Attendance &
 Punctuality
Attendance Matters!
• The link between attendance and
  achievement is well documented
  – 10% of regularly absent students achieve
Distinction or Merit grades compared with
38% of occasionally absent students and
    58% of present
  – 21% of regularly absent students do not
achieve, compared to 3% of present
    students
Attendance Matters!
The potential effects of irregular attendance
are:
  – Get behind with work
  – Lose the thread of the topics being taught
  – Become demotivated
  – Lose friendships
  – Miss out on important careers and guidance
    inputs
  – Miss out on extra curricular opportunities
  – Are less likely to feel involved
Jane Smith
Jane’s attendance is always
     around 90%.
She thinks this is pretty good.

•90% attendance means that she is absent from
one lesson per week

•Last year she missed the equivalent of three
weeks of teaching which equates to one brief or
assignment
Attendance %
• What’s yours?
My Attendance is…
• Excellent 100%
• Good 90-99%
• Acceptable 80-89%
• Poor 70-79%
• Very Poor 60-69%
Poor Attendance Affects
Me
 – Miss important, key, interesting information
 – Miss important, key instructions
 – Worry, stress, concern, anxiety
 – Spend more time catching up
 – Understand assignments
 – Become disinterested, bored, resulting in poor
   behaviour
 – Miss out on activities, opportunities, fun!
Poor Attendance Affects
My Peers
•Kept waiting
•Become annoyed, irritated
•Bored by repetition
•Disrupted by late arrival and repetition
•Let down if in group or team work
•Fewer people to work with
•Different group dynamics, inconsistency
Poor Attendance Affects
My Tutors
•Have to repeat instructions
•Loose the thread or flow of the session
•Become irritated, disrupted, annoyed
•Have to spend time challenging learner
lateness and following procedures
•Distracts from core learning of the session
•May have to make changes to session
plans inc. group work
Poor Attendance Affects
My College
•Poor OFSTED reports
•Poor Teacher Observation
•Poor reputation
•Time taken calling learners, printing
reports, sending letters, meeting with
parents, meetings between staff
Ways to Improve
            Attendance
• Set off earlier
• Catch an earlier bus, train -
  http://www.traveline-northwest.co.uk/journeyplanner/e
• Do not rely on others or accept lifts, if they
  make you late
• Wear a watch, set your clock 5 mins fast so
  you always arrive early
• Set your alarm 30 mins earlier, keep it away
from your bed, have several different alarms
  inc. lights, radio, traditional
Ways to Improve
              Attendance
• Ask someone to call you, wake you, remind you
• Ensure that you are prepared to leave on time,
pack bag the night before, make lunch, clean up
• Don’t mess about watching TV, playing computer
games, texting, playing with the dog, chatting to
your friends, trying on lots of outfits, styling hair etc.
• You are only sick if you CANNOT get out of bed
and/or need medical attention. If you can go
shopping or to a friends house, you are well
  enough to attend college
Acceptable Reasons for
        Being Late
• Serious or Severe Transport Delays –
These would be reported on the news
and affect everyone on that route
• Accidents – Do happen (occasionally)
• Faulty Alarm, Overslept (once)
• Car Breakdown (once)
• Family Emergency (rarely)
• Sickness (rarely)
Un-Acceptable Reasons for
        Being Late
• Doctors/Dentist Appointment – Should be made outside
  class time
• Went out last night – Hung-over – Be responsible
• Got lost – Been here over a year
• Missed or late Bus, Train, Lift – They always are!!!
• Friends or Family – Prioritise yourself
• Coffee, Breakfast, Food – Get up earlier, Get on break
• Sickness – Every Monday Morning!!! Unlikely
• Lost track of time – Refer to your watch…
• Couldn’t be bothered to get up or Uninterested
• Clothes or Hair not right – Get up earlier, Be prepared
Being Late
Makes you appear:
  – Disorganised
  – Disrespectful
  – Unreliable
  – Uncaring
  – UNEMPLOYABLE

Is this how you want to appear???
Percentage Attendance
       Weekly

   90% = 1 session, ⅓ day
   80% = 2 sessions, ⅔ day
   70% = 3 sessions, 1 day
   60% = 4 sessions, 1 ⅓ days
Percentage Attendance
     Termly/Yearly

   90% = 1.2 wks = 3.7 wks
   80% = 2.4 wks = 7.4 wks
   70% = 4.8 wks = 14.8 wks, 1 term
   60% = 9.6 wks = 29.6 wks, 2 terms

3 terms per year, 12 weeks per term
37 weeks per year
High Attendance =
• More learning opportunities
• More qualifications
• More choice

    IT’S YOUR CHOICE!
The Manchester College

• Minimum attendance target is 87%

• 100% is expected
TMC Process
• It is the personal tutors responsibility to
  monitor A&P

• The parent of the learner must inform the
college if they are going to be absent/late

• All appointments to be made outside college
time and if not evidence of appointments
  must be produced
TMC Process
• Lateness should be challenged without
  disruption to the lesson

• Learners should be questioned at an
appropriate time to determine the reason for
  lateness
TMC Process
1st absence

1.Tutor to inform Reception and PT

2.Reception to phone student

3.Reception to respond via email
TMC Process
No improvement

1.Reception to send letter home

2.PT monitor and action level 1 of
  disciplinary procedure

3.Monitor for 2 weeks
TMC Process
No improvement/Continued absence
1.Follow disciplinary procedure level 2
2.Reception to send 2nd Letter
3.Written warning

Still no improvement
1.Reception to send 3rd Letter
2.Parents Invited in
Learner Late Book
• Students are to complete and sign late book
