Probing by questioning is one of the teaching skill that can enables the teacher to face the situation after asking the question in the classroom. The teacher who masters this skill can lead the students to correct response, if they give incorrect or partially correct response. Moreover the teacher can check the understanding of the students in terms of the answers given by them, he can involve more and more students in classroom interaction and can can make the students think logically and critically.

Presentation summary: An exploration into how UAE high school students feel about responding and receiving responses from their peers about their writing. The experiment I am going to present aims at showing the audience how motivating using blogs in writing classes can be. Questions are most welcome. Both secondary and tertiary teachers will find the presentation useful. This experiment has been so overwhelmingly successful that participants will try it with their own classes to implement effective peer-feedback routines in their classes. Presenter bio Arini Muntaha has been teaching English for more than 10 years. She earned her MA TESOL Degree at the American University of Sharjah. She is interested in exploring new ideas and techniques for teaching English. She considers using computers in classrooms a major challenge which is worth exploring.

Lack of parent involvement and help at home. Low income community. Deployment heavy. Teachers face extensive paperwork and strict guidelines that focus on state testing. These guidelines can take two weeks to go through lessons which can leave little time for additional help at the end of the year to catch up. The amount and frequency of state mandated tests/assessments. Lack of parental support and the shortage of teachers. I have taught in classrooms with over 30 students and there are many substitutes filling classrooms. I see similarities in the lack of parent support towards academics and the concern with state tests and guidelines. How are you addressing these issues? Limit amount of assignments that require parental assistance. Sending supplies home to complete assignments. Standing up for students and requesting modifications from higher for students that need additional help. By reaching out to parents and trying to involve them in the classroom which can be difficult because many work multiple jobs and have multiple children in different grades. We try and help with homework during after school tutoring sessions which are mostly volunteers (teachers working late). These are similar in that the teachers try and help students with homework in different ways like limiting assignments that require help and offering tutoring after school. What role does technology play in classrooms to support teaching and learning? There are great tech tools out there and it takes trying different tools out to see which enrich the students the most. Technology is not necessary but can be a great aide as kids are tech savvy. It plays a huge role as it helps to keep students engaged , helps teachers present materials in different format and give children the opportunity to interact with technology they would not otherwise have at home. I see a difference in teaching preferences as the first teacher sees technology as helpful but not necessary and the other who relies on it in their classroom. CHAPTER 11 Standards, Curriculum, and Accountability Teacher Interview: Lorraine (Reina) Floyd Lorraine (Reina) Floyd teaches pre-algebra and honors algebra at Irmo Middle School, home of the Yellow Jackets, in District Five of Lexington and Richland counties in South Carolina. There are 65 teachers at Irmo, 81% of whom have advanced degrees. There are 400 white, 409 African American, 40 Hispanic, and 25 Asian Pacific Islander students at Irmo; 146 of these students have disabilities, and 23 have limited English proficiency. Sixty-seven percent of the seventh and eighth graders at Irmo are enrolled in high school credit courses. In 2011, Irmo Middle School exceeded standards for progress toward the 2020 South Carolina performance vision: By 2020 all students will graduate with the knowledge and skills necessary to compete successfully in the global economy, participate in a democratic society, and contribute positively as members of families and communities. Why did you decide to become a teacher? My interest in teaching was first sparked when as a young child my father regularly played “school” with me. He let me “teach” him basic math concepts like addition and subtraction well before I formally learned them in school. Later, in the eighth grade, I had the distinct pleasure of having both my language arts and social studies classes taught by Mrs. Bowers. She approached classroom management and assessment in an engaging and inspirational manner. Ultimately, I went into teaching in hopes of sparking a love of learning in students like she did with me. Where do you find joy in teaching? I derive my joy from watching students become more comfortable with themselves and each other as mathematicians. They build their confidence in their math abilities by discussing and supporting their thinking process. I love hearing my students participate in mathematical discourse. It’s sad, but so many of my students start the school year with a defeatist attitude. Somewhere along the way someone sent them the message that they aren’t capable of learning, and therefore it’s not worth the time or effort. The degree to which these students gain confidence varies. At first, many of these students view my encouragement as bothering them, but the joy on their faces when they gain understanding is more than worth their initial discomfort. Unfortunately, not all of my students experience the level of success that I would like them to, but they all experience enough success in our classroom that I see an improvement in their effort and self-efficacy by the end of the year. How would you describe excellence in teaching? To me excellence in teaching is like perfection—it isn’t something to be obtained, but to continuously strive for. Your finished paper must include a title page and reference page and should not exceed seven pages. James is a first year English teacher in a low-income high school outside of a major metropolitan area. His students are of diverse backgrounds and equally diverse learning styles. As part of his opening unit, he is preparing to teach his class about the tools that authors use to make their writing more engaging. He decides to focus on symbolism, metaphor, and simile. He has already developed a vocabulary handout that defines each word and includes examples, but when he does an initial check for understanding he finds that most of his students are lost. Specifically, he finds that his students are having a hard time understanding what a comparison is. This makes the concepts of simile and metaphor impossible to comprehend. James decides to design a 45 minute lesson that clarifies for students what comparing is. How might James structure his 45-minute lesson to include elements of visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learning? What methods can James use to check for comprehension once the lesson is complete? How might he follow up in ensuing class periods as a continued check of comprehension and to remediate students who may still not understand? Sean teaches an art class in a public elementary school near Chicago. Many of his students come from difficult circumstances and he has worked hard to make his lessons engaging and accessible for a diverse group of learners. Recently, he has been frustrated with off-task behavior such as talking, moving around the room, and horseplay. A colleague suggests to Sean that he try channeling the energy by including aspects of kinesthetic learning in his room. He decides to plan kinesthetic movement into his next unit which is focused on clay sculpting. Specifically, he wants students to be able to correctly sculpt a small human figure in the act of running. Describe a three lesson sequence that would allow Sean to include kinesthetic, visual, and auditory learning in his sculpting unit. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error. Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials. This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
