What is Seam?
A seam is a joint of two pieces of fabric in producing a three -dimensional shape of a garment.
Properties of good seam are,

SEAMS DESIGNATION
Each stitched seam is designed numerically by five digits:
0.00.00 refers to the CLASS, 1-8;
0.00.00 refers to the material configuration,
01 to 99;
0.00.00 refers to needle penetrations, material configurations, 01-99.
Seam Classification:
According to British Standard 3870: 1991, seam is classified as-
Class 1- superimposed
Class 2- lapped
Class 3- bound
Class 4- flat
Class 5- decorative/channel
Class 6- edge neatening
Class 7- applied

* Formed by lapping two pieces of component, they are produced with minimum of two pieces of component.

Pattern making involves three methods-
Drafting

Flat paper pattern making
Drafting
It involves measurements derived from sizing systems or accurate measurements taken on a person, dress or body form.
Measurements for chest, waist, hip and so on, and ease allowances are marked on paper and construction lines are drawn to complete the pattern.
Drafting is used to create basic, foundation or design patterns.
MEASUREMENTS
Bust – measure just under the arms around the fullest part of chest. Waist – measure around narrowest part of torso. High Hip – measure 6 inches [15.5 cm] below waist around the hips. Back-waist length – measure from nape of neck to waist level Shoulder length – measure shoulder from ball socket to side of neck. Armhole depth – measure from nape of neck to under arm level. Back width – measure from armhole to armhole across shoulder blades. Neck – measure around base of neck.

Draping
It involves the draping of a two dimensional piece of fabric around a form, conforming to its shape, creating a three-dimensional fabric pattern.
Ease allowances for movement are added to make the garment comfortable to wear.
However, it is more expensive and time consuming than flat pattern making.
Draping can be made on a Human body or on a stand.
Advantage of draping is that the designer can see the overall design effect of the finished garment on the body form before the garment piece is cut and sewn.
Flat Pattern Making
It involves the development of a fitted basic pattern with comfort ease to fit a person or body form.
A sloper is the starting point for flat pattern designing.
It is a simple pattern that fits the body with just enough ease for movement and comfort. Five basic pattern pieces are used for women’s clothing.
They include a snug-fitting bodice front and bodice back with darts and a basic neckline, a sleeve and a fitted skirt front and back with darts.
However, as fashion changes frequently women’s styles fluctuate frequently.
These basic slopers are then manipulated to create fashions.
Nowadays draping is also tested by Computer aid techniques.
A basic sloper has no seam allowances, which facilitates its manipulations to various styles.
It has no design interest, only construction lines are marked on it.
It is necessary that the basic structure of a sloper should be such that adjustments can be introduced easily.
For a good pattern making, accurate measurements are of utmost importance.
Derivatives of Twill Weave
Twill weave is a kind of weave that repeat on three or more ends and picks and produces diagonal line on the face of fabric.
In a regular twill the diagonal line or twill line produces at 45 degree angle with the horizontal.
Concept:
The most characteristic of twill is that they have diagonal lines on the cloth.

Methods of Pattern Making
Pattern making involves three methods-
Drafting
Draping
Flat paper pattern making
Drafting
It involves measurements derived from sizing systems or accurate measurements taken on a person, dress or body form.
Measurements for chest, waist, hip and so on, and ease allowances are marked on paper and construction lines are drawn to complete the pattern.
Drafting is used to create basic, foundation or design patterns.
MEASUREMENTS
Bust – measure just under the arms around the fullest part of chest. Waist – measure around narrowest part of torso. High Hip – measure 6 inches [15.5 cm] below waist around the hips. Back-waist length – measure from nape of neck to waist level Shoulder length – measure shoulder from ball socket to side of neck. Armhole depth – measure from nape of neck to under arm level. Back width – measure from armhole to armhole across shoulder blades. Neck – measure around base of neck.

Draping
It involves the draping of a two dimensional piece of fabric around a form, conforming to its shape, creating a three-dimensional fabric pattern.
Ease allowances for movement are added to make the garment comfortable to wear.
However, it is more expensive and time consuming than flat pattern making.
Draping can be made on a Human body or on a stand.
Advantage of draping is that the designer can see the overall design effect of the finished garment on the body form before the garment piece is cut and sewn.
Flat Pattern Making
It involves the development of a fitted basic pattern with comfort ease to fit a person or body form.
A sloper is the starting point for flat pattern designing.
It is a simple pattern that fits the body with just enough ease for movement and comfort. Five basic pattern pieces are used for women’s clothing.
They include a snug-fitting bodice front and bodice back with darts and a basic neckline, a sleeve and a fitted skirt front and back with darts.
However, as fashion changes frequently women’s styles fluctuate frequently.
These basic slopers are then manipulated to create fashions.
Nowadays draping is also tested by Computer aid techniques.
A basic sloper has no seam allowances, which facilitates its manipulations to various styles.
It has no design interest, only construction lines are marked on it.
It is necessary that the basic structure of a sloper should be such that adjustments can be introduced easily.
For a good pattern making, accurate measurements are of utmost importance.
Derivatives of Twill Weave
Twill weave is a kind of weave that repeat on three or more ends and picks and produces diagonal line on the face of fabric.
In a regular twill the diagonal line or twill line produces at 45 degree angle with the horizontal.
Concept:
The most characteristic of twill is that they have diagonal lines on the cloth.
Basic garments construction,
Stitches are used to join fabrics and materials. There are various types of stitches classified into six classes based on their structure and method of formation. The most common types are lock stitch (Class 300), multi-thread chain stitch (Class 400), and covering chain stitch (Class 600). Each stitch type has distinct features and is suited for different applications based on factors like strength, elasticity, speed of formation, and suitability for various fabrics.

- 2. What is a support fabric? Support fabrics is a term referring to the construction details that are usually hidden from view when a garment is worn but serve an important function in maintaining the shape and comfort of the apparel.

- 6. Lining LINING -- a separate, but attached, supportive or inner garment fabric or fabric construction which conceals or covers the inside. garment construction
- 7. Uses of Lining used to finish the inside of a garment; smooth material makes garment more comfortable allows the garment to be more durable
- 8. Fabric selection for Lining There are a multitude of fabrics suitable for use as a lining. The deciding factors include: 1) type of fashion fabric (weight, fiber content/method of care, hand or "feel," personal likes and dislikes) 2) type and style of garment 3) type of lining--partial or complete; and how the lining will be attached.
- 9. Fabric selection for Lining Fabrics may be woven or knit; they should be able to "give" and recover as necessary to accommodate body movement. The lining fabric should be durable, opaque, colorfast to perspiration and body oils and the same care method as the fashion fabric. Lining should match or harmonize in color with the fashion fabric, and have a smooth surface texture to permit the garment to be taken on and off the body easily. It is important that the lining be the same weight (a lightweight polyester or microfiber jacket or dress) or lighter weight (wool slacks or suit) and softer than the fashion fabric so that it does not dominate the garment. Lining fabric should be preshrunk before using following the same procedure you plan to use for the finished garment.
- 10. Underlining/ UNDERLINING -- a supportive or inner garment fabric which "backs," or is attached to, each major garment piece (jacket front, jacket back, sleeve, etc.).
- 11. Uses of Underlining Underlining is used to gives support to fashion fabric makes garment more opaque
- 12. Fabric selection for underlining The weight of the underlining is usually lighter, but compatible to the fashion fabric. Underlining and the fashion fabric must be compatible in terms of care. Examples of underlinings include voile, organza, lightweight polyester/cotton blends, silk, muslin, lightweight percales, batiste, fusible tricot, and some commercial lining fabrics. Underlining should be preshrunk before using.
- 13. Interlining/Interfacing INTERLINING/INTERFACING --- a separate layer of fabric or fabric construction between the lining and the fashion fabric generally for warmth. Interlining is usually cut by the same pattern as the lining. In the case of foam, fleece or felt-type fabric which adds some bulk, lining would need to be cut some larger to accommodate interlining. Interlining does not take the place of interfacing.

Fabric selection for Interlining/interfacing There are Three types of (fabrication) for interlining/interfacing 1. non woven 2. knitted 3. woven Some lining fabrics are backed with or come with interlining substances: a metallic reflective finish, backed with wool, quilted, or napped-backed lining fabrics, etc. Bulk often becomes a serious consideration; "warmth without weight" is another. Interlinings must be compatible with all other fabrics in the garment in terms of care.
