2. 1 Didn’t We expand your chest?
This Surah was revealed as a support for the Prophet (S) when he was having a
difficult time. When the people of Quraysh mocked him in public, his chest
would feel tight. Spreading Islam was very emotionally draining work for the
prophet.
In this surah, Allah (SWT) speaks directly to him and begins by asking him a
question, so that he would feel grateful for what he had been given.
“Expand your chest” means “your mind was put at ease”.
Allah helped the Prophet (S) relax by giving him certain knowledge- he not only
gave him the revelation, but also the full understanding of it.
3. This Surah was revealed as a support for the Prophet (S)
when he was having a difficult time. When the people of
Quraysh mocked him in public, his chest would feel tight.
Spreading Islam was emotionally draining.
There was such a heavy burden on him. If Allah (SWT) hadn’t
helped relieve him, the burden would have crushed him
emotionally.
The pressure that was placed on him was something nobody
could bare, without the help of Allah (SWT).
2 And We relieved you of your burdens
4. 3 (The burden) that was breaking your back
Before the revelation came, the Prophet (S) was burdened by the
oppression he witnessed in the society around him. He was so
disturbed that he would isolate himself in the cave of Hira to think.
When the revelation came, the burdens of his concerns were relieved.
The Quran addressed all the unanswered questions that were
weighing heavily on his soul.
Side Note:
The Prophet (S) drew
strength through his
prayer, especially the
night prayer.
5. 4 And we elevated the mention (of your name)
When the Prophet (S) began to spread his message, he was
publicly called a liar, a magician, a possessed man.
In this Ayah, Allah tells the Prophet not to worry- that his
name would always be praised.
The Prophet’s name is
mentioned every minute
of every day all over the
World when the Athan is
called in every continent
How is the Prophet
mentioned in an honorable
way until today?
The Prophet’s name is mentioned next
to Allah’s name many times in the
Quran.
The Prophet’s name is
mentioned in the
Shahada and theTahiyyat.
Every time we hear the Prophet’s name,
we say “Sallah Allahu AlayhiWa Salam”
The Angels constantly
make duaa for the
Prophet.
6. Surely after hardship comes ease.
Then surely, after hardship comes ease.
5/6
Allah repeats this consolation twice.
The repetition is out of love.
Similar to when someone is upset and you repeat:
It’s OK!
It’s OK!
Allah assures the Prophet (S) that the
hardship he was facing would end soon.
7. So when you are free (from tasks), stand (in prayer)
7
The Prophet (S) enjoyed standing in prayer
and speaking to His creator.
However, he had many responsibilities that
kept him busy. Meeting with the people and
spreading the message of Islam took up
most of his daily hours.
In this Ayah, Allah (SWT) tells him to
stand in prayer after he finishes with the
people during the day.
Night Ibadah is the
fuel for our soul
which gives us the
energy to do the
hard work during
the day.
The best time to work
on our relationship
with Allah is during the
night, when we are free
of all our
responsibilities.
Lessons:
8. And dedicate yourself to your Lord.
8
The Prophet (S) was given the option to live forever or to die, and he
chose death because he wanted to be with Allah (SWT)
His pleasure was to be with the Creator whom He loved.
What do we do
in between each
salah?
What do you do when
you feel tightness in
your chest?
How do you view
standing in Salah?
Is it a burden when
it’s supposed to be a
relief?
