Taekwondo is a Korean military practices and
methods which have their place in the history of
Korea but have been adapted for use by both
military and non-military personnel as a method of
personal growth or recreation art.
It combines fight and self-defence techniques
with sport and exercise.
Taekwondo was developed by a variety of Korean
masters during the 1940s as combination of Karate
& Kung Fu.
Taekwondo is a product of
traditional Korean culture.
In Korean, tae means "to stomp"
or "to strike or break with the
Hand"; kwon means "to strike
or break with the Foot"; and do
means "way of life“
Thus, taekwondo may be loosely
translated as "the way of the
foot and the hand.“
TAE KWON DO is a 2,000-year-old form of martial
arts that originated in Korea. Early Koreans and
other Asian nations developed unique martial arts
for unarmed self-defence to complement their skills
with weapons. The first recorded evidence of
tae kwon do, according to the World Taekwondo
Federation Web site, is a mural painting found in a
tomb from the Koguryu kingdom (37 B.C. to A.D. 66)
depicting figures practicing martial arts techniques.
In 1957, Choi Hong Hi advocated the use of the name
Tae Kwon Do. In 1959 the Korea Taekwondo Association
(KTA) was established to facilitate the unification of Korean
martial arts. Seven years later, in 1966, under the
sponsorship of the KTA, the International Taekwondo
Federation (ITF) was established as the governing body for
the first unified style of taekwondo.
In 1973, after the withdrawal of KTA support of the ITF, the
South Korean government's Ministry of Culture, Sports and
Tourism established the Kukkiwon as the new national
academy for taekwondo and established the World
Taekwondo Federation (WTF) to promote taekwondo
specifically as a sport.
Since 2000, taekwondo has been
one of only two Asian martial arts
(the other being Judo) that are
included in the Olympic Games. It
became a demonstration event at
the 1988 games in Seoul, and
became an official medal event at
the 2000 games in Sydney. In
2010, taekwondo was accepted as
a Commonwealth Games sport.
A total of 24 gold medals, 24 silver medals and 32 bronze medals
have been awarded since 2000 and have been won by athletes
from 28 National Olympic Committees (NOC)
South Korea has been the most successful nation in Olympic
taekwondo, winning 14 medals (10 gold, 2 silver, 2 bronze).
