Modern technology has affected our lives so much that we seem to be constantly rushing through our daily activities in an impatient manner. Technology has increased the speed of travel and access to information, but this has also led people to feel they must multi-task and accomplish everything quickly. While machines now perform repetitive tasks that were once done by hand, this constant focus on saving time leaves little opportunity for relaxation. However, modern conveniences have reduced the difficulties of manual labor and tedious jobs compared to the past.

The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

In summary writing, you are asked to condense a
selected area of text by:
reproducing facts and ideas required by the question,
using your own words as far as possible,
keeping within the word limit specified by the
question,
in a well-constructed continuous paragraph.
When marking the summary, the examiners will look
at 2 categories:

Content
- The key points you were asked to select
from the passage.
Style
The accuracy and quality of your writing.
- The extent to which you are able to use
your own words
6. SUMMARY QUESTION
Using your own words as far as possible, summarise the

PARAGRAPH 3 TO PARAGRAPH 7.

(not note form), must not be longer than words, (not
counting the words given to help you begin.)
Begin your summary as follows: Modern technology
has affected our lives so much that we… [25
marks]
8. PASSAGE A PARAGRAPH 1
Modern inventions have speeded up people’s lives
amazingly. Motor-cars cover a hundred miles in little
more than an hour, aircraft cross the world inside a
day, while computers operate at lightning speed.
Indeed, this love of speed seems never-ending.
Every year motor cars are produced which go even
faster and each new computer boasts of saving
precious seconds in handling tasks. Then there is the
speed with which we access information wherever we
are. Pocket computers and mobile phones enable us
to log on to news or contact our friends in
seconds, even from some mountain top.
9. PASSAGE A PARAGRAPH 2
All this saves time, but at a price. When we lose
or gain half a day in speeding across the world
in an aeroplane, our bodies tell us so. We get
the uncomfortable feeling known as jet-lag; our
bodies feel that they have been left behind in
another time zone. Again, spending too long at
computers results in painful wrists and fingers.
Mobile phones also have their
dangers, according to some scientists; too
much use may transmit harmful radiation into
our brains, a consequence we do not like to
contemplate.
10. PASSAGE A PARAGRAPH 3
Our behaviour, also, has felt the impact of modern
technology. People seem to be in a rush, and
increasingly impatient. Automatic doors on lifts
never open quickly enough for us and we tap our
feet impatiently if our computers take an extra few
seconds to access information on the Internet. Even
some of our clothes reflect this impatience, for we
need to acquire the right “look” as quickly as
possible. Who wants to wear denim jeans as stiff as
tin when you can buy them pre-washed, pre-faded
and maybe pre-patched at the knees?
11. . PASSAGE A PARAGRAPH 4
The obsession with saving time results in many
people trying to imitate computes in an effort to handle
several tasks simultaneously – multi-tasking , as it is
called. They talk to somebody on the telephone, listen
to somebody else nearby, and look at a computer
screen, all at the same time. Frequently, the efficiency
of their work suffers. Speed of thinking, too, is often
confused with intelligence itself. The student who
takes pain to weigh up a question before answering
will not be considered as smart as those who snap
their fingers and glibly claim they know the answer.
12. PASSAGE A PARAGRAPH 5
However, what do we do with the time we
have saved? Certainly not relax, or so it
seems. We are so accustomed to constant
activity that we find it difficult to sit and do
nothing, or even just one thing at a time.
Perhaps the days are long gone when we
might listen quietly to a story on the radio,
letting imagination take us into another world.
13. PASSAGE A PARAGRAPH 6
There was a time when some people’s lives
were devoted simply to the cultivation of the
land or the care of cattle. No multi-tasking
there; their lives proceeded at a much gentler
pace, and in a familiar pattern. There is much
that we might envy about a way of life like this.
Yet before we do so, we must think of the hard
tasks our ancestors faced: they farmed with
bare hands, often lived close to hunger, and
had to fashion tools from wood and stone.
Modern machinery has freed people from that
primitive existence.
14. PASSAGE A PARAGRAPH 7
Technology has also made work in factories far less
tedious, with machines performing the dull, repetitive
tasks previously carried out by human hands. The
computer, too, has brought major advantages in printing
processes. No longer has each individual letter of every
word to be set by hand in wooden blocks, ready for the
printing press to “read”. Such is the speed of a computer
printer that an author can put the finishing touches to a
book and see it printed on the same day. The motor-car
has been blamed for its polluting effects and its demands
for more and more roads, but it has banished the time-
consuming and uncomfortable journeys endured in horse-
drawn vehicles.
15. PASSAGE A PARAGRAPH 8
Despite the hold that speed has on our
lives, its attractions are beginning to dwindle.
Countries have abandoned thoughts of ultra-
fast, supersonic passenger aeroplanes, and
shaving minutes off journeys by road does
not win the approval of society as a whole.
Possibly the world’s long fascination with
speed is finally ending

Modern technology has affected our lives so much that we seem to be
increasingly impatient and in a hurry. We strive to acquire the right
“look” as quickly as possible. Many become obsessed with saving
time. Multi-tasking reduces work efficiency drastically. Thinking speed
is confused with intelligence. We are so accustomed to constant
activity that we find it difficult to relax or even do just one thing at a
time. We no longer have the patience to listen quietly to a story on the
radio, letting imagination take us into another world. However we no
longer need to use our bare hands for hard manual tasks or suffer
from hunger. Machines free us from primitive existence and dull and
repetitive tasks. Computers greatly simplify the printing process. An
author touches up his book and gets imprinted on the same day.
Motorcars make travelling less time-consuming and more
comfortable.

to be increasingly impatient and in a hurry. We strive to acquire the
right “look” as quickly as possible. Many become obsessed with
saving time. Multi-tasking reduces work efficiency drastically.
Thinking speed is confused with intelligence. We are so
accustomed to constant activity that we find it difficult to relax or
event just do things one by one. We lose our patience to listen
quietly to a radio broadcast, letting imagination take us into
another world. However we no longer need to use our hands for
difficult manual tasks or suffer from hunger. Machines free us from
primitive existence and dull and repetitive tasks. Computers greatly
simplify the printing process. An author edits and prints his book
on the same day. Motorcars make travelling less time-consuming
and more comfortable. [132 words]
