What does a production company do?Production companies produce films and other forms of media. They are usually responsible for raising the funds needed to do this- usually through forms of advertising. The company get money for selling the film to television channels and cinemas allowing them to raise money through the viewing of the film.
The Production CompanyAs our film is based on ‘The Strangers’, we have chosen the sameproduction company that produced this film in 2008. The film wasproduced by ROGUE PICTURES. We also chose this productioncompany as when we were researching different productioncompanies, we discovered that they invested in “high-qualitysuspense, action, thriller and urban features with mainstreamappeal”. Therefore as our film is a thriller we thought that thiswould be a successful company to work with.
What does a distributor do?The distributor is responsible for getting theatres to buy the film. They usually do this by having a private viewing for investors. They then have to negotiate prices and terms of the lease agreement – it is leased for a limited amount of time. They are often also responsible for marketing the film. They are also responsible for releasing the film onto DVD and to the public.
The Distribution CompanyWe chose Universal Pictures to be our distribution company asthis is the co-producer/distributor for ‘The Strangers’ which ourfilm was based on. Therefore we thought that it would be likely that theywould be willing to distribute our film because it is similar to theirprevious work. They produce/distribute a lot of other thrillers such asState of Play (2009) and The Fourth Kind (2010) which would make it anideal distributor of the film as these films would appeal to the same sortof target audience etc. Therefore they are likely to be interested in ou
