Participatory media allows audiences to interact with and discuss the media they consume through various social media platforms. Audiences share their views on TV shows, movies, music and more on sites like Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr. These discussions help audiences connect with others who have similar interests and debate different perspectives. Reality TV shows like I'm A Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here! actively encourage audience participation through voting and sharing opinions on social media, which boosts viewer engagement with the shows. Fan culture is also a form of participatory media, where fans take an active role in the media they enjoy through writing fan fiction, attending fan conventions, and purchasing merchandise bearing logos and characters from their favorite movies, books and other

2. PARTICIPATORY
Participatory media is a way audiences interact with the media they are interested in and consuming. The audience is inspired to
talk about their feelings and views on the media they are into such as TV, radio, news articles, movies and bands and so on. A way
they can do this is by using social media platforms such as Facebook, twitter and the main one Tumblr. They sites are popular when
sharing your opinion as they can create Facebook pages to allow people to have discussing on the topic and relate to each other
and challenge one another's views. Twitter is a good place to be able to talk about the program while it is happening and be able to
find other people using hashtags to talk with. Other types of media that participatory includes are, blogs, wikis, podcasts and video
blogs such as YouTube. People can create YouTube channels dedicated to a certain type of media where they create their own
audience to talk about the media, and these video have comment sections allowing other people to comment their reasons and
views this allows links with podcasts as this type of media is made for chatting. It is now a lot easier for the public to get involved
and participate in the media since social media has been invented as lots of people can share the same platforms and debate of
different topics and share their voice.
Lots of TV shows use voting as a way to get the public to participate In their show and these shows would not work
without them for example I’m a celebrity get me out of here in a show based on the public opinions and decisions. It is a
reality TV show that the public have full control on who does challenges and who leaves therefore without the public
voting the show wouldn't’t be able to happen. This is a really good way to make the show more enjoyable as the public
feels like its their TV show two as they are making the choices so it is more likely they will watch and get involved with the
show. I’m a celebrity get me out of here also has a extra part of the show after the main part that they involve the
audience with a lot more by reading out their questions for the stars via twitter using the #imaceleb encouraging the
audience to tweet them, this will also help boost the shows advertising as lots of people will be tweeting about it and it
could become trending.
The show also includes cultural competence as there have lot of different terms in the show that only the people watching
will understand, such as dingo dollars, bushtukker trial, stars, cyclone and more. People outside the show will not know
what this terms mean unless you watch it then gradually you will learn more cultural competence about the show.
There is not much fan culture to this show as its not a shows that’s on all the time only once a year therefore people are
only interested for that one month rather than all year therefore merchandise is not sold and people stop talking about it
because they forgot out till the next year.
3. CULTURAL COMPETENCE
Cultural Competence is the way the audience understands the media and how they interpret it. There is a basic level of
understanding such as being able to read the language that the text is written in. There is more meaning when
interpreting sign’s and symbols at a deeper level such as have an understanding of something just from signs and not
just writing. Audiences can find it hard to understand signs from other cultures as we don’t know what they mean
because we cannot understand the language but its very easier to understand our own signs. We can create our own
meaning to our own signs and symbols for example football.
Leeds united is a Football team/club based in Leeds and has a big audience for it. People who are outside this
audience and do not know much about football will not be able to understanding the meaning or their signs,
logo’s and writing because they do not take interest in the team therefore this audience have their own cultural
competence as the people in this audience are the only people that understand the rules, games, players,
language and how it all works. For example football has lots of terms and vocabulary that only their audience
would know because they watch and take interest in the game and the more you watch the games and play along
you learn more about this words and rules and gain more cultural competence.
There is also participatory in these games as recently Leeds released a new badge for their team and this did not
go well for their fans. People started to create petitions to stop the new badge being made and because of these
fans were able to participate in this and share their opinion of the badge and as a results of this the badge was not
changed and they are bringing out more designs for the fan to decide from. Leeds wouldn't not of known how
the bad the badge was unless they let the audience speak about heir opinions and therefore they now have a
better badge.
There is also a big fan culture involved, fan culture is a culture produced by fans. Leeds fan culture includes
meeting up before the game to get drinks to discuss their predictions, all the fans wear the football tops to
4. FAN CULTURE
Fan culture is the culture produced by fans and the fans take an active roles in the media they enjoy or existing products.
Fan fiction is fan labour regarding stories about the characters or settings written by fans of the original work. There are
lots of fan groups out there but the most popular fan communities are based around science fictions, comic books,
manga, Aimee, video games and movies. Fans will write about these movies, books and drawings alternative chapters
and endings to how they want them to end this is called Fan Fiction. A popular website for this is Tumblr where fans can
upload pictures and stories about there favourite films and book and other people in the same communities can
comment on them and favourite them.
An example of fan fiction is 50 shades of grey, a film based off a fan fiction “twilight”. The author E.L starting posting
erotic novels on the twilight series on a website called “fanfiction.net” and eventually made her own website called
“50shades.com” where she wrote the noel and a week later sold 30’000 e-book downloads.
There is another side of fan fiction where events will take place rather than just speaking online. There is a very popular
event called Comic Con, comic con is a place where fans can go a show appreciation for, comics and related popular art
forms, primarily through the presentation of conventions and events that celebrate the historic and ongoing contribution
of comics to art and culture. Fans of movies such as marvel and DC will dress up as their favourite super hero's and can
meet other people who enjoy the books and films and discuss them, also actors will go to comic con and sigh autographs
for the fans allowing them to meet their favorite stars.
Fan culture can also include merchandise for a certain films or books where fan can wear their logo or face anywhere they
go.
An example of this is Star wars; a very big series of movies and has millions or fans. Shops all over the world including,
HMV, Primark, H&M, Give a dog a bone, Retro shops, Amazon and many more all sell products that have stars war logo
on them or the characters. Other merchandise include, mugs, t-shirts, key rings, headphones, gadgets and stickers.
Merchandise will also be sold at events such as comic con for fans to purchase.
There are websites design for fan communities such as Red Bubble where they allow people to design their own clothing
by placing their own design on to t-shirt, mugs and lots of different items. Lots of fan will make new designs of their
favourite show and sell them to the community of fans. This website allows fans to have a role in the movie or book by
