(804) 282-4243 (office) On March 6, 2013, at a Special Called Business Meeting, the church voted to

and also approved a proposal to pay for the roof repair that was presented by the

The bid to perform the roof repair is $58,995.00. Once work begins, there may
Church Staff be additional costs associated with underlying damage that has occurred as a
result of the leaking roof. In coordination with the contractor, Moses Rivers will
Dr. William B. Hardison, Jr. monitor the work as it is performed and, to the extent possible, has promised that
Interim Pastor his firm, Rivers Construction, will perform any carpentry work that is needed for
the cost of the materials. In addition to the roofing contractor’s work, there will
Carol G. Turner be the need to perform plaster work inside the sanctuary and repairs to the mortar

contract.

that could become extremely costly. To put it simply, this work is important and

Church Office is open Monday - Friday To pay for this work, the church voted to approve a plan in which we are asking
9:00 am to 2:00 pm members and friends of the church to prayerfully consider the work that needs to
be done to repair the sanctuary roof and interior plaster and to make a special gift
(over and above contributions to current expenses) to the church by May 1, 2013.
The gift should be designated for roof repair.
As an alternative or in addition to a special gift, we are asking members and
friends to purchase a 5 year bond paying interest at 4% per annum. If you desire
to purchase a bond, please do so by May 1, 2013. Interest on the bond will be

Whatever Became of Pontius Pilate?
Little is known about the fate of Pontius Pilate, the Roman Prefect to Judea, who “ . . . found no guilt in
this man,” and washed his hands of the whole debacle, but ultimately contributed directly to Jesus’ death on
the cross. We know from Scripture that his wife, Claudia Procula , had a dream about Jesus the night before
the trial and warned her husband not to have anything to do with this man. We also know from Scripture that
Pilate had a headboard (a “titulus” in Latin) made and nailed to the cross. On it was written “Jesus of
Nazareth, King of the Jews.” Was this just a way of taunting the Jews or was this the dawning of faith in
Pilate himself?
Until the early 1960’s no physical evidence existed that a man by the name of Pontius Pilate ever
existed. Then a foundation stone was found at Caesarea Philippi with Pilate’s name inscribed upon it.
--In 35 A.D. Claudia Procula, Pilate’s wife who dreamed of Jesus as the King, returned to Rome and became a
baptized believer and leader in the church in Rome. She remained a believer and upon her death, the Christian
community honored her. Today she is regarded as a Saint by the Eastern Orthodox Church. Her feast day
occurs every October 27.
--Writing in 41 A.D. the early Christian historian, Eusebius, compiled the following account. He writes that in
36 A.D. Pilate was stripped of his authority by his superior, Vitellius, because of a barbaric overreaction to a
Jewish insurrection. He was sent to Rome to stand trial himself before the emperor. This was six years after
the crucifixion of Jesus. As fate would have it, the emperor died while the ship carrying Pilate was in passage
to the Imperial City, so, the trial never occurred. Pilate was eventually released, but afterward committed
suicide in 38 A.D. and is now buried in a cave just outside of Laussane, France.
How to Inspire a Teenager
With Mother’s Day and Father’s Day around the corner out thoughts turn to the task of Christian
parenting. A very influential school in Bath Maine is setting the boundaries for a 21 st century paradigm for
parenting.
In 1966 Joseph Gauld founded the famous Hyde School in Bath, Maine. While most educational
systems help teenagers to change their behavior and adjust their attitudes, Hyde School believes that the way
to change a teenager’s behavior is for the parent to learn to change their behavior. Here is a quote from Dr.
Gauld. Do you agree?
“Regardless of what they might say or do, children and teens share a deep yearning to be inspired by
their parents. Ironically, we will not inspire our children with our achievements. We best inspire them when
we share our struggles, reach for our best, and model daily character.”
“And remember,” he said: “Character is inspired not inherited.”

Knitting a Fellowship
For the past 3 months members of our congregation have been meeting and making prayer shawls for our
homebound members. As we knit, crochet and quilt, prayers are lifted up for these very special people. A special
thank you to Linda Eades, Alice Shepperson, Gloria Story, Barbara Richards, Monica White, Erica Pfaff, and Hoy
Woodburn for making our first “batch”. We have a very simple pattern and it’s perfect for learning to knit. Join us
the first Monday of each month in the parlor as we “knit our fellowship”. We will again in May.
Our Father, Who Art in Heaven
Thus starts this most beloved and holy prayer. Last fall, many of our children participated in a retreat to study the
meaning of the Lord's Prayer, and what it means for their lives. During the morning worship service on Sunday,
April 14th, we will recognize all children who have learned and recited the prayer to their Sunday School teacher.
Please join us to celebrate with them.
