2. GRIME
Grime started in the lower socio-economic areas of England so the
majority of it’s fan base lies there. Originally grime started of as a way for
children/ young adults to express themselves in a way they were not
able to do before. As most of the lyrics are to do with the pain the artists
went through and their disadvantageous backgrounds ; Grime attracts
younger children (bottom right picture) who can relate to what the
artists have gone through. This gives them a sense that they are the
same, and hence makes them stay loyal to the artist and want to listen
to everything they say. The most popular grime artist started their
journeys on the road and were able to make strides up the ladder from
going from videos their friends recorded and posted onto social
networking sites, to being put on You tube via channels such as
SBTV, JDZ media, grime report, grime daily, etc. and then eventually
move onto MTV. The later success of the artists in terms of money and
performing on big stages acts as an incentive for fans to follow in their
footsteps, and follow the artist through their journey. The dark colors
used in the background behind a more colorful figure usually
associated with “making something from
nothing’ act as a signal to highlight that
they remember where they are from and
all the pain, but they have ,managed to
become something and become stars.
This is what attracts the majority of the
grime audience, and thus grime attracts
audience in their own unique, personal
way.

3. ROCK
Rock targets its audiences in different ways
to other genres. Although rock is usually seen
by many as dark and almost the ‘devils’
music, the magazine adverts here (top right
and centre left) show it to be a very colorful
vibrant and uplifting genre, which attracts
people who want to have fun and mess
about. Also, the image of the rock artist on
the magazine advert just having fun and
rocking, appeals to younger teenagers who
want to be rid of their inhibitions and just
have a good time.
Although originally rock was influenced by
blues singers and black people, the majority
of rock fans nowadays are of the white
ethnicity. Rock’s audience is majorly made
up of men, so they utilize this by having
macho videos, teenagers breaking rules,
having fun and being destructive; almost
hooliganism. Also this type of genre is very
,much heterosexual and tends to have
handsome lead singers, so this is typified by
the masculine nature of the magazine
adverts.
