Survival 101… Who Makes the Cut?
In this assignment the flu killed everyone except for 13 people who all make it to a safe
bunker; however, there are only enough supplies for four of them to survive in the bunker for 2
years. Some of the resources in the bunker include a sewage system, waters, seeds, clothes, a few
books, some medical facilities, and a greenhouse. The 13 individuals who survived the flu are a
scientist, a priest, a married couple who are hippies and drug addicts, a single pregnant woman
with a 5 year old girl, an army officer who has mental instability, an elderly woman, a disabled
woman, a lawyer, a lazy welfare dependent, a doctor, and a university professor.
During our group discussion the four people that we decided should survive would be the
scientist, the professor, the doctor, and the male hippie. These four individuals would set up the
system for the next generation of humans. The scientist could be able to study why the flu
occurred and would have knowledge to pass down to his children about aspects of the universe
and matter. The professor could pass on the values of education and could be knowledgeable in
all general studies that she could teach her children. The doctor could use the medical facilities if
any of them were to become injured and could also teach his descendants how to perform
medical practices. These three individuals could write down their knowledge about science,
education, and medicine to teach their descendants about it. The male hippie would be the fourth
person allowed in the bunker because he would be able to use the greenhouse to plant seeds and
grow things for the four of them to survive with. The hippie would be the only male in order for
them to repopulate the world. The scientist, professor, and doctor probably do have more
leadership qualities than the disabled person or a welfare dependent; however, with a group of
completely different individuals problems can always occur.
