Suggestopedia, developed by Bulgarian psychiatrist Georgi Lozanov in the 1970s, is a humanistic teaching method aimed at enhancing language learning by minimizing psychological barriers. 2.  It is a method developed in the 1970s by the
Bulgarian psychiatrist educator Georgi Lozanov
(1926-2012).
 It is a teaching method and considered to be
one of humanistic approaches.
 It is a specific set of learning recommendations derived from
Suggestology, ¨a science … concerned with the systematic study of
nonrational and /or nonconscious influences that human beings are
constantly responding to (Stevick 1976: 42).

have when learning.
 This method is used in different fields, but mostly in the field
of foreign language learning.
 It includes a rich sensory learning, a positive expectation of
success and the use of a varied range of methods like
dramatized texts, music, active participation in songs and
games, etc.
 Also, the decoration, the furniture and arrangement of the
classroom, the music and the authoritative behavior of the
teacher are the most important characteristics.

consciousness and concentration.
 He described how attentiveness is manipulated to optimize
learning and recall. Lozanov believed most learning takes
place in a relaxed but focused state.

their mental capacity and by using this method they can learn
a language approximately three to five times as quickly as
through conventional teaching methods.

 There are six principal components through which
desuggestion and suggestion operate:

intonation, rhythm and concert pseudo- passivness.

7.  Authority
- Information and memory are enhanced when coming from an authoritative
figure: teacher.

- Students regain self-confidence and spontaneity.

concentration is raised.

8.  Objectives
-To deliver advanced conversational proficiency quickly.
-Although memorization is very useful for learning a second language, it
is not the focus of this method.
-The main focus of suggestopidia is the understanding and creative
solution of problems.
 The syllabus
-30 days, ten units. Each class of four hs a day, six days a week.
-The focus in each unit is a dialogue of 1200 words or so, with the list of
vocabulary and grammatical commentary. (Graded by lexis and grammar)
-The whole course has a patterns of presentation and performance.
-On the first day, students are test in order to know their level of English.
Then the teacher sets the attitude they should have towards the course
which will encourage and provide them with a positive, relaxed and
confident environment.
-Oral presentations and written tests through the course. Everything
review on the final day.

9.  Types of Learning and Teaching Activities
* Listening activities concern about the text and text
vocabulary of each unit. (pre-session phase)
* Questions and answers (1st session)
* Listening the story in a ¨special way¨ (2nd session)
* Role – plays (3rd session)
* Imitation (3rd session)
 Learner roles
* Students volunteer for suggestopedic course.
* Learners must not try to figure out, manipulate, or
study the material presented but must maintain a pseudo-
Passive state.

10.  Teacher roles
• Teacher should create situations in which learners are most
suggestible and then to present linguistic material in a way
most likely to encourage positive reception and retention by
learners.
• Show absolute confidence in the method.
• Organize properly and strictly observe the initial stages of
the teaching process- including the choice of music,
punctuality, etc.
• Maintain a modest enthusiasm
• Give tests and respond tactfully to poor paper (if any)
• Teachers are expected to be skilled in acting, singing, and
psychotherapeutic techniques.

11.  The role of instructional materials
• Direct support materials such as text and tape.
• Indirect support materials including classroom fixtures
and music.
• The text is organized around 10 units and each unit
should be governed by one single idea.
• The text book should have emotional force, literary
quality and interesting characters.
• The appearance of the classroom ( bright and cheery),
furniture ( reclining chairs arranged in a circle) and the
music.

 The four-hour language class has three parts:
1) Oral review section
- Learned material
- Students sit in circle
- Discussion proceeds as a seminar
- Micro-studies vs Macro-studies
2) Presentation of new material
- New dialogue is analyzed in terms of grammar,
vocabulary and content.
- Teacher’s attitude is vital for the success of learning.

13. 3) Concert session (Heart of the method)
- All conversation stops and music is played until the mood of the
music is reached.
- The teacher starts reading the new text while students follow
him/her in their textbooks.
- By the end of the first part of the concert, everyone remains in
silence.
- The second part is played before the teacher begins to read again.
- Students close their textbooks and listen to the teacher’s reading.
- At the end, students leave the room silently with only one
homework: read the lesson again before going to bed and once more
before getting up in the next morning.
