian Church. On October 5, we will
host the Johnson University Choir (pictured above) in all three morning
services. Our own Mason Ballard is a member of the choir. We anticipate
their ministry of music with us.
On November 2, we will host Heritage, an a cappella ensemble from
Milligan College. Amanda Eversole is a member of this group that has
been a part of the music program at Milligan for many years.

7. Missions Moment Williams Family
The Missions Ministry Team recently received a summer
update from Jonathan and Jubi Williams, our missionaries
who serve at the Forefront Brooklyn (NY) church.
Forefront Brooklyn church was launched in the fall
of 2012. The 13 week average attendance on Sunday
mornings this summer is holding steady
at 167 with a high of 200 on July 20, 2014.
Jonathan writes that “we thank God for
those numbers in summer!” Summer
activities include small groups spending
time in Brooklyn serving at food pantries,
dishing out meals with Brooklyn Jubilee,
experiencing movies together in Brooklyn
Bridge Park and more. The church sent six teenagers and two adults on
a CIY Summer Retreat to Salisbury, Maryland. On the church’s June
21, 2014 day of service more than 105 people took great care of their
neighbors in eleven different community gardens, women’s shelters,
soup kitchens, and other community organizations. Overall, the church
family had an incredible day helping to bring about renewal and
restoration throughout the city.
While the church families create great
community by enjoying summer activities
together in Brooklyn, challenges continue.
The Sunday family ministry needs
volunteers. New members and coaches are
needed to step up and embrace the mission and vision of the Kidstuff
ministry this fall. Jonathan, now serving as Senior Pastor of the new
church, continues to learn his role in that capacity, and the church
continues to search for a new Location Pastor and Community Director.
The Williams request that the TCCC family pray for clarity and peace
as changes and transition continue and as the church prepares for an
increase in attendance this fall. Pray that the Holy Spirit will speak
clearly as Jonathan leads a giving and tithing series during October.
Jonathan and Jubi and their two daughters, Asha and Lyla, thank the
TCCC family for joining them on this journey and for faithful support
and encouragement.

10. “What If . .”
The daily news we hear about an ever more sinful world is truly alarming.
We see videos on TV of Christians being brutally killed by Islamic terrorists,
groups trying to remove Bibles from American hotels, elimination of
Christian values from schools, and atheists demanding prayer be silenced.
Yet we are certain that Christ will return someday soon.
All these hateful groups have one problem in common--they are missing
the salvation and peace that can only come from
knowing the true Messiah, the risen Jesus Christ.
What if we can help more people in Lexington, and
around the United States, find salvation and peace
through Christ?
What if we can make Tates Creek Christian Church an
even greater source of hope and strength for families?
In John 6:36-40 Jesus gives us three great promises...
1. The Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in
him shall have eternal life
2. Jesus will never drive away anyone seeking him
3. Jesus will lose none of all those he has been given, but raise them up at
the last day
What if we can let more people know about these three promises?
My wife Jan and I would ask each of you to prayerfully consider supporting
the Tates Creek Christian Church Stewardship Campaign.
We also ask that you give to the campaign as God enables you. This
amount would be above your normal giving level. Yes, that means sacrifice.
Additionally, everyone is at different points of faith and financial ability. As
within any family that divides the chores, we don’t expect everyone to give
the same amount. Some will be able to give more and others less. While we
all can’t give the same amount, we can all share sacrificially and give as God
has given to us.
May the Lord richly bless you in every area of life as we strive to let more
people enjoy the salvation and grace of the risen Savior, Christ Jesus!
Thank you. ~ Gregory W. Kasten

China Mission Trip
This May I found myself on a plane to China. God was already making
use of the English degree that I had received at graduation only three days
earlier. A common college ministry, Campus Outreach, had united a team
of twelve students from various Kentucky
schools, and for seven weeks we labored
on a Chinese college campus. We lived
in Harbin, a city of ten million, but spent
nearly all our time loving on students at
Northeast Forestry University, a school of twenty-eight thousand with majors
ranging from Wetland Maintenance to Marxism.
Chinese culture strongly delineates “insiders” and “outsiders.” Considering
our team featured a 6’10” hurdler and a camo-wearing eastern Kentucky
native, we were firmly in the latter group. However, our connections with
some of the English teachers provided us with a sufficient foundation to
begin relationships with students and enter the classrooms. These teachers
were trained by ELI (English Language Institute), an organization that places
English teachers who love the Lord on college campuses in Asia.
A second aspect of Chinese culture that proved
challenging was a general reservation in relationships,
even between close friends. Imagine, therefore, the
awkwardness of an “outsider” seeking to mine out deep
relationships in a matter of weeks. Even so, God is
faithful. The trip was fruitful in many ways. We were
able to breathe life into the families that were teaching English there and
serve them in various ways. As a team we studied Hebrews 11 and learned
a great deal about walking by faith, longing for our heavenly dwelling, and
living as a member of Christ’s body. Though restrained in our speech and
actions, we strove to share God’s love with each student that we met, whether
we were playing badminton, singing karaoke, or teaching grammar. Many
heard Jesus’ name for the first time and we trust the Lord was sovereign over
each interaction.
I thank my TCCC family for the prayer and financial support for this trip.
We truly felt “hemmed in behind and before” with prayer throughout. Please
continue to pray for God’s name to be glorified throughout China. Pray that
the English teachers who live in the country with their families would be
strengthened to continue being faithful. God is truly mighty to save. This
summer I witnessed first-hand Him gathering His people from
every tribe, tongue, and nation. Church, be encouraged by the
greatness of our God! ~ Sarah Bugg

Prayer
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition,
with Thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” Philippians 4:6
When I learned this verse, it quickly became my “go to” verse. Every single
time I feel happy, sad, scared, excited, concerned, or frustrated,
I turn to prayer. I can turn to Him for anything, even random
crazy purposes. And, every single time, my prayer brings
me comfort. Praying keeps worry out of my life, almost
completely. It saves me energy and time that I used to spend
worrying. I view praying as not only something to set aside a
particular time for each day but as something I can do, and should do, as I
work, taxi my kids, run errands, wait for appointments, drift off to sleep, and
wake up. Doing so makes me feel that I am never alone and that God is my
constant companion. Being a mom of two busy children and
working a full-time job, there is no way I can, nor should I,
do life without Him. ~Pam Bolt
13. We all had those songs that we loved growing up. I
remember being downstairs in Children’s Church singing a
bunch of awesome songs, one of my favorites being, “This
Little Light of Mine.” I’m sure most of us have heard this song. This
song taught us to be the light of the world. “This little light of mine-I’m
gonna let it shine. This little light of mine-I’m gonna let shine, let it shine,
let it shine.” Whether we realized it or not, from an early age we were
being taught how to evangelize because the words of this song are from
the words of Jesus:
“You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither
do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its
stand and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way let you
light shine before men that they may see your good deeds and praise your
Recently, I read an article about the intricate way
that God designed the human eye. Did you realize
that if the earth was flat, or if a person were to stand
on top of a mountain in total darkness their eye has
the potential to spot a flickering candle 30 miles
away? How amazing it is to know our eyes are so
powerful! As I think about my walk of life, am I
living enough within the darkness to let my light
shine? More specifically, do I have enough
non-Christians in my life so that Jesus can impact
their life through mine? Or, do we just live among lanterns? Think
about it . . . which is easier to see, a flickering candle in total darkness, or
a bonfire in the middle of the day? Jesus said that we are the light of the
world. How are we going to shine? As Chris Rice writes in his song, “Go
Light Your World”, he suggests: “Carry your candle, run to the darkness.
Seek out the hopeless, confused and torn. Hold out your candle for all to
see it. Take your candle, and go light your world.” Where are we going
to take the light?

14. Summer Time
The transition of our contemporary worship
service from the MMC to the Worship Center really
went great the first week. I am very thankful for
such a great group of volunteers who have helped
me make it happen logistically. I am also very
thankful for a church leadership that sees the value of having a
contemporary service and had the vision a few years ago to start
one. I am thankful that they have been willing to be flexible and
truly use this wonderful church building to reach as many people
as possible across five generations. Wow!
I’d like to take a minute to update you on the recent history of
the contemporary service or what
we like to call “The Vine”
(John 15:5). The Lord has really
been using the folks in our church to
reach out to friends and neighbors
and invite people to church. It
seems that every single week I see
new faces in the seats worshipping
with us. This is happening in every single service. The
contemporary service has grown from an average attendance of
around 110-115 a couple years back, to an average of nearly 200
over the last six weeks. The Lord is working through our church
to take his word, his love, and his message to the lost in our city.
All praise and glory and honor to Him!
I am excited to see where the future takes Tates Creek Christian
Church. I believe that as we continue to submit to His leading,
the Lord is going to use us to reach people who do not yet know
Him. I am really excited to be part of a church body that values
people of all ages and is so devoted to teaching God’s word.
There are so many people whose hearts have yet to be won over
by the overwhelming love and grace of our Lord Jesus Christ.
May we be the bearers of His message to the lost and dying here
in Lexington and to the world. And may we be ever diligent in
that endeavor! I think C.S. Lewis said it well when he said,
“A church is the only organization that exists primarily for the
benefit of non-members.” – C. S. Lewis

15. I Pledge Allegiance
Give to the Lord, O heavenly beings
Give to the Lord glory and power
Give to the Lord the glory due His name
Bow down to the Lord in His holy grandeur
Psalm 29:1-2
Psalm 29 begins with a striking declaration, directed right at
the heavenly host. Every heavenly being is told to bow down and
give their strength and glory to the Lord. This act of worship is
not simply acknowledging God’s greatness and glory, but they are
told to lay down their personal strength and glory at the Lord’s
feet and surrender themselves to His reign. Worship is not simply
an act of acknowledgement, but we are laying ourselves down to
God.
The rest of the psalm describes
in vivid pictures how the Lord’s
power and majesty are seen in
the storm passing through. His
voice thunders through the wind,
lightning flashes, and He sits above
the stormy chaos. As the mighty
cedars of Lebanon sway and are
broken, and as the ground itself trembles at His voice, the Lord
sits above it all enthroned as the only mighty king of all.
Our students today are bombarded by people, organizations,
and even culture, each one of them looking for more and more
people to pledge allegiance to them and their values. Some of
them are clearly bad and hurtful, and others are not so clear.
Sports, technology, the arts, friends, school, even family clamor
for allegiance. And while all of these are worthwhile, there is only
one great and glorious God who is worthy of our worship and
allegiance.
So take some time to pray for our students today. Pray for them
to be given clarity from the Spirit in how to order their lives in
a world that increasingly wants to divide their lives and exploit
them. And this Sunday in worship, let’s lay down our strength
and glory to God alone.
Let’s lift Him up together! ~ Brad

16. Grant and Pam Bolt are Making A Difference
If your child is between the ages of 5 and 18 and
your family has been a part of the ministry at Tates
Creek Christian Church for several years there is a
good chance that you know who Grant and Pam Bolt
are. Together they have a contagious personality and
a love to serve the Lord, and when you have done life or mission
trips with the Bolts you know your life on earth has been blessed by
knowing them.
When Miss Judy Clark was the
preschool director, Pam worked tirelessly
in the Critterland area. Then, when
her daughter Lauren moved to the
Elementary area she knew it was time for
a change in scenery. She began working
with Tyler Johnson and then transitioned in ministry when my
family and I came in 2010. In Pam’s many roles she loves to make
people feel welcome to the church as a greeter, encourage children
and families through training with special needs children, and help
keep things stay organized in Uptown. In fact, Pam’s behind the
scenes stuff hasn’t stopped there. She has also served as a financial
organizer for the Liberian mission team. Pam also loves serving the
Lord with her ladies’ circle and in her full time role with Fayette
County Schools.
Grant, on the other hand, has served as a deacon and news
anchor host for Uptown’s series of WGOD News. However, in
the last couple years Grant has been really making a difference
for the children in the orphanage in Liberia. He traveled with the
construction team in 2012 and worked mostly on building the
playground. When the team returned to Liberia this year, Grant
was the co-leader of the team! Now he joins several others in a
new mission group called Psalm 82:3 Mission to financially and
spiritually support the orphanage. Grant carries his passion to love
others into his workplace where he served as General Manager for
Milwards Funeral Home, but will soon be co-owner in the Johnson
Funeral home in Georgetown.
Thanks for always being such an encouragement to me and so
many others at TCCC! Grant and Pam Bolt, YOU ARE MAKING
A DIFFERENCE!!!

17. Critterland News
We always begin Jesus in the Park by asking the
children what they did over the weekend, just to see
what sort of crazy answers we will get. We hear a lot
of “I went to Grandma’s”, or “I played with my sister/
brother”. I think our favorites recently have been “I
got to help mommy clean!” and “Crackers” (said with a very sure
nod of the head).
A main point in Critterland is that God is there to take care of
the children. Joshua 1:9, ‘God is with you wherever you go’, is a
memory verse that we have taught the children multiple times.
We always remind them that no matter what adventure they take,
God will be there.
Personal note: Thank you to all those who have continued to
pray for our son, Conner, in regards to his hearing. At his last test,
his results came back normal. This is a far cry from his severe loss
diagnosis at birth. We are so very blessed.

19. Ashleigh and Elisabeth (sisters) have
been attending Tates Creek since birth
with their parents David and Rebekah.
After attending a week of church camp
this summer, Elisabeth decided she
needed to have Jesus as her Savior. With
encouragement from her sister, parents,
and family, Ashleigh came to her decision
as well. They were baptized by their
grandfather at Ebenezer Church of Christ.
Even though they are young, each of them
have a favorite Bible verse. For Elisabeth
it is Psalm 107:1 and for Ashleigh it is
Ephesians 4:32.

in his apartment complex was always
talking about Jesus. Scott realized that he
wanted to seek God’s will for his life. The
first week attending Tates Creek he shared
“I really enjoyed the traditional service

about what the Bible says about baptism
and quickly decided that he needed to
be baptized. Please be sure to welcome
