Self Managers
Are On Time and Prepared for Class
Self Managers: On Time and Prepared
• Today we will discuss tardiness. Students are
expected to be ready for every class before
the bell rings.
• The data our school has collected tells us
that, in general, students who are consistently
on time to class tend to have significantly
better grades.
Respectful, Safe, Responsible
• Students who are on time and prepared for class
are demonstrating that they are self-managers.
• They areRESPECTFULto their fellow classmates
and teacher by not disrupting the learning of
others.
• They are SAFE in the hallways while getting to
class on time.
• They are RESPONSIBLE by bringing all necessary
materials to class.
Self Managers:
• Bring all needed material to class
(textbooks, homework, pencils, etc.)
– going back to your locker for materials will result
in a tardy if you fail to return before the bell
Self Managers:
• Take materials for multiple classes with them
to avoid going to their locker after each class if
they have difficulty arriving on time
Self Managers
• Use the four minute passing period to take
care of “necessary business” (bathroom, etc.)
Self Managers
• Walk to class
– Hallway expectations are still important!
Self Managers
• Are physically in their seat and ready to learn
to be marked present.
– (Your teacher may have other requirements such
as working on targets etc.)

• Ask a teacher/staff for a pass if they will be
late for the tardy to be excused. Passes will
only be issued for legitimate reasons.
Self Managers
• Check in at the attendance window when late
to school for a late slip
Self Manager: On Time and Prepared
• If you do these things, you are self-managing
your own behavior. That means you are in
control of yourself as a person. That is very
important.
Activity
• Get into groups of 3-4 students.
• Brainstorm at least 3 or 4 consequences for
being tardy to class, practice, work, picking up
friends, etc.
Quick Whip
• One at a time, each group is to put up one
brainstormed tardy consequence on the
board.
• Continue around the room until there are no
new consequences to write.
Back on Track: School Consequences
• If you don’t do these things, the following system is in
place to get you back on track:
 1st tardy – warning
 2nd tardy – phone call home
 3rd tardy – teacher driven intervention (examples –
student calls home, detention, conference, written
explanation/plan of action from the student, etc.)
 4th tardy - written referral
 5th, 6th, 7th…and on – written referral for each tardy
What are some reasons why students
are tardy to class?
• What can be done as a student to help get to
class on time?
• What can be done by the school to help
students get to class on time?
– Longer passing periods are not an option!
Think-Pair-Share
Self Manager Guide
• Go back to your self-manager guide, choose 2
(depending on time) to give a short response
to:
– Why is being on time and prepared a
demonstration that you are kind, safe, and
responsible?
– List each thing you need to do in order to be on
time, prepared for class.
– How is being on time and prepared an example of
self-managing behavior?
Teacher Hints: Brainstorm/Whip
Activity
• Have students brainstorm, in groups of
four, the consequences of being tardy to class
and life (work, sports, picking up friends from
work, etc).
• Encourage them to think about missing some
of the lesson and feeling behind, losing a job
or being dropped from the team.
