The Electronic power supply integrated with the
switching regulator for converting the electrical
power efficiently from one form to another form
with desired characteristics is called switched
mode power supply.
It works on the principle of
switching regulation
1.INPUT RECTIFIER STAGE
2.INVERTER STAGE
 It is used to convert an AC input to DC.(An SMPS with
DC input does not require this stage)
 This rectifier produces unregulated DC which is then
passed through the filter circuit.
The inverter stage converts the DC , whether
directly from the input or from the rectifier
stage described in the block diagram,to AC by
running it through a power oscillator , whose
output transformer is very small with few
windings at a frequency of tens or hundreds of
kilohertz.
4.OUTPUT RECTIFIER
 If the output required is to be isolated from input ,
inverted AC is used to draw the primary windings of
a high frequency transformer.
 This converts the voltage up or down to the required
output level on its secondary windings.
 If the DC output is required , the AC output from
the transformer is rectified.
Feedback circuit monitors the
output voltage and compares it with
the reference voltage.
Many household electrical devices require a supply of voltage which is
both constant and well regulated ,but the voltage which comes from
power outlets are noisy AC voltages.
The power from such outlet needs to be managed by electronic circuits
which are generally referred to as power supplies, even though the power
comes from the outlets.
Basically , the AC supply from the outlet has a sinusoidal wave shape
and it is rectified in order to produce a DC voltage.
The noisy high voltage needs to be converted to a regulated low voltage
so that it can be used by low voltage electronic devices such as TV , DVD ,
Mobile,etc..
