1. Survey Responses and results.
Who are my target audience?
My main target audience will be Females from the ages of 18 to 25. This is because of the fact that
the majority of my responses came from females within this age group. Although my survey infact
said that my targeted age group shoud be directed at indviduals the ages of 15 to 18. I have slighlty
changed my opinion on that result. This is mainly because of the fact that the genre that was most
popular within the survey was ‘House’. Before conducting my analysis I did some research on what
the ‘House’ music genre codes and conventions were. After finding out that the codes and
conventions consisted of ‘Drinking’ and ‘Partying’ I realised that having a target audience aged
between 15 and 18 was unrealistic because it is currently illegal to sell alcohol to children under the
age of 18, this is the same for the partying/clubbing convention. Clubbing is only legal for people
over the age of 18 which means to target a younger audience would be innapropriate and they will
find it difficult to relate to the meaning behind the song.
After completing my research I realised it would be difficult to target the female gender especially
because in ‘House’ music videos they have women in revealing clothing that some women may find
demaning and may take offense to. However I have realised that in order to attract a male and
female audience having a female lead protagonist, which was the most popular response, will allow
me to find common ground between the two sexes. By having a the protagonist as a female I am
able to show liberation and power, allowing my female audience to aspire and look up to the main
character however by implementing the revealing clothing, whislt also showing class I attract the
male audience. However my results also showed that my target audience want both a male and a
female protagonist, this means I will need to find a way to include bost sexes into the music video
without making one seem more infurior to the other and find a way to make both my target
audience groups happy with the way their sex is portayed.
What style will my music video be?
From my survey I can see that the responses came back equal betweeen the ‘Narrative’ and ‘Dance’
style based music video. This shows me that both these styles are very popular within my target age
group. Because I did no want to risk losing some of my targeted audience so I came to the conculsion
that I will included both a narrative to the dance style music video. Therfore enabling me to reach a
wider range withing my targeted audience. I also feel to make a good music video there has to be a
story behind it, implemention dance into a music with a narrative is not difficult as long as it is done
well. Also If I mix the two together the music video could also become an artistic style music video.
However from my responses I can seee that if I went allong the narrative route for my music video
my targeted audience would prefer that the narrative behind the music video matched up wih the
song lyrics. After looking at several ‘House’ music videos I can see that this is not a usual convention
within the genre, they are normally very artistic and do not follow the lyrics, which means I will be
going agains the codes and conventions when creating my music video in order for me to target my
audience.
I have removed the idea of an extended story to my music video, this is mainly because a high
majority of my resposnes came back with a firm ‘no’ on whether or not they like an extened
narrative. Pesonally I can relate to this response because as both a consumer and producer I feels
asthough when there is an extended storyline you ger bored of the song, you tend to just want to
listen to the music but are unable to do that because of the speaking/ narrative in between the song.
