Surah Al-Kawthar
Background Story
The Prophet (S) had 3 sons, who all died when they were very young. An evil
enemy of Islam named Al-As used to mock the Prophet and say that he would be
forgotten because he didn’t have any sons to carry his name. He called him
ABTAR, and even the Prophet’s uncle was celebrating the death of the Prophet’s
sons.
Today the name “Muhammad” is the most common name
IN THE WORLD, and P. Muhammad is by far the most influential man
to ever live on Earth.
We know more details about his life and legacy than other person in history.
*****‫ذكرك‬ ‫لك‬ ‫ورفعنا‬
The Prophet (S) changed every aspect of his followers’
lives…all in 23 years!!
How they think
How they treat people
What they say/don’t say
What they love/they hate
How they dress
How they run their government
How they do business
How they take a loan
How they eat
How they go to the bathroom
How they sleep
How they get married
How they get divorced
There has never been a movement that changed
every aspect of the people’s lives in this short
amount of time.
You know when you study Revolutions in World
History, you learn that they take hundreds of
years. And even then they affect the political
realm, or the economic realm. They didn’t change
the personal aspects that Islam changed.
Ayah #1
Surely we have given you Kawthar
In this Surah Allah is helping the Prophet to think about what he has GAINED, instead of what he has LOST.
Allah tells him, don’t worry, I have given you Kawthar-
KAWTHAR is an exaggeration of KATHEER… A LOT!!! Good beyond imagination.
Kawthar also refers to a river in Jenna from which every Muslim will drink and will never be thirty again.
Allah has given the Prophet this honor of being the final Messenger and having the LARGEST Ummah of any
Prophet before him. What is coming for him in the Akhira is
so much better than what life has to offer. This is a lesson for all of us about
the importance of positive thinking.
Focusing on the good in our lives
instead of the bad helps us feel
grateful and helps improve our
psychological well-being.
This Surah starts with a gift, then
moves to an order….
Ayah #2
So pray and sacrifice to your Lord (alone)
The Prophet lost his child and was in so much pain, and
Allah tells him how to remedy his heart.
1. Focus on the good-positive thinking
2. Pray: When you feel pain, connect to your Creator.
When you receive a gift (blessings) you should be thankful,
and the best way to be thankful is to pray.
(remember the previous Surah (MAUN) mentioned those
who pray in order to show-off…This Ayah is highlighting the
true purpose of Salah.
3. Give to the Poor: When you sacrifice the animal, it is
given to the poor. Giving charity is another way to give
thanks for what you have.
Ayah #3
The one who hates you is the one who is cut off
Oh Muhammad:
Everyone who follows your message will be one of your children.
Everyone who follows your message will follow your teachings before
they follow any other teachings.
They will love you more than they love their own families and friends.
The words of your enemies can’t hurt you. Your
enemies will forever be forgotten and you will
never be forgotten.
