David Ausubel proposed subsumption theory to explain how new information is learned and organized in our cognitive structure. The theory states that learning is most effective when new concepts are related to concepts we already know. Ausubel suggested using advance organizers to help relate new material to prior knowledge by providing an overview of topics before details are presented. Advance organizers help students incorporate new information by subsumption, which is relating ideas to our existing cognitive framework through processes like derivative, correlative, superordinate, and combinatorial learning.
