INTRODUCTION TO TEXTILE STUDY
By the end of the lesson, students should be
able to:
 Identify textile materials
 Explain basic textile terms
 Examine the types and properties of
textiles
 Give reasons for studying textiles
OBJECTIVES
Basic textile terms
Fibre is a hair like basic unit of raw materials used in the making of fabrics and yarns e.g. cotton, linen, silk,
wool etc.
Yarn is a thread made by twisting or spinning fibres.
Fabric is cloth constructed with yarn or directly from fibres by weaving, knitting, crocheting, felting etc. a
woven fabric is made up of two sets of yarn i.e. the warp and the weft.
The warp is the yarn or thread which runs length-wise in a woven fabric. It is parallel to the selvedge.
The weft is the yarn that runs cross-wise in a fabric. It runs at right angles across the selvedge grain.
The selvedge is the edge of the fabric made by the weft thread or yarn by turning over the warp thread. It is
the mill-finish edge of a fabric that runs in a length-wise direction.
Bias is the diagonal direction across the two grain lines- the warp and the weft.
True bias makes an angle of 45 across the length-wise and cross wise grains. It has the greatest stretch.
Grain refers to the direction of yarns or threads in a fabric.
The right side (RS) is the side to be worn out.
The wrong side (WS) is the side to be worn inside.
• Reasons for the study of textiles
• 1. It helps us to identify the types of fabric and
their characteristics.
• 2. Understanding the qualities of fabrics helps
us to choose the suitable fabric for a given
purpose.
• 3. It helps us to use our fabrics intelligently.
• 4. We are happier with our clothing and fabric
purchase.
• 5. One can develop interest in clothing and
textile.
• General Uses of textiles
Textiles are used for the following:
 Covering and beautifying or adorning the body.
 Constructing of household linen such as bed
sheets, curtains, towels etc.
 Protecting the body from cold or heat such as
sweaters and cotton wears.
 Protecting the body from rain or wind such as
rain coats.
 They are used for making ski and other sports
wear.
Fabric construction methods
Fabric construction is the process of twisting
fibre into yarns and yarns into fabrics or
textiles. Fabric construction methods include:
Weaving
Knitting
Crocheting
Braiding
Knotting
Bonding
Felting
