The document summarizes a group assignment where 13 survivors had to choose 4 people to receive food rations for 6 months in an underground bunker after a flu pandemic wiped out the rest of the population. The group chose a scientist, doctor, pregnant woman and her 5-year old child. They reasoned the doctor could provide medical care, the pregnant woman and child would help repopulate, and the scientist may be able to develop a cure or help with farming.

1. Survival—Who makes the cut?
This assignment was a very interesting assignment. I was put into a group that was given
this option; A flu has wiped out the entire population except for 13 people, and we all
manage to make it to a safe bunker. The catch is there is only enough supplies for 6
months of food for four people only.
We got to choose from:
A scientist Priest x
Married couple who are hippies and drug addicts x
A single pregnant woman with a 5 year old girl -An army officer who has mental instability of some sort but is useful nonetheless x
An elderly woman x
A disabled person x
A lawyer x
A lazy welfare dependent x
A doctor A university professor x
We kept the doctor, the pregnant woman and her five year old, and we kept the scientist.
Because the doctor could tend to wounds, the pregnant woman wouldn’t come without
her baby so we brought them to repopulate because the pregnant woman is obviously
fertile. We kept the scientist so he could attempt a cure or nonetheless use some farming
equipment.
We did not keep the priest because his skills did not seem very relevant to the situation.
We did not keep the married couple because they would go through withdraws and we
did not have the equipment to treat them.
We did not keep the army officer because he seemed like a threat to the child.
We did not keep the elderly woman because she had not explained any useful skills to
the group and may not be fertile.
We did not keep the disabled person because he/she also had not explained any useful
skills to the group.
We did not keep the lawyer because he/she would probably try to keep an argument
started and why he is “legally” right.
2. We did not keep the lazy welfare dependent because he/she was lazy—would not do any
work.
We did not keep the university professor because he would probably not have any useful
skills to the group aside from teaching, in which we have a doctor to help with that.
