Old Dominion Line Essay
Old Dominion Freight Line
The company I have chosen is Old Dominion Freight Line. They are a common carrier of goods.
Old Dominion Fright Line has a lot of new technology to help their customers ship their goods
which would help them to be a higher degree company of caring for the goods they ship. Some of
the technology they have is for their drivers which has on board camera to record them when they
are speeding or even if the truck starts swerving on the road the camera would automatically cut on
and start filming. Old Dominion Fright Line also has a Dock Yard Management System (DYM)
that would help the company keep up with the information of the shipment (http://www.odfl.com
/Landings/technologyLanding.faces 3 12 17). It also helps the consignor and consignee keep up
with their shipment also and letting them know when the goods will be delivered.
Some of the information I researched on Old Dominion Fright Line is that in 2015 their annual
revenue was 2.97 billion which was up from 2014 by 6.6 percent. That tells me that they are a well
oiled company and very efficient with their shipping technique. They shipped 10,129 (in thousands)
in 2015 (http://www.odfl.com/Home/3 12 17).

Questions and Answers on the Fast Food Industry and The...
Question One. Jollibee is considered to be one of the largest fast food chains in the Philippines.
The company operates a network of 750 stores nationwide. As a leader in the Philippines the
company has been able to expand internationally and currently is in pursuit of completing a plan
that can make them a global brand. The company is such a royal success in the Asian Pacific
coast that its expansion is sure to be a living success here in the US. Tony Tan is the founder of
Jollibee, which started out as an Ice Cream Parlor back in 1975. The company thrives on a
family oriented type of approach; this is one that has made them a very admirable employer in
many countries. The tasty menu options are also a huge factor in Jollibee s continued success.
The Values of the company are; customer focus, excellence, respect for the individual,
teamwork, spirit of family and fun, humility to listen and learn, honesty and integrity, and
frugality. The mission of the company is simply to serve great tasting food and to bring joy to
eating to everyone. A long list of milestones within the company s history is also mark the
company with excellence. Jollibee expanded to California, USA in 1999, and has since been
struggling to stay afloat. The famous pineapple topped burger seemed to be a sure hit over in its
home of the Philippines. There are currently eight stores in California and the projections are 30%
below the expected projection rates. Jollibee seems to have

Non Fiscal Barriers And The Free Movement Of The European...
This question concerns non fiscal barriers to the free movement of goods in the European Union.
Issues concerning Articles 34,35 or 36 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union
(TFEU) are raised and Brian s potential claim is against France as the Member State who has
enacted measures which may restrict imports and exports, thereby violating the Treaty. Firstly,
considering the licence required by French legislation to importPS s, this could amount to a selling
arrangement which is defined in the case of Keck as rules that concern who sells the product
and when, where and how they go about it. Those selling arrangements which apply equally in
law and fact will not invoke Article 34 TFEU. As the product, the PS, in not directly affected, the
requirement of a licence may be a selling arrangement . However the selling arrangement does
not apply equally in law and fact because there is no licence requirement mentioned for domestic
producers of PSs . As the licence discriminates against imports, this may invoke Article 34 and it
is likely to be a measure equivalent to a quantitative restriction (MEQR). MEQRs were defined in
Dessonville as All trading rules capable of hindering, directly or indirectly, actually or potentially,
intra Community trade . In other words, an MEQR applies only to imports and not to everyone. As
the licence is an additional requirement for imported PSs, and applications are only considered
once a year in August, it makes imports more

The True Heroes Of World War II
Scientists of the Manhattan Project: The True Heroes of World War II
The morning of August 15, 1945, Americans rejoiced as World War II came to an end after Japan
had been bombed twice by atomic bombs which completely decimated the cities of Hiroshima and
Nagasaki. Most people know this would be the only nuclear attack ever made in history, but what
people do not know would be who created these nuclear weapons, and how they created them. The
Manhattan Project, created by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, included the most brilliant scientists
of all time. The President created this project because he obtained information that Germany could
possibly create a nuclear weapon. Essentially, this project began working on the idea because the ...

Without this team, America would not have survived if the Germans ever actually created the
atomic bomb, and Roosevelt knew that. The President created this team because of an issue that
had been brought up to him one month before. Albert Einstein (a future scientist to work on the
Manhattan Project) sent a letter explaining that German scientists had discovered something
unimaginable. It stated:
In the course of the last four months it has been made probable through the work of Joliot in
France as well as Fermi and Szilard in America that it may become possible to set up a nuclear
chain reaction in a large mass of Uranium, by which vast amounts of power and large quantities of
new radium like elements would be generated. Now it appears almost certain that this could be
achieved in the immediate future. (Einstein)
Albert Einstein knew that this could be possible and knew that German scientists had started on
experimenting with the newly found chain reaction in Uranium ore. This shows that Einstein knew
of the dangers of nuclear weapons in the near future and he openly wanted to help the United States
succeed in liberation of the Nazi troops in Europe. Einstein highly recommended Roosevelt to speed
up the experimentation of nuclear. This proves that without the knowledge of Einstein, Germany
would surpass the United States in technological warfare. Roosevelt did not want to fall behind
Germany and be

Dennis Rader Case Summary
In this case analysis, the BTK killer also known as Dennis Rader was convicted with 10 counts of
first degree murder in Wichita, Kansas. He committed those crimes between 1974 and 1991. The
acronym BTK stands for blind, torture, and kill. Soon after each incident, he sent anonymous letters
to the police and taunting them by offering knowledge of the killings. Dennis Raderwas reported to
have tortured a Puerto Rican family, the Oteros in their home (Vigliotti, 2015). In court, he testified
that from the torture, he took one of the daughters, Josephine Otero to the basement and tortured
her while ejaculating on her. He also testified having sexual please while torturing the rest of the
family. In addition, he admitted to have tortured... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
On December 8, 1977, he murdered Nancy Fox, a jewelry store worker inside her home as he
followed her to her house and cutting her phone line before he broke into her house (Vigliotti,
2015). He parked his car a few blocks away and confirmed she wasn t home. Nancy Fox
confronted Dennis Rader and remained remarkably calm when she saw him and let him touch her.
He threw her in bed and strangled her. After that he let the police know about her murderby calling
them and misspelled the word homicide with home a side along with her address and name. He
was also known to be a mentally deficient person. He had a very low IQ and failed all his classes
in high school (Vigliotti, 2015). Ironically speaking, Dennis Rader besides of being a serial
killer, was the President of the congregation at his Lutheran Church. He sent a floppy disk to his
pastor, Michael Clark who later inserted it into his computer and showed a lot of evidence
recorded that Dennis Rader was indeed the BTK killer that was behind those murders. The pastor
was then stunned and told the rest of the congregation of Dennis Rader. Mr. Rader also sent another
disk to the police giving them hints about the murder (Vigliotti,

Factors Affecting The Biodiversity Of The Lake
Many lakes across the globe are home to a wide variety of organisms, which are supported by
both the lakes themselves and by the abundance of varying habitats surrounding them. Lake
Naivasha (0В°45 N, 36В°20 E) is one such lake: Situated within the rift valley, Lake Naivasha is
a freshwater home to an abundance of both native and alien flora and fauna, both aquatic and
terrestrial (Otiang a Owiti Oswe, 2007). The lake has 3 main surface inflows; from the Malewa,
Gilgil and Karati rivers, but is an endorheic lake (Otiang a Owiti Oswe, 2007); so is a closed
hydrological system on the surface (Figure 1). Nevertheless, it is thought that water from the lake
does move southward underground, through volcanic rocks (Clarke et al., 1990, Ojiambo et al.,
2001). There are various factors that contribute to the biodiversity of the lake; however one the
most predominant factors is the impact that the steep increase in Naivasha s population has had
on the lake. 70% of Kenya s horticultural output is produced in the Lake Naivasha area (Otiang a
Owiti Oswe, 2007), which makes it an area of extreme national economic importance. Due to this
thriving industry, the lake s population has risen from an estimated 7,000 in the 1969, to
approximately 300,000 in 2007 (Ouma Oloo, 2007). This rapid population growth has had effects
on many components of the ecosystem, including changes in lake levels and water composition,
loss of habitats, introduction of alien species and decline in many species

A Blended Future Of Technology
Geoffrey Tibbs
Dr. Dimock
EN 140 07
12 February 2016
A Blended Future Technology in education is not a new concept, especially at the college level.
Universities are encouraged to offer online courses, or as freelance journalist Chrissie Long and
many other experts call them, MOOCs (massive online open courses), to reach out to more students
and provide them with a more convenient style of learning (455). While MOOCs certainly have
their strengths, how far should universities go? What is the future of online education? Should
colleges of the future only offer online courses, or should face to face classes still be the primary
form of education? Blended courses, though not without faults of their own, can combine the best
elements of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Because the lectures are outside of class, there is more time for discussion and clarification. The
lectures in strictly face to face courses are presented in class, so there is not usually enough time
for in depth discussions. MOOCs are entirely online, so there is no meeting for discussion.
Blended courses do meet and have time for discussions, but there are some drawbacks as well. For
example, if a student has a question that he or she cannot find the answer to, the student will have
to wait until the next in class meeting or email the professor to get the answer. In face to face
classes, the student could ask the professor immediately, but a student in a blended course would
still be able to eventually ask the professor in person, which is an advantage over a MOOC. Even
though face to face classes have more access to professors, and MOOCs do not require the
student to come to campus, blended courses remain beneficial to students because they provide
more time for discussions and clarification than other types of classes. Aside from more in class
discussion, blended courses also allow students to set their own paces. In an article for U.S. News
World Report, author Jordan Friedman mentioned a 2011 Kaplan Inc. research review that said
blended learning programs can potentially offer more personalized, student focused and flexible

BadgerCare is a health care cost reimbursement program that was created by Wisconsin Governor
Tommy Thompson. It went into effect in Wisconsin on July 1,1999, and was created to provide
health care coverage to Wisconsinites whose employers do not provide health care and for
people who make too much money to be covered by Medicaid. BadgerCare began with a small
group of about 3,400 adolescents who were enrolled in the spring of 1999, under new Medicaid
rules that allowed the coverage of children born after September 1983 with a family income of no
more than 100 percent of the federal poverty level. By November of 2000, enrollment in
BadgerCare, including additional Medicaid children, had increased to 51,172. No adults were

The Winding Stair And Other Poems
As Professor Pethica points out, the volume The Winding Stair and Other Poems is
extraordinary because its textual history is particularly elaborate, even by Yeats s standards.
Although I would love to explore the relationship between different editions, as we did when we
talked about different editions of Wilde Swans at Coole, the task is too huge to be tackled
sufficiently in this paper. In order to preclude any ambiguity, I would like to clarify that whenever
I use the title The Winding Stair and Other Poems in this paper, unless otherwise specified, I am
referring to the last edition published in 1933. Since the early stage of Yeats s career, the poet has
been concerned with mortality. The poet seems to suggest that art is the... Show more content on

Losing all touch with the finer consciousness of the age it would be, not only irresponsible, but
anemic (Foster, 441). In the poem Three movements, the poet observes that Shakespearean fish
swam the sea, far away from land; / Romantic fish swam in nets coming to the hand; / What are
all those fish that lie gasping on the strand? (Finneran, 240) Yeats is neither detached
Shakespearean fish, nor credulous Romantic fish; he is the fish that lie gasping on the strand, and
the volume The Winding Stair and Other Poems is his struggle with the crisis of his age, both the
age of the poet (nearly 70 at the time) and the age of the world (1930s). We have talked a lot about
Yeats s dialectical effort to transcend mortality and achieve immortality in his poetry. Such effort to
transcend mortality presupposes the dichotomy between life and death. Indeed, in previous volumes,
may concepts are contingent upon a symmetrically opposing idea: the symbol of the Mask
presupposes the dichotomy between self and anti self, and many of Yeats s poems feature the
dichotomy between female and male. However, in the volume The Winding Stair and Other Poems,
Yeats points out a simple yet fundamental fact, that these dichotomies are all human constructs. In
the poem Vacillation, the speaker solemnly observes that Between extremities / Man runs his course
(Finneran, 250). The most important dichotomy that Yeats inspects in this volume is the one
between life and death. The poet points

The Historical Prevalence Of Bisexuality Essay
The historical prevalence of bisexuality is hard to determine because same sex sexual activity has
traditionally been very stigmatized; furthermore bisexuality is often ignored in historical
discussions of sexual orientation. Nonetheless, over the past few decades, the status quo with
regard to same sex sexual activity has changed drastically. The repeal of anti gay laws and the 2003
supreme court decision Lawrence v. Texas which eliminated all remaining sodomy laws in the
United States, the removal of homosexualityfrom its designation as a sexual disorder in the DSM,
the existence of high profile LGBTQ figures, and the push for, and legalization of gay marriage in
the United States and other western countries have all been significant contributing factors toward
the normalization of same sex sexual activity. The general public has experienced increased
exposure to the LGBTQ community, and as a result, acceptance of sexual minorities, including
bisexual individuals, has grown.
In spite of the progress toward acceptance of bisexual individuals, many people still view sexual
orientation as dichotomous, which contributes to the erasure and/or invisibility of the bisexual
community (Alarie Gaudet 2013). Some also perceive bisexuality as a transitional identity between
heterosexuality and homosexuality, or believe that people who identify as bisexual are just too
afraid to come out as homosexual (Israel and Mohr 2003; Alarie Gaudet 2013). Some studies have

Meeting A Deadline Research Paper
Everything has a time limit the point where when you meet that end and all you can do is look
back, this is a deadline. When you should go to sleep, when favorite restaurant closes and where
on time meets too late. Not all deadlines are forced yet most are never really by choice. The
purpose they serve is important part of life in which the world moves forward and when work
has to be done. It keeps the perspective of time management into focus and what I have to work
with. Every day that starts with a plan has deadlines I plan to meet. I get dressed before five
thirty. I try to sleep no more than nine hours to prevent oversleeping fatigue. I keep conversations

The Main Features of Weimar Germanys Golden Years Between 1925 1929
There where many events between the years of 1925 1929 in Weimar Germany that were seen as
golden years. The diplomatic skills of Gustav Stresemann, the foreign minister allowed Germany to
excel in foreign affairs. Politically Stresemann wanted to improve relations between Germany and
the rest of Europe and also the USA. In 1925 the Locarno Treaty took place and Germany accepted
the borders with France and Belgium that were agreed in the Treaty of Versailles. Germany accepted
that the Rhineland would remain a demilitarised zone. Also France and Germany agreed to settle
any disputes. This meant that they would respect the German ... Show more content on

With this it enabled Germany to raise matters of German interest. The introduction of Germany to
the league of nations was definitely a major feature in the golden years between 1925 1929
because talking with the likes of Britain and France in the League of nations assembly was a huge
step for Germany s ranking with the rest of the world.
It was not only politically that the years between 1925 1929 were called golden years. Culturally
the Weimar experienced some high points between these years. In the years between 1924 and
1929 there was certainly a great array of talent in the Weimar. There was a great increase in
literature, drama, art, music, and architecture. The increase in all of these made the entertainment
and leisure in Germany higher than it had ever been before. With this increase it gave the people
of Germany a great deal of pride because they were challenging Paris as the cultural centre of
Europe. Also the increase in Weimar culture boosted the morale of the country. This was because
the culture helped the German people to take their minds off the past years and enjoy themselves, it
especially helped them forget about the war that had occurred only a few years before. The culture
in Weimar was definitely a main feature when talking about the golden years that had occurred
between 1925 1929. Without the increase in culture

framework provided for clarity?
The framework presented does not explain the relationship among the independent variables
themselves. It explains more about each variable specifically with no explanations about how each
independent variable relate to the other. However, the relationship between the dependent and the
independent variables is partially explained in the framework. The framework flow chart is not

The Paralysis of Prufrock in The Love Song of J. Alfred...
Paralysis, the incapability to act, has been a key element of many famous literary characters.
Shakespeare s Hamlet is the paragon of paralysis, unable to sort through his thoughts, Hamlet
only makes one decisive action, at the end of the play. T.S Elliot s transfers Hamlets paralysis in
his poem The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock. The name Elliot chose for this indecisive, timid
man epitomizes his character as well as his flaws. J. Alfred Prufrock needs this ranting monologue
in order for him to understand the severity of his paralysis and fear of women and society. Elliot s

In the next stanza, Prufrock tells himself repeatedly that indeed there will be time. This repetition
is used in order to display Prufrock re assuring himself that he does not need to meet the women in
the room just yet, there will be time for himself and the woman he loves to meet and talk. Prufrock
believes that there is enough time for his hundred of indecisions and revisions before the taking of
a toast and tea.
Not only does Prufrock seem to be afraid of confronting woman talking of Michelangelo, he
seems intimidated by the social settings he must engage in. There will be time, there will be
time, To prepare a face to meet the faces that you meet, There will be time to murder and create,
And time for all the works and days of hands That lift and drop a question on your plate (26 29)
Prufrock s social anxiety results in his worrying how others see him. He thinks about women s
arms and perfume, but does not know how to act. He admits he is ultimately afraid (line 86) of
engaging in social activities. Elliot reveals the height of Prufrock s paralysis by scrutinizing the
absurdity of Prufrock s concerns: Should I, after tea and cakes and ices, / Have the strength to
force the moment to its crisis? In the next few stanzas, Prufrock describes himself balding, middle
aged, and plain in order to draw in the reader to the point of view of the society. As detailed as

Medieval Japan has gone through many hardships, but the everlasting bonds held Japan together
during these times. The three bonds that held Japan together were religion, traditions and the

The three major religions during the 16th century in Japan were Zen Buddhism, Shinto, and
Christianity. An epidemic ravaged the land and was interpreted as bringing the wrath of the kami
down on the nation. This epidemic had led to objects being thrown into the canals and temples
being destroyed. Shinto s religion had taught people that kami, who were the gods and spirits were
present everywhere. Zen Buddhism taught people the way to inner peace was through meditation
and self control. This religion was adopted by the samurai warriors. Christianity started to disappear

What Is Dewey And Vygotsky s Model Of Cognitive Development
Dewey (1959) sees experience and education as being dialectically connected. Hence, to Dewey, the
experiences that the teacher designs and creates in the classroom, e.g. tools, activities or the
environment, have an impact on students learning. The experiences must be relevant, authentic and
meaningful to the students for effective learningto take place. Besides individuals experiences,
Dewey gives space for social experiences as well. He believes that students interactions with others
and the environment are crucial factors contributing to their learning. Dewey s belief is further
extended by Vygotsky s (1978) model of Zone of Proximal Development(ZPD). Vygotsky believed
that collaboration with others helps one to complete tasks that one could not have done without
assistance from and collaboration with others. The ZDP is the level at which learning takes place. It

Hypnotism Is It Magic Or Reality Essay
Hypnotism: Is it Magic or Reality
Most people know what it is. It has been seen on television and in movies, and the saying,
quot; You are getting very sleepy quot; has become a widely used phrase. Hypnosis has almost
always been thought of as a magic trick, but recent studies show that it is becoming more popular
in medicine and everyday life.
Hypnosis is defined as a state of mind where the body is more reactive to suggestions than in
normal conditions. When under hypnosis, one narrows his or her attention to one subject or object.
Everyone in the world has experienced hypnosis many times. Some examples are daydreaming and
not realizing other events happening, being engrossed in a book or a movie, or ... Show more

When in a light trance, it is feasible that a patient may not believe he or she was hypnotized. But
under deeper trances, more effects are felt such as feeling mellow and light, or feeling very heavy
(Hunter 3).
The three methods of producing hypnosis are autohypnosis, heterohypnosis, and self hypnosis.
Autohypnosis occurs when the mind concentrates on something such as a television program or a
good book and causes a sense of extreme focus. When hypnosis is induced by another person, it is
called heterohypnosis. Heterohypnosis is produced by a hypnotist, usually a professional or
someone sufficiently trained, who puts someone into a hypnotic trance using either words,
movements, or touch. The last method is self hypnosis, which is defined as the process of inducing
hypnosis by oneself (Phelps 12 13).
Even though there are three different defined ways of producing hypnosis, many experts have
come to the conclusion that all hypnosis is self hypnosis. A hypnotist helps to guide and develop
the hypnotic trance, but the person being hypnotized is initially in control (Alman 8). As Karen
Olness, M.D. from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio explains, quot; All
hypnosis is self hypnosis. We all tune things in and out all day long. For example, I can focus on
the conversation we amp;#8217;re having and choose not to notice that I have a slight pain in my
right shoulder. I can

Agriculture Interview
What do you think about when someone says Agriculture ? I think about all the hard working men
and women who have jobs associated with agriculture. For example, veterinarians, agronomists,
wildlife inspectors, and even my ag teacher. Today, I have interviewed my cousin, Sarah Marx, to
help build interest for myself as well as others in agriculture. Sarah grew up in Beemer, Nebraska.
So, agriculture has been an interest of her s her entire life. Sarah was apart of the Beemer Dreemers

Crown Lengthening Research Paper
What is Crown Lengthening
Crown lengthening is a common oral surgery performed by a periodontist. The procedure involves
the removal of gum tissue, bone, or both to expose more of the patient s teeth. Reasons for Crown
Lengthening
Crown lengthening may be done to restore damaged teeth, insert a dental crown, or for cosmetic
reasons. Teeth that are severely damaged due to tooth decay, trauma or periodontal disease may
need to undergo crown lengthening if the tooth is broken under the gum or there is not enough
tooth surface to properly restore the tooth.
Dental crowns are used to cover, protect, and strengthen damaged teeth. If the crown does not fit
properly it can irritate the gums and cause chronic inflammation. Crown lengthening creates ...

Afterward an appointment will be scheduled. If your tooth requires a crown a temporary one will
be put in place before the surgery. This allows the periodontist to see how much tissue will need to
be removed before the permanent crown is put in place.
Crown lengthening is a common procedure and can be performed in our office under general
anesthesia or sedation. The length of the surgery depends on how many teeth are involved and if
soft tissue and/or bone has to be removed. The periodontist will make small cuts in the gums to
expose the roots of the tooth. Then the necessary amount of gum and/or bone will be removed.
Once the periodontist is satisfied, the area will be rinsed with a saltwater solution and the gums
will be stitched in place. If you had a temporary crown it will be put back in place once the surgery

A Tale of Two Cities, A Doll s House, Brave New World
J.M. Barrie once wrote, You can have anything in life if you will sacrifice everything else for it.
Throughout this semester, the most prevalent subject that has continuously risen from
conversation is that of sacrifice. Through the three books read in class, A Tale of Two Cities, A
Doll s House, and Brave New World, one can learn that sacrifice is not a selfless thing, but a
necessary part of life when attaining something he or she feels is of greater value. In A Tale of Two
Cities, written by Charles Dickens, Sydney Carton is introduced as a lethargic alcoholic that has
little interest in living. As the story progresses, however, Dickens shows Sydney s interest in
another character named Lucie. Later, Sydney even announces his love to her before she weds
another man, Charles Darnay, yet he still continues to speak of the worthlessness of his life as
the story continues. It becomes very obvious to the reader that Lucie is the focal point of
Sydney s life, and that he lives primarily in the light of her happiness. Towards the end of the
novel, Darnay is in prison and soon facing the guillotine. Sydney, who looks stunningly similar to
Darnay, takes his place and dies to ensure Lucie s happiness with Darnay in their future. From the
time he announced his love to Lucie until his death, Sydney showed his passionate interest and
care for Lucie while showing apathy for his own life. It is clear that Sydney valued Lucie and her
happiness more than his own life. Therefore, by

Physics Of Hot Air Balloon Experiment
Physics
The following report explains the results of a model hot air balloon experiment that replicates a
previous incident in which the temperature in the envelope was heated to a point until it was
burned. After assessing the researched and calculated data, the assertion of the air in the balloon
becoming too hot to lift the mass will be validated.
The physics related to the operation of hot air balloons is essentially the use of hot air to create a
buoyant force and generate lift. A hot air balloon is made of a large bag called the envelope, a
wicker basket or gondola hung underneath and a burner located beneath the hole in the envelope to
heat the air in the envelope. This heated air causes a buoyant force to occur (Edmonds, 2008).
When an object is submerged in a fluid, it appears to weigh less than when it is outside of the
fluid. The weight of the mass acts downwards, but when it is immersed in fluid, an upthrust or
buoyant force is exerted by the fluid upwards (Edmonds, 2008). The buoyant force occurs because
the pressure in a liquid or gas increases with increasing depth. Therefore, the pressure at the lower
surface of a submerged object is greater than the pressure at its upper surface.
Diagram 1 shows an object that has the same density as water. It is found that the object is in static
equilibrium, tending neither to rise nor sink (Nave, 2014). For this to happen, the downward
gravitational force must be balanced by a net upward force from the surrounding

How Doyle Create Suspense In The Hound Of The Baskervilles
Fabricated from the essence of his thoughts, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle revolutionized the mystery
genre, as we know it, in his stunning novel, The Hound of the Baskervilles. When read, Doyle s
readers embark on a journey to the filthy, crime filled streets of Victorian London and the
mysterious moor of the Baskervilles where unknown entities lurk. But most of all, readers come
face to face with the man himself, the greatest detective of all time, Mr. Sherlock Holmes. Since it
first came out, Sir Arthur Conan Doyles world renown mystery, The Hound of the Baskervilles, has
not failed to delight mystery readers. In fact, readers have enjoyed the novel so much that it has

As an author, it is typically harder to create suspense, but Doyle does an excellent job. With the
use of red herrings, superstition, cliffhangers, and more, Doyle creates an atmosphere of tension
and suspense. An example of one of these techniques is seen through the red herring: Selden. As
soon as the word got out that Selden had broken out of jail, he was easily taken as a suspect to
readers. However, In the movie, Selden causes more suspense by breaking into Baskerville Hall
to get some food. Another example of Doyle creating suspense in the novel was through the
cliffhanger: the man on the tor. Doyle creates suspense through this by leaving the readers
wondering who was it that Watson saw on the tor. Although Doyle creates suspense pretty well,
Attwood creates even more. One major asset that Attwood has is sound effects and noise. This is
extremely efficient because Attwood can make the things that Doyle does even better. For
example, when the scene about Selden escaping happens, sound effects such as sirens and yelling,
make his escape more suspenseful. In the same way, Attwood uses sound effects for things such as
the howling of the hound on the moor, or the screaming of victims. Although Attwood creates a lot
of suspense through sound effects, I m sure that both Doyle and Attwood would agree that maybe
the most effective way of creating suspense is through character actions and nature. In both the
movie and the novel, in the resolution, a wave of fog appears before the hound arrives. In the
novel, Holmes even says, the one thing upon earth which could have disarranged my plans.... Our
success and even his life may depend upon his coming out before the fog is over the path. (218) In
this moment, the readers wait for the beast to strike as Doyle takes away their breath. This clearly
creates suspension and tension in both

The Importance Of Capital Punishment
Capital Punishment
Capital punishment is a death penalty form of punishment legally practiced by certain nations on
people who commit capital crimes. Capital offenses include crimes against humanity, treason, war,
murder, genocide, and espionage. Other crimes of this sort include rape, kidnapping, arson, robbery,
theft, and burglary (Pojman Vaughn, 2009). During capital punishment, the death sentence put on
the individual is followed by an execution. In the contemporary world, various countries are actively
practicing this form of punishment despite the fact that most countries withdrew from the
appointed practice. Many states enacted laws and policies that prohibit death as a remedy for
various crimes. Other countries basically stopped practicing the mentioned form of punishment by
making the occurrence insignificant.
Advocacy for Capital Punishment
Death penalty is morally permissible (Pojman Vaughn, 2009). Retribution has been the analogy
according to most scholars and law philosophers across the word. In this case, the need for
vengeance and vigilante justice takes the first priority. The argument is that any crimeperformed by
an individual in the society requires the same magnitude of punishment. It is clear that it is against
human principles to kill while seeking justice. Nevertheless, some crimes are so grievous that the
appropriate punishment for them is capital punishment. Complementary, commissioners discuss
their petitions based on the repetitive nature of

Paleolithic vs Neolithic Cc Essay
Human existence has lasted over several million years and in that time there has been countless
advances in the way we live. Human history has had many diverse periods of time, one being the
Stone Age. During the Stone Age there were two major subdivisions, the Paleolithic and Neolithic
periods. The Paleolithic, which lasted until about 10,000 years ago, had a significant separating
factor from the Neolithic, ending in 2000 B.C.E. This factor was the way in which the people in
these periods acquired food. The Paleolithic people hunted and gathered their food while the

During the Neolithic period economics seemed to have played a bigger role than in the
Paleolithic age. This was mostly because of the agricultural advancement which had a significant
function in their economic system. They had surpluses of food which allowed them to trade and
sell. Also having something to barter with enabled them to buy better tools and equipment for
farming. This was not so with the Paleolithic people since they hunted and gathered their food.
Since they relied on themselves they had no reason to trade or sell. They only depended on their
handmade stone and bone tools. The only similarity between these two periods was that their lives
revolved around their need for food. The social lives of the Paleolithic foragers greatly differ from
that of the Neolithic farmers. This is mostly because of their way of acquiring food. The foragers
had plenty of time after they hunted and gathered there food because that was all they had to do
while the farmers constantly had to maintain their fields. The foragers spent their free time making
art such as cave painting and constructing tools. With what little time the farmers had they used it to
build structures, tools and containers for the next harvest. One thing they both had in common was
the specific jobs that they assigned to men and women based on each gender s abilities. In the
Paleolithic time the men were the hunters, since they were more muscular,

The Great Purge Character Analysis
Another prominent feature of the novel is the effects of the Great Purge on society. Fear and
brutality reigned while logic and decency disappeared. Beginning with fear, this emotion can be
seen throughout the novel. Starting at the beginning of the novel, fear is shown when the police
come to arrest Rubashov. Be quiet, shouted Vassilij, Here is Authority. The woman became quiet
at once (7)...The house was silent after the one shrill woman s cry, but they had the feeling that
all inhabitants were awake in their beds, holding their breath (8). When the people in the house
realized the police were there, they became very quiet and listened. As people were taken away
during the purges, people stayed quiet to avoid becoming involved. This fear is also seen when
Richard and Rubashov see a bodyguard of the regime while meeting. Richard is clearly afraid
and stammers heavily (39). Another important instance of fear was when Michael Bogrov is
being led away for execution he shouted for help, screams, whimpers, and hangs like a doll
(144). Another example of fear is Hare lip. While in the third hearing with Rubashov and
Gletkin, Hare lip had a hunted gaze, trembling upper lip, a white face, and a sunken head he
quivered as though struck by a whip and in his eyes appeared the flickering of naked animal
terror (200 211). He clearly was terrified and was only offering this testimony due to a desire to
stay alive. The book mentioned that Hare lip looked utterly destroyed the

Exodus 20 Research Paper
Christians live their life by the word of God. They take the Bible and the contents within and hold

Christians the Ten Commandments. Christians take the Ten Commandments and make those the

on how to live their lives but, Exodus 20 is not the only chapter in the Biblethat gives Christians
commands that they must follow. Later in the Bible, in Leviticus 20:27, the Bible says, A man or

Writers create stories with characters to portray negative and positive traits. The writer of The

The character, Bilbo Baggins, shows positive traits while characters like the trolls, show negative
traits. Also, at this point in the story, intelligence has proven its power over physical strength. The
character traits that the author thinks are positive are usually expressed through the main character

Duck bills are hard and used to catch fish, so it has to be strong enough to hold a fish. However,

PROMOTE GOOD PRACTICE IN HANDLING INFORMATION IN HEALTH AND SOCIAL
CARE SETTINGS
LEARNING OUTCOME 1
UNDERSTAND REQUIREMENTS FOR HANDLING INFORMATION IN HEALTH AND
SOCIAL CARE SETTINGS
The following are current legislation and codes of practice that relate to handling information in
health and social care. They also summarise the main points of legal requirements for handling
information.
THE DATA PROTECTION ACT 1998The Data Protection Act 1998 is a piece of legislation
which defines the law on processing data of people living within the United Kingdom. The Data
Protection Act 1998 is set out in eight principles:
1.Personal data must be processed fairly and lawfully.

LEARNING OUTCOME 2
BE ABLE TO IMPLEMENT GOOD PRACTICE IN HANDLING INFORMATION
Records are kept to promote, provide and improve the care provided for patients. They are also
used for audits and quality assurance carried out by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).
Records contain very sensitive personal information; they are regarded as legal documents and are
a legal requirement to be kept. All information written in files should always be clear, useful and
relevant. Do not include anything irrelevant or opinions that are not backed up by facts. Only the
patient whose notes you are writing in should be written about and all entries should be clear,
factual and true.
MANUAL INFORMATION STORAGE SYSTEMS These are systems which do not use any
computerised device. All data would usually be kept on paper in a manual filing system. The most
common type of file used is a brown manila folder which would contain all documents fastened
inside. Other types would be ring binders, lever arc files and computer printouts which have been
bound.
All files in a manual storage system have to be organised and stored to make them easily
accessible. If there are not too many files that need to be organised an alphabetical system may be
used. All files would be stored in a lockable filing cabinet or cupboard. Files

Essay My experience at the Riverside Metropolitan Museum
INTRODUCTION Some say that it is better not to dwell on the past because it cannot be changed.
To these people, it is not necessarily bad to reminisce on what has happened throughout the years,
but it is better to focus on what is taking place right now. They believe that the present is another
chance to start fresh and anew without letting past experiences burden them. However, what they
do not seem to realize is that the past, present, and future are interrelated. The present is a result of
the past, while the future depends entirely on the choices, (and course of action for those choices),
that are made in the present. With that being said, studying humanity and past cultures are
significant to society. Attempting to understand why... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The collections of this museum include displays for the Natural History, Anthropology, and
History departments. Although not all of the exhibits are shown year round, the display for the
Native Americans of Southern California is. It features the Chumash, Tongva, Serrano, Luiseno,
Cahuilla, and Kumeyaay tribes. There are also some exhibits for non Californian tribes such as
the Navajo and Pueblo peoples. Out of all of the aforementioned tribes, this paper mainly focuses
on the Luiseno, Kumeyaay, and Navajo. These three stood out the most because of the contents
within each of the exhibits. The artifacts associated with each culture were unique and eye
catching. MUSEUM EXHIBIT 1) Artifact Display The three departments mentioned earlier
were divided into distinct sections and subsections. The exhibits for the Natural History
collection were located on the left side of the museum. It included different displays for perfectly
preserved animal specimens, minerals, fossils of plants, and desert findings by American
biologist, Edmund C. Jaeger. Located directly across from this segment was the History section,
which consisted of artifacts relating to tools and equipment as well as pictures of early residents
in order to show how Riverside developed over time. In addition to this, different time periods in
American history were displayed such as the Civil War. It contained personal portraits, old models
of weapons, and replicas of

Voltaire And Martin s Use Of Optimism In Candide
Candide, a novel based on its author s sardonic view of the philosophy rich 18th century Europe,
illustrates unwavering optimism. Ultimately, Voltaire only disputes living in the best of all
possible worlds when one does not go work in the garden, (Voltaire 144). He believes one has to
work and put forth effort in order for everything to be for the best.
Voltairecreated Pangloss to be an optimistic and abstract philosopher that epitomizes the idle
thinkers of the time that he deemed utterly ridiculous; he despised philosophers arguing without
understanding the outside world. Pangloss s ceaseless preaching about everything being for the
best keeps himself as well as Candide from participating in the realm around them. For example,
rather than saving the Anabaptist s life, Candide prioritizes Pangloss s outlook on his death s
convenience. It is proved, he used to say, that things cannot be other than they are, for since
everything was made for a purpose, it follows that everything is made for the best purpose, (Voltaire
20). Thus, it is not until they leave the castle that they learn anything different. ... Show more

each other, as they do to day, that they have always been false, cozening, faithless, ungrateful,

The Sexual Assault Of Sex Offenders
Rough Draft
For many people the term sex offender brings up extreme emotions. However, it is the nature of
the crime that needs to be considered before the label. The laws and punishments that are enforced
during and after prison varies by where the offender lives and the severity of the crime. But, there
is much more that needs to be considered. First , the things that are considered sexual assault, if the
child is forced to have sex without consent, if the person is having sex with a minor, or sexually
assaulting a person that is over the age of 18. These are just a few of the issues that can be
considered Sexual Assault. But, not all sexual offences are convicted the same, the punishment
varies by the location of where the sex ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Their afterward registry amount varies as well if the person that was assaulted was over the age of
18 then the offender has to register for 10 years.
Next, is going to be about the punishments for sex offenders, juvenile sex offender s etc. When the
offender is placed in front of the judge the statuses will normally set a range of punishments.
Some judges will also examine the sex offenders and irritation and justifying issues when
deciding on the fully committed sentence. This is because if they have more justifying factors
about them than aggravating factors they could get lucky and get a more lenient sentence. If they
have committed a bad enough sexual assault then they can get 24, 36 or even 48 months in
prison with a $10,000 bond. This kind of sentence with the bond being allowed is called the
determinant this is basically there to kind of let the offender know that the law is not kidding
around about sexual abuse or sexual assaults. This punishment also depends on the state of where
this assault was convicted if the child received any mental/physical damage to their body. In some
states they have begun to make their laws a little tougher with Florida making the number one spot
they have started to consider the death penalty. Also some states have slowed the death rate for
sexual offenses and some states have made a law with life without parole. There punishment can
also be varied

Comparing Machiavelli s The Prince And Letter To Francesco...
Niccolo Machiavelli, a Renaissance philosopher and historian, is regarded as one of the founders
of classical political philosophy and political science. To this day, scholars continue to debate
whether the Florencian writer is more sympathetic to the few or the many. With some of his texts
containing views contradicting the others, it is difficult to contend whether or not the philosopher
is a true democrat. Despite many of Machiavelli s seemingly democratic views and ideas, his
personal ideology appears to be more of a Republican nature. His republicanismis most informed by
his remarks on the people, nobles, and ideal state structure. Through analysis of his writings in The
Prince and The Discourses , and his Letter to Francesco Vettori,... Show more content on

If there is a minority, then the majority is much too large and may even impede on it. Democrats
govern by the masses according to majority rule, leading to critics labeling the structure as a
tyranny of the majority because of the lack of legal preservation of rights. For republicans,
however, justice is administered accordingly with set rules and guidelines, so as not to infringe
upon the minority. Machiavelli recognized the ongoing tensions between the few and many,
each trying to control the other, but never regarded it as an issue. In Discourses he writes, In
every republic there are two different inclinations: that of the people and that of the upper class,
and that all the laws which are made in favor of liberty are born of the conflict between the two.
(I IV). Here, Machiavelli actually sees this conflict as a source of political stability, necessary for
the growth of every Republic. Without tension, that would mean there is no coexistence between
regimes and only a single type left to dominate the platform. The existence of a dominant upper
class was necessary to keep a Republic in check; otherwise a, democracy could emerge and
dominate the political sphere. Machiavelli s sympathy to the few emerges from his view of human
nature. The reason why the philosopher has many critics is because his writings tend to sound quite
evil, dark, and gruesome in nature. To others,

Old Dominion Fright Line has a lot of new technology to help their customers ship their goods which would help them to be a higher degree company of caring for the goods they ship. Some of the technology they have is for their drivers which has on board camera to record them when they are speeding or even if the truck starts swerving on the road the camera would automatically cut on and start filming. Old Dominion Fright Line also has a Dock Yard Management System (DYM) that would help the company keep up with the information of the shipment (http://www.odfl.com /Landings/technologyLanding.faces 3 12 17). It also helps the consignor and consignee keep up with their shipment also and letting them know when the goods will be delivered. Some of the information I researched on Old Dominion Fright Line is that in 2015 their annual revenue was 2.97 billion which was up from 2014 by 6.6 percent. That tells me that they are a well oiled company and very efficient with their shipping technique. They shipped 10,129 (in thousands) in 2015 (http://www.odfl.com/Home/3 12 17). • 4. Non Fiscal Barriers And The Free Movement Of The European... This question concerns non fiscal barriers to the free movement of goods in the European Union. Issues concerning Articles 34,35 or 36 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (TFEU) are raised and Brian s potential claim is against France as the Member State who has enacted measures which may restrict imports and exports, thereby violating the Treaty. Firstly, considering the licence required by French legislation to importPS s, this could amount to a selling arrangement which is defined in the case of Keck as rules that concern who sells the product and when, where and how they go about it. Those selling arrangements which apply equally in law and fact will not invoke Article 34 TFEU. As the product, the PS, in not directly affected, the requirement of a licence may be a selling arrangement . However the selling arrangement does not apply equally in law and fact because there is no licence requirement mentioned for domestic producers of PSs . As the licence discriminates against imports, this may invoke Article 34 and it is likely to be a measure equivalent to a quantitative restriction (MEQR). MEQRs were defined in Dessonville as All trading rules capable of hindering, directly or indirectly, actually or potentially, intra Community trade . In other words, an MEQR applies only to imports and not to everyone. As the licence is an additional requirement for imported PSs, and applications are only considered once a year in August, it makes imports more ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The True Heroes Of World War II Scientists of the Manhattan Project: The True Heroes of World War II The morning of August 15, 1945, Americans rejoiced as World War II came to an end after Japan had been bombed twice by atomic bombs which completely decimated the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Most people know this would be the only nuclear attack ever made in history, but what people do not know would be who created these nuclear weapons, and how they created them. The Manhattan Project, created by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, included the most brilliant scientists of all time. The President created this project because he obtained information that Germany could possibly create a nuclear weapon. Essentially, this project began working on the idea because the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Without this team, America would not have survived if the Germans ever actually created the atomic bomb, and Roosevelt knew that. The President created this team because of an issue that had been brought up to him one month before. Albert Einstein (a future scientist to work on the Manhattan Project) sent a letter explaining that German scientists had discovered something unimaginable. It stated: In the course of the last four months it has been made probable through the work of Joliot in France as well as Fermi and Szilard in America that it may become possible to set up a nuclear chain reaction in a large mass of Uranium, by which vast amounts of power and large quantities of new radium like elements would be generated. Now it appears almost certain that this could be achieved in the immediate future. (Einstein) Albert Einstein knew that this could be possible and knew that German scientists had started on experimenting with the newly found chain reaction in Uranium ore. This shows that Einstein knew of the dangers of nuclear weapons in the near future and he openly wanted to help the United States succeed in liberation of the Nazi troops in Europe. Einstein highly recommended Roosevelt to speed up the experimentation of nuclear. This proves that without the knowledge of Einstein, Germany would surpass the United States in technological warfare. He committed those crimes between 1974 and 1991. The acronym BTK stands for blind, torture, and kill. Soon after each incident, he sent anonymous letters to the police and taunting them by offering knowledge of the killings. • 7. Factors Affecting The Biodiversity Of The Lake Many lakes across the globe are home to a wide variety of organisms, which are supported by both the lakes themselves and by the abundance of varying habitats surrounding them. Lake Naivasha (0В°45 N, 36В°20 E) is one such lake: Situated within the rift valley, Lake Naivasha is a freshwater home to an abundance of both native and alien flora and fauna, both aquatic and terrestrial (Otiang a Owiti Oswe, 2007). The lake has 3 main surface inflows; from the Malewa, Gilgil and Karati rivers, but is an endorheic lake (Otiang a Owiti Oswe, 2007); so is a closed hydrological system on the surface (Figure 1). Nevertheless, it is thought that water from the lake does move southward underground, through volcanic rocks (Clarke et al., 1990, Ojiambo et al., 2001). There are various factors that contribute to the biodiversity of the lake; however one the most predominant factors is the impact that the steep increase in Naivasha s population has had on the lake. 70% of Kenya s horticultural output is produced in the Lake Naivasha area (Otiang a Owiti Oswe, 2007), which makes it an area of extreme national economic importance. Due to this thriving industry, the lake s population has risen from an estimated 7,000 in the 1969, to approximately 300,000 in 2007 (Ouma Oloo, 2007). This rapid population growth has had effects on many components of the ecosystem, including changes in lake levels and water composition, loss of habitats, introduction of alien species and decline in many species ... • 9. A Blended Future Of Technology Geoffrey Tibbs Dr. Dimock EN 140 07 12 February 2016 A Blended Future Technology in education is not a new concept, especially at the college level. Universities are encouraged to offer online courses, or as freelance journalist Chrissie Long and many other experts call them, MOOCs (massive online open courses), to reach out to more students and provide them with a more convenient style of learning (455). While MOOCs certainly have their strengths, how far should universities go? What is the future of online education? Because the lectures are outside of class, there is more time for discussion and clarification. The lectures in strictly face to face courses are presented in class, so there is not usually enough time for in depth discussions. MOOCs are entirely online, so there is no meeting for discussion. Blended courses do meet and have time for discussions, but there are some drawbacks as well. For example, if a student has a question that he or she cannot find the answer to, the student will have to wait until the next in class meeting or email the professor to get the answer. In face to face classes, the student could ask the professor immediately, but a student in a blended course would still be able to eventually ask the professor in person, which is an advantage over a MOOC. Even though face to face classes have more access to professors, and MOOCs do not require the student to come to campus, blended courses remain beneficial to students because they provide more time for discussions and clarification than other types of classes. Aside from more in class discussion, blended courses also allow students to set their own paces. In an article for U.S. News World Report, author Jordan Friedman mentioned a 2011 Kaplan Inc. research review that said blended learning programs can potentially offer more personalized, student focused and flexible forms ... • 11. The Winding Stair And Other Poems As Professor Pethica points out, the volume The Winding Stair and Other Poems is extraordinary because its textual history is particularly elaborate, even by Yeats s standards. Although I would love to explore the relationship between different editions, as we did when we talked about different editions of Wilde Swans at Coole, the task is too huge to be tackled sufficiently in this paper. In order to preclude any ambiguity, I would like to clarify that whenever I use the title The Winding Stair and Other Poems in this paper, unless otherwise specified, I am referring to the last edition published in 1933. Since the early stage of Yeats s career, the poet has been concerned with mortality. The poet seems to suggest that art is the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Losing all touch with the finer consciousness of the age it would be, not only irresponsible, but anemic (Foster, 441). In the poem Three movements, the poet observes that Shakespearean fish swam the sea, far away from land; / Romantic fish swam in nets coming to the hand; / What are all those fish that lie gasping on the strand? (Finneran, 240) Yeats is neither detached Shakespearean fish, nor credulous Romantic fish; he is the fish that lie gasping on the strand, and the volume The Winding Stair and Other Poems is his struggle with the crisis of his age, both the age of the poet (nearly 70 at the time) and the age of the world (1930s). We have talked a lot about Yeats s dialectical effort to transcend mortality and achieve immortality in his poetry. Such effort to transcend mortality presupposes the dichotomy between life and death. Indeed, in previous volumes, may concepts are contingent upon a symmetrically opposing idea: the symbol of the Mask presupposes the dichotomy between self and anti self, and many of Yeats s poems feature the dichotomy between female and male. However, in the volume The Winding Stair and Other Poems, Yeats points out a simple yet fundamental fact, that these dichotomies are all human constructs. In the poem Vacillation, the speaker solemnly observes that Between extremities / Man runs his course (Finneran, 250). The most important dichotomy that Yeats inspects in this volume is the one between life and death. The poet points ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. The Historical Prevalence Of Bisexuality Essay The historical prevalence of bisexuality is hard to determine because same sex sexual activity has traditionally been very stigmatized; furthermore bisexuality is often ignored in historical discussions of sexual orientation. Nonetheless, over the past few decades, the status quo with regard to same sex sexual activity has changed drastically. The repeal of anti gay laws and the 2003 supreme court decision Lawrence v. Texas which eliminated all remaining sodomy laws in the United States, the removal of homosexualityfrom its designation as a sexual disorder in the DSM, the existence of high profile LGBTQ figures, and the push for, and legalization of gay marriage in the United States and other western countries have all been significant contributing factors toward the normalization of same sex sexual activity. The general public has experienced increased exposure to the LGBTQ community, and as a result, acceptance of sexual minorities, including bisexual individuals, has grown. In spite of the progress toward acceptance of bisexual individuals, many people still view sexual orientation as dichotomous, which contributes to the erasure and/or invisibility of the bisexual community (Alarie Gaudet 2013). Some also perceive bisexuality as a transitional identity between heterosexuality and homosexuality, or believe that people who identify as bisexual are just too afraid to come out as homosexual (Israel and Mohr 2003; Alarie Gaudet 2013). In the years between 1924 and 1929 there was certainly a great array of talent in the Weimar. There was a great increase in literature, drama, art, music, and architecture. The experiences must be relevant, authentic and meaningful to the students for effective learningto take place. Besides individuals experiences, Dewey gives space for social experiences as well. He believes that students interactions with others and the environment are crucial factors contributing to their learning. Dewey s belief is further extended by Vygotsky s (1978) model of Zone of Proximal Development(ZPD). It has been seen on television and in movies, and the saying, quot; You are getting very sleepy quot; has become a widely used phrase. Hypnosis has almost always been thought of as a magic trick, but recent studies show that it is becoming more popular in medicine and everyday life. Hypnosis is defined as a state of mind where the body is more reactive to suggestions than in normal conditions. When under hypnosis, one narrows his or her attention to one subject or object. But under deeper trances, more effects are felt such as feeling mellow and light, or feeling very heavy (Hunter 3). The three methods of producing hypnosis are autohypnosis, heterohypnosis, and self hypnosis. Autohypnosis occurs when the mind concentrates on something such as a television program or a good book and causes a sense of extreme focus. When hypnosis is induced by another person, it is called heterohypnosis. Heterohypnosis is produced by a hypnotist, usually a professional or someone sufficiently trained, who puts someone into a hypnotic trance using either words, movements, or touch. The last method is self hypnosis, which is defined as the process of inducing hypnosis by oneself (Phelps 12 13). Even though there are three different defined ways of producing hypnosis, many experts have come to the conclusion that all hypnosis is self hypnosis. A hypnotist helps to guide and develop the hypnotic trance, but the person being hypnotized is initially in control (Alman 8). As Karen Olness, M.D. from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio explains, quot; All hypnosis is self hypnosis. We all tune things in and out all day long. Throughout this semester, the most prevalent subject that has continuously risen from conversation is that of sacrifice. Through the three books read in class, A Tale of Two Cities, A Doll s House, and Brave New World, one can learn that sacrifice is not a selfless thing, but a necessary part of life when attaining something he or she feels is of greater value. In A Tale of Two Cities, written by Charles Dickens, Sydney Carton is introduced as a lethargic alcoholic that has little interest in living. As the story progresses, however, Dickens shows Sydney s interest in another character named Lucie. Later, Sydney even announces his love to her before she weds another man, Charles Darnay, yet he still continues to speak of the worthlessness of his life as the story continues. It becomes very obvious to the reader that Lucie is the focal point of Sydney s life, and that he lives primarily in the light of her happiness. Towards the end of the novel, Darnay is in prison and soon facing the guillotine. Sydney, who looks stunningly similar to Darnay, takes his place and dies to ensure Lucie s happiness with Darnay in their future. • 25. Physics Of Hot Air Balloon Experiment Physics The following report explains the results of a model hot air balloon experiment that replicates a previous incident in which the temperature in the envelope was heated to a point until it was burned. After assessing the researched and calculated data, the assertion of the air in the balloon becoming too hot to lift the mass will be validated. The physics related to the operation of hot air balloons is essentially the use of hot air to create a buoyant force and generate lift. A hot air balloon is made of a large bag called the envelope, a wicker basket or gondola hung underneath and a burner located beneath the hole in the envelope to heat the air in the envelope. This heated air causes a buoyant force to occur (Edmonds, 2008). When an object is submerged in a fluid, it appears to weigh less than when it is outside of the fluid. The weight of the mass acts downwards, but when it is immersed in fluid, an upthrust or buoyant force is exerted by the fluid upwards (Edmonds, 2008). The buoyant force occurs because the pressure in a liquid or gas increases with increasing depth. Therefore, the pressure at the lower surface of a submerged object is greater than the pressure at its upper surface. Diagram 1 shows an object that has the same density as water. It is found that the object is in static equilibrium, tending neither to rise nor sink (Nave, 2014). As an author, it is typically harder to create suspense, but Doyle does an excellent job. With the use of red herrings, superstition, cliffhangers, and more, Doyle creates an atmosphere of tension and suspense. An example of one of these techniques is seen through the red herring: Selden. As soon as the word got out that Selden had broken out of jail, he was easily taken as a suspect to readers. However, In the movie, Selden causes more suspense by breaking into Baskerville Hall to get some food. Another example of Doyle creating suspense in the novel was through the cliffhanger: the man on the tor. Doyle creates suspense through this by leaving the readers wondering who was it that Watson saw on the tor. Although Doyle creates suspense pretty well, Attwood creates even more. One major asset that Attwood has is sound effects and noise. This is extremely efficient because Attwood can make the things that Doyle does even better. For example, when the scene about Selden escaping happens, sound effects such as sirens and yelling, make his escape more suspenseful. In the same way, Attwood uses sound effects for things such as the howling of the hound on the moor, or the screaming of victims. Although Attwood creates a lot of suspense through sound effects, I m sure that both Doyle and Attwood would agree that maybe the most effective way of creating suspense is through character actions and nature. In both the movie and the novel, in the resolution, a wave of fog appears before the hound arrives. In the novel, Holmes even says, the one thing upon earth which could have disarranged my plans.... Capital offenses include crimes against humanity, treason, war, murder, genocide, and espionage. Other crimes of this sort include rape, kidnapping, arson, robbery, theft, and burglary (Pojman Vaughn, 2009). During capital punishment, the death sentence put on the individual is followed by an execution. In the contemporary world, various countries are actively practicing this form of punishment despite the fact that most countries withdrew from the appointed practice. Many states enacted laws and policies that prohibit death as a remedy for various crimes. Other countries basically stopped practicing the mentioned form of punishment by making the occurrence insignificant. Advocacy for Capital Punishment Death penalty is morally permissible (Pojman Vaughn, 2009). Retribution has been the analogy according to most scholars and law philosophers across the word. In this case, the need for vengeance and vigilante justice takes the first priority. The argument is that any crimeperformed by an individual in the society requires the same magnitude of punishment. This was mostly because of the agricultural advancement which had a significant function in their economic system. They had surpluses of food which allowed them to trade and sell. Since they relied on themselves they had no reason to trade or sell. They only depended on their handmade stone and bone tools. The only similarity between these two periods was that their lives revolved around their need for food. The social lives of the Paleolithic foragers greatly differ from that of the Neolithic farmers. This is mostly because of their way of acquiring food. The foragers had plenty of time after they hunted and gathered there food because that was all they had to do while the farmers constantly had to maintain their fields. Another important instance of fear was when Michael Bogrov is being led away for execution he shouted for help, screams, whimpers, and hangs like a doll (144). Another example of fear is Hare lip. • 41. Essay My experience at the Riverside Metropolitan Museum INTRODUCTION Some say that it is better not to dwell on the past because it cannot be changed. To these people, it is not necessarily bad to reminisce on what has happened throughout the years, but it is better to focus on what is taking place right now. They believe that the present is another chance to start fresh and anew without letting past experiences burden them. However, what they do not seem to realize is that the past, present, and future are interrelated. The present is a result of the past, while the future depends entirely on the choices, (and course of action for those choices), that are made in the present. With that being said, studying humanity and past cultures are significant to society. Attempting to understand why... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 42. Voltaire And Martin s Use Of Optimism In Candide Candide, a novel based on its author s sardonic view of the philosophy rich 18th century Europe, illustrates unwavering optimism. Ultimately, Voltaire only disputes living in the best of all possible worlds when one does not go work in the garden, (Voltaire 144). He believes one has to work and put forth effort in order for everything to be for the best. Voltairecreated Pangloss to be an optimistic and abstract philosopher that epitomizes the idle thinkers of the time that he deemed utterly ridiculous; he despised philosophers arguing without understanding the outside world. Pangloss s ceaseless preaching about everything being for the best keeps himself as well as Candide from participating in the realm around them. For example, rather than saving the Anabaptist s life, Candide prioritizes Pangloss s outlook on his death s convenience. It is proved, he used to say, that things cannot be other than they are, for since everything was made for a purpose, it follows that everything is made for the best purpose, (Voltaire 20). Thus, it is not until they leave the castle that they learn anything different. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 44. Comparing Machiavelli s The Prince And Letter To Francesco... Niccolo Machiavelli, a Renaissance philosopher and historian, is regarded as one of the founders of classical political philosophy and political science. To this day, scholars continue to debate whether the Florencian writer is more sympathetic to the few or the many. With some of his texts containing views contradicting the others, it is difficult to contend whether or not the philosopher is a true democrat. Despite many of Machiavelli s seemingly democratic views and ideas, his personal ideology appears to be more of a Republican nature. His republicanismis most informed by his remarks on the people, nobles, and ideal state structure. Through analysis of his writings in The Prince and The Discourses , and his Letter to Francesco Vettori,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If there is a minority, then the majority is much too large and may even impede on it. Democrats govern by the masses according to majority rule, leading to critics labeling the structure as a tyranny of the majority because of the lack of legal preservation of rights. For republicans, however, justice is administered accordingly with set rules and guidelines, so as not to infringe upon the minority. Machiavelli recognized the ongoing tensions between the few and many, each trying to control the other, but never regarded it as an issue. In Discourses he writes, In every republic there are two different inclinations: that of the people and that of the upper class, and that all the laws which are made in favor of liberty are born of the conflict between the two. (I IV). Here, Machiavelli actually sees this conflict as a source of political stability, necessary for the growth of every Republic. Without tension, that would mean there is no coexistence between regimes and only a single type left to dominate the platform. The existence of a dominant upper class was necessary to keep a Republic in check; otherwise a, democracy could emerge and dominate the political sphere. Machiavelli s sympathy to the few emerges from his view of human nature. The reason why the philosopher has many critics is because his writings tend to sound quite evil, dark, and gruesome in nature. To others, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
