Problems of Well-Being
Presentation by: Brittney Wagner
How technology has changes our lives
forever…
• 1. Technology has killed the greeting card
• We are no longer paying postage to send out birthday cards. An e-card, text, or email has that covered.
• 2. How we date
• Online dating has been around for a while, and many people are using Google to get see if their date is a dud.
• 3. How we share
• We are no longer using the traditional route of sharing information. Social networks now allow us to share pretty much anything, anywhere,
anytime.
• 4. How we watch TV
• Our TV experience has evolved. We are no longer prisoner to a TV set. We can now watch what we what, when we want, how we want.
• 5. How we communicate
• Gone are the days of picking up the phone or heading over to someone’s house to chat. Smartphones and the internet have replaced traditional
chats with virtual ones.
• 6. How we read
• We no longer need to carry books if we don’t want to. Smartphones, tablets, and e-readers have made it easier for us to carry our books around
without breaking our backs.
• 7. How we parent
• Parenting has now expanded to the internet. We now have to teach our children digital etiquette and warn them about the dangers on the
streets as well as online.
Here are 10 ways parents can use technology
positively:
• Online calendars help coordinate everyone’s schedules and can be accessed by a variety of devices. Google Calendar is a
great one to try.
• Cell phones allow families to text updates on activities, practices, and even grocery lists. Do you remember how hard it
was to organize schedules without cell phones?
• Teachers are able to use class websites or apps like Class Dojo to keep parents updated about school.
• Busy parents are able to pay bills and bank online. You can conveniently pay the electric bill at 11:30 while watching Jimmy
Fallon.
• Doctors are now accepting Skype or using messaging services to chat with parents and patients. This can save a trip to the
waiting room full of contagious germs.
• It is easy to check the weather and stay updated on severe or threatening situations. Keeping your family safe has never
been easier.
• Monitor a child’s Internet activity with an app. Keep worries at bay and be involved in what your child is viewing, texting,
or messaging online.
• Get homework help or locate answers to difficult questions like “what happens to atoms when you cut paper or cloth?” by
Googling or seeking educational websites.
• Clean out the family entertainment center and go digital. Use movie or television services that don’t require bulky boxes,
movie cases, or tons of cords.
• Forget making scrapbooks with paper and craft scissors. Use online photo sites to store, print, and create photo books.
Positive effects of technology on our lives…
• There are so many advantages with improved technology in our daily life.
• With the help of mobile technology we are able to talk to our friends and
relatives who are living far from us.
• With the help of internet, we are able to learn new things and take online
courses.
• With the help of aviation technology we are able to reach distant places within
hours which took years of time to reach in olden days.
• With the help of social networking we are able to find our childhood friends,
relatives and be aware of important events in their life that are coming up.
• With the help of information technology we are able to share information to any
part of the world with in milliseconds.
• With progressive technology in the agriculture field, we are able to meet food
requirements of people all over the world.
Negative effects of technology on our lives…
• With the ability to connect to the internet within seconds, children are getting addicted
to online games and their physical activities and exercises are becoming considerably
less.
• Social networking are creating rivalry between best friends and couples are getting
divorced.
• Aviation technology is causing health problems for their workers and creating serious
environmental threats.
• With the heavy usage of fertilizers, our soil is losing its natural fertility and several
varieties of plants became extinct.
• Consider automobiles regarding technology. Automobile technology was first developed
to make the journey of humans more convenient. Now we are facing serious
environment pollution issues due to vehicles which are releasing unwanted green house
gases into the environment. Now we are trying for more environment friendly
automobile technology which will have less impact on environment when compared with
the present technology.
How technology is affecting our bodies…
• From Spending six to eight hours a day in front of a computer can
cause us to become "hunched and immobile", says Chiropractors
Association of Australia (CAA) spokesman Dr Patrick Sim. This can
cause shoulder, arm, hand and neck problems, and issues with
balance and coordination. The association says good posture at the
desk and a comfortable and supportive chair are paramount.
• Some tips that desk workers may want to take into initiate would be
going for a brisk walk at lunch, a stroll around the office every hour,
and checking your posture by standing with your heels and back
against the wall. See a chiropractor to have your posture and spine
assessed regularly.
How technology is affecting our health…
• Debate continues to rage about whether or not mobile phones cause
cancer, with research providing conflicting answers.
• It is said to be that some cell phones can cause cancer because of the
radiation that reflects off of our devices.
• Technology has the ability to be used to lessen stress and time
consuming tasks that steal precious moments away from the family.
Technology in schools- How it affects
children’s learning….. Pros
• Independent learning for students
• Visual illustrations- make learning easier
• Life skills via technology-Using technology in classroom could
prepare your students for their deep rooted future with enhanced
technologies hitting into the market. The vital skills like as focusing on
creating presentation, maintaining proper etiquette, writing emails
etc. which could be inculcated in the classroom.
• Creativity is enhanced and focused upon-The best thing about the
technology in classroom is that it is able to help those students who
are interested in learning things in creative and innovative manner.
Cons
• Technology could be distraction
• Disconnection with Social Media- Technology is affecting how
students connect with other students. Social media is allowing
children to connect through text or messaging. This is why it needs to
be avoided in the classroom so the students can still learn and be
efficient with working and communicating with other kids.
Technology on our minds….
• Technology affects our attention span, memory…
• In 2007, a neuroscientist polled 3,000 people and found that the younger
respondents were less likely to remember standard personal information,
such as a relative's birthday or even their own phone number. Similarly,
studies have shown that calculators may decrease simple mathematical
skills. Some people are unable to navigate their own cities without the help
of GPS.
• Social media and the Internet have also been shown to shorten our
attention spans. Individuals immersed in digital media find it difficult to
read books for long periods of time, and often skim articles online rather
than reading every word. This phenomenon can be particularly troubling
for youth, whose brains are more malleable and, therefore, may fail to
develop concentration skills.
Importance of problems with well- being…
• The importance of problems associated with our well-being can very much affect
a person everyday life from their mind, body, and their community around them.
• The main problem with our well-being is impacted by the technology that we are
surrounded with. Our minds are affected because technology has a major impact
on the way our minds think, memorize, and pay attention to our world around us.
• Technology affects our bodies in ways that we may not be aware of. We spend
most of our days on our phone or computers which affects our posture, our
mood, and can cause health issues.
• Technology is affecting our well-being because children are more involved with
texting or calling rather than face to face interactions. This is shown through
children at school. Many children have difficulties with group activities because of
the one on one communication between each other.
Probably solutions…
• The solution to peoples well-being is to limit your time on technology
as much as possible. This will decrease your ability to gain unhealthy
habits. Parents need to limit the amount of tv and electronic use in
their children and make sure that they maximize their time with
activity and interactions with other children in their community.
• This is also the solution for adults who work a lot. We all have to limit
the amount of time that we are using technology so we can maintain
a healthy body and mind.
• Technology should be limited in classrooms. Teachers need to focus
more on group activities where the children can have social
interactions with the other kids through group activities.
