The Sustainable Sugarcane Initiative (SSI) aims to improve sugarcane productivity sustainably while minimizing input usage, developed through research at ICRISAT from 2008 to 2011. Key findings indicate that normal-sized bud chips aged 4-6 months are optimal for germination, and the best medium combination for seedlings is coco pith and sawdust. Field trials showed that SSI methods resulted in higher yields and tiller counts compared to conventional practices, garnering interest from state governments and private sugar mills for wider adoption.
