Sumerians believed in and worshipped multiple gods. They built towering ziggurats, or step pyramid temples, where religious, social, and economic activities took place. Priests would honor the gods through ceremonies that involved washing statues, music, incense, and presenting food to the gods before eating it themselves. Over time conflicts between city-states weakened Sumer and it eventually fell under the control of Babylon in the 1700s BC.
