The “SOUL” Purpose of the Church by Rev Les Peine
What is the primary purpose or focus of the church? Is it Fellowship with our fellow believers and friends
and family? Or is it Teaching – knowledge of the Scripture? Is it potluck dinners? Or is it entertainment? It
is just to make us feel good about ourselves? Is it to meet our own needs? Or is there a greater need that
we are called to meet? Is the church only for those whom we know and feel comfortable with? Or is it for
everyone?
This is what Peter said: Acts 2:21 (NRSV)
“Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
The “SOUL” purpose of the church is evangelism, redemption---LOVE!. To reach lost people. It is not a
hotel for the saints, it is a hospital for sinners.
If you watched the Royal Wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle you heard Episcopal Bishop Michael
Curry say:
“Someone once said that Jesus began the most revolutionary movement in human history. A movement grounded in the uncondi-
tional love of God for the world - and a movement mandating people to live that love, and in so doing to change not only their lives
but the very life of the world itself.
I'm talking about power. Real power. Power to change the world. If you don't believe me, well, there were some old slaves in
America's Antebellum South who explained the dynamic power of love and why it has the power to transform.
"They explained it this way. They sang a spiritual, even in the midst of their captivity. It's one that says 'There is a balm in Gilead...'
a healing balm, something that can make things right.
"'There is a balm in Gilead to MAKE THE WOUNDED WHOLE, there is a balm in Gilead to HEAL THE SIN-SICK SOUL.'
John 1:14 says “The Word (the living God) became flesh and dwelt among us (Jesus).”
We need to let people know:
FELLOWSHIP IS NOT THE FOCUS…
CHURCH IS NOT THE FOCUS…
THE PREACHER IS NOT THE FOCUS…
THE MUSIC IS NOT THE FOCUS…
THE FOCUS IS GOD’S LOVE!
THE FOCUS IS JESUS AND JESUS’ SACRIFICE FOR OUR SIN!
Romans 5:8 says “But God demonstrated his own love for us in this: While we were yet sinners
Christ died for us!”
1 John 4:10 says “This is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent his
Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.”

3. Thank you to our faithful Adult Choir and
Spirit Praise singers who provide music each
week during worship. We hope to see you all
back together in the fall.
During the summer months, beginning with
Memorial Day and ending with Labor Day, we
will have special music each week shared by
different individuals or groups. If you’d like
to sing or perhaps play an instrumental piece,
