How does your media product
represent particular social groups?
Age
When looking at my music magazine, a clear social group it represents is teenagers. By using the
colour scheme of black, white and red it shows the rebellious age group that this magazine is
aimed at attracting. Just like magazines like Kerrang, my magazine uses simple and easy to read
fonts and text that appeals to teenagers more than any other age group. Furthermore, the
bands and artists featured in the magazine are of this day and age such as Panic! At The Disco
and Twenty One Pilots meaning that it would appeal to the younger generation more because of
the newer nature of them bands/artists. Also, because they are younger bands/artists they
appeal to the younger generation like teenagers. The pages themselves are blocked out simply
but also creatively which is interesting to look at so it will attract teenagers rather than adults
who would be more attracted to a layout similar to Q magazine. There are lots of puffs and pop
ups on the pages which also appeal to teenagers because they seem to make the magazine look
less organised and messier which is appealing to teenagers are they can relate to this. However,
some could argue that the magazine also represents young adults because it includes news and
festival information that you would have to be a adult to apply/go to. And teenagers are not
normally interested in news, they just want the music.
Gender
I feel like this magazine represents both genders because it features both male and females
artists. However, it could be argued that it represents the male gender more. The magazine uses
a lot of dark colours, especially on the double page spread which has a solid black background,
which stereotypically men are more likely to enjoy whereas females are stereotypically more
likely to enjoy lighter colours. Furthermore, it represents the male gender by being majorly
dominated by pictures of male artists. Only two of the artists are female which shows that males
are the dominating gender. Because the magazine is male based it could represent that males
are bigger in the industry and that have more on an impact on the rock music legacy than
females do. The magazine could disinterest females because it could be seen as male based
which they could see as unequal. Also, they may be disinterested because stereotypically
females enjoy more gossip magazines not grungy music magazines meaning they could be
placed into the goth, emo etc stereotype if seen reading this magazine. By this magazine
representing both genders it appeals to the audience more as only using one gender in a
magazine would be boring. Also, it allows us to get male and female views on music and allow
both genders to feel equally represented.
Another way that my magazine represents gender is that in the
band shots, the male members are holding the instruments
showing that they are active and do things. While the female
member is presented as something to look at because she is sat
down sometimes and not holding any instruments. This is typical
representation of women in the media, shown as oppressed and
less important than men.
Class
Even though my magazine is aimed towards teenagers and the younger generation so it is
harder to say what class they belong to, I feel that my magazine is aimed towards the working
class. This is because the magazine has lots of dark colours and a messier layout so it feels that
somebody of a lower class would be more attracted to it. Whereas, magazines using
bright/lighter colours and a clean cut layout would be aimed towards upper classes. I feel that
the working class would be more likely to buy this magazine as it is a monthly magazine so they
would have the time to save up the money to buy it every month whereas, middle and upper
class would be more likely to buy a weekly magazine or have an online subscription because
they can afford it. Furthermore, the magazine is relatively cheap for a monthly magazine
because it is aimed at the working class more, so it is cheaper as they are more likely to be in
poorer part time jobs that pay less than the upper class. Also, they are more likely in be in public
education rather than private education so they may relate more to a dark, grungy magazine as
they feel like their life is dark. The magazine is aimed more towards the working class as it is
slightly less professional and messy but I feel that this is what would appeal to the working class
as it would be like their getaway every month.
Social Groups
My music magazine’s audience can also fit into a social group such as punks or indie hipsters.
This is because the magazine is very dark, grungy and messy which appeals to these social
groups because they are stereotypically associated with these. In addition, these social groups
stereotypically listen to rock and the genre of music that my magazine is based around. Also, the
magazine incorporates lots of dark colours which goes against the norm of light colours which is
similar to these social groups who also go against the norms of society.

  • 1. How does your media product represent particular social groups?
  • 2. Age When looking at my music magazine, a clear social group it represents is teenagers. By using the colour scheme of black, white and red it shows the rebellious age group that this magazine is aimed at attracting. Just like magazines like Kerrang, my magazine uses simple and easy to read fonts and text that appeals to teenagers more than any other age group. Furthermore, the bands and artists featured in the magazine are of this day and age such as Panic! At The Disco and Twenty One Pilots meaning that it would appeal to the younger generation more because of the newer nature of them bands/artists. Also, because they are younger bands/artists they appeal to the younger generation like teenagers. The pages themselves are blocked out simply but also creatively which is interesting to look at so it will attract teenagers rather than adults who would be more attracted to a layout similar to Q magazine. There are lots of puffs and pop ups on the pages which also appeal to teenagers because they seem to make the magazine look less organised and messier which is appealing to teenagers are they can relate to this. However, some could argue that the magazine also represents young adults because it includes news and festival information that you would have to be a adult to apply/go to. And teenagers are not normally interested in news, they just want the music.
  • 3. Gender I feel like this magazine represents both genders because it features both male and females artists. However, it could be argued that it represents the male gender more. The magazine uses a lot of dark colours, especially on the double page spread which has a solid black background, which stereotypically men are more likely to enjoy whereas females are stereotypically more likely to enjoy lighter colours. Furthermore, it represents the male gender by being majorly dominated by pictures of male artists. Only two of the artists are female which shows that males are the dominating gender. Because the magazine is male based it could represent that males are bigger in the industry and that have more on an impact on the rock music legacy than females do. The magazine could disinterest females because it could be seen as male based which they could see as unequal. Also, they may be disinterested because stereotypically females enjoy more gossip magazines not grungy music magazines meaning they could be placed into the goth, emo etc stereotype if seen reading this magazine. By this magazine representing both genders it appeals to the audience more as only using one gender in a magazine would be boring. Also, it allows us to get male and female views on music and allow both genders to feel equally represented.
  • 4. Another way that my magazine represents gender is that in the band shots, the male members are holding the instruments showing that they are active and do things. While the female member is presented as something to look at because she is sat down sometimes and not holding any instruments. This is typical representation of women in the media, shown as oppressed and less important than men.

Class Even though my magazine is aimed towards teenagers and the younger generation so it is harder to say what class they belong to, I feel that my magazine is aimed towards the working class. This is because the magazine has lots of dark colours and a messier layout so it feels that somebody of a lower class would be more attracted to it. Whereas, magazines using bright/lighter colours and a clean cut layout would be aimed towards upper classes. I feel that the working class would be more likely to buy this magazine as it is a monthly magazine so they would have the time to save up the money to buy it every month whereas, middle and upper class would be more likely to buy a weekly magazine or have an online subscription because they can afford it. Furthermore, the magazine is relatively cheap for a monthly magazine because it is aimed at the working class more, so it is cheaper as they are more likely to be in poorer part time jobs that pay less than the upper class. Also, they are more likely in be in public education rather than private education so they may relate more to a dark, grungy magazine as they feel like their life is dark. The magazine is aimed more towards the working class as it is slightly less professional and messy but I feel that this is what would appeal to the working class as it would be like their getaway every month.
  • 6. Social Groups My music magazine’s audience can also fit into a social group such as punks or indie hipsters. This is because the magazine is very dark, grungy and messy which appeals to these social groups because they are stereotypically associated with these. In addition, these social groups stereotypically listen to rock and the genre of music that my magazine is based around. Also, the magazine incorporates lots of dark colours which goes against the norm of light colours which is similar to these social groups who also go against the norms of society.
