HOW DOES YOUR MEDIA
 PRODUCT REPRESENT
  PARTICULAR SOCIAL
       GROUPS?
My music magazine is aimed at a female audience
between the ages of 16-20 years. They are primarily of
middle/upper class and are fairly well-educated
therefore meaning that they are able to enjoy the subtle
complexity of my magazine. My target audience show an
interest in fashion and appearance as well as vintage-
style and indie music in the way that style is also an
important focus of my product. The social group of which
my magazine is aimed at is therefore very easy to
interpret and I ensured this was thoroughly reflected
throughout the content of my magazine.
STEREOTYPICAL SOCIAL GROUP: INDIE/VINTAGE
Here are various associated definitions of my targeted
social group for my music magazine 
-Indie kids are witty, intelligent kids that wear vintage
clothing and like to differ from the norm.
-People associated with having a vintage style are often
associated with wearing fashion clothing from the past.
-People interested in ‘vintage’ music are those who
enjoy artists and bands that go about creating music in
a dated manner or their songs are often acoustic and
natural.
-Indie kid is slang for a person who is keen on ‘Indie’
music and wears it’s fashions.
The images I have used throughout my work all reflect my
targeted social group in a similar way. The model I have used
appears to be an age of 17 or 18 years old, posed appropriately
and confidently yet subtly contented delivering a happy
message from my magazine. She is dressed in old fashioned
style clothing: the fur jacket originates from fashion from the
early nineteen hundreds and therefore reflects this vintage
theme that runs throughout my product. Her jewellery is also
very aged and could be considered an antique to her attire,
therefore supporting this notion additionally. By dressing my
model in this way, readers are able to relate to this style and
would feel comfortable and ‘at home’ when flicking through my
magazine since essentially this is also the way in which they
dress and focus their appearance on. Her makeup is basic made
up of soft colours. By avoiding bright primary colours I
therefore didn’t slip into the pop genre as this could put off my
target social group since they would not relate to this over-
exaggerated style. By presenting my model in this stereotypical
way that my target social group essentially are, my magazine
appears more welcoming and attractive to consumers therefore
encouraging them to purchase and enjoy my product.
The mise-en-scene of my images are not very
communicable in the way that the setting is simply a studio
in which the photos were taken. Nevertheless, both on my
front cover and double page spread the theme of ‘vintage’ is
displayed relating to my target audience and reinforcing the
genre of my magazine and fundamentally it’s title.
Front cover: My front cover image generally creates a
picture of style since the model is posed and could be
interpreted as taking her appearance very seriously in this
way.
Double page spread: The mise-en-scene created here links
together the theme of music from the past due to the
model’s appearance as well as her dated radio prop.
Both these features relate to my targeted social group and
therefore work successfully in reinforcing the appropriate
message and allowing the audience to relate and take
comfort to what they see within the product.
The representation I offer does not
widely challenge dominant ideas about
my social group and instead supports
the stereotypical audience in which I
aim to attract. The use of ‘vintage’
themed images and appropriate
colours entirely supports the
background of my targeted audience as
well as the age group being reflected
through the magazines content: for
example; the colours, clothes,
information, photos and way in which
these features are presented all relate
back to my specific social group
therefore supporting this ideology.
Despite this, if I were to improve the
representation of dominant ideas of
my social group, I would deliver this
through my magazine by using a more
vivid mise-en-scene that relate to the
hobbies and interests of my social
group: vintage/indie kids. An example
of this could be the process of activities
such as reading or drawing in a natural
environment- (relaxed atmosphere).
