Subliminal perception

  1. Process through which every person makes a selection, organizes and interprets external stimuli into meaningful and coherent picture. Everyone with his/her senses of sight, sound, taste, smell, touch receives the world that surrounds him/her, experiencing in on his/her own way, estimates it and on that basis builds ideas, opinions, experiences, prejudices. Stimuli from the external environment does not immediately form a mental picture of the object. Image is formed after mental processing which is called perception.
  2. Perception depends on psychological characteristics of the personality, its experience, motivation, attitudes, emotions, values, moods, expectations, beliefs, level of education etc. We all have different perceptions that can differ from the objective reality.
  3. Painter – intrested in lines, beauty of horse Zoologist – intrested in parts, race of the horse Trader – intterested in age, strength, health of horse
  4. Detection threshold - the lowest stimulus that causes some sensation (feeling) in humans. The first moment you notice something with the senses. Below this threshold man does not notice anything. APS is the point (the moment) when one notes the difference between nothing and something! Weakest taste, the smallest light, most silent sound, lightest weight .....
  5. Changes that man can notice! Louder and louder and louder music. Difference between louder sound related to the initial (standard) sound is called a differential threshold of consciousness. Important for marketing: changes for the better (packing, quality) - higher differential threshold of consciousness changes for the worse (higher prices, lower quality) - lower differential threshold of consciousness
  6. Subliminal perception - receiving stimuli “below” or on the edge of consciousness! Stimulus is too weak, very quick to be noticed at first glance. Visual or auditory stimulus beyond the limits of consciousness with the power to influence people's behavior! It has the power of persuasion to purchase a product. Subliminal perception is a stimulus above absolute threshold of consciousness, but under the differential threshold of consciousness. Stimuli that is registered by our mind is called perception or supraliminal perception, and on the edge of our awareness – subliminal perception
  7. First actualization in 1957, when James Vicary, market researcher, conducted an experiment in a movie theater in New Jersey when playing the movie Picnic. Viewers of the film were exposed to short messages – “Drink Coca Cola” and “Eat popcorn”! They were very quickly flashed on screen with a duration of 1/3000 of the second, every 5 seconds. Vicary claimed that these messages have increased sales of Coca-Cola for 18% and popcorn for 58%! The results were never published !!!!
  8. In 1962, in an interview with “Advertising Age” - Vicar clarified that subliminal perception is a fraud !!! It is a lie! But it was very late!!!!
  9. In 1958, Subliminal perception had already been developed in the book by Vance Packard - Hidden persuaders!
  10. Subliminal perception again is actualized in the 1970s with the book “Subliminal Seductions” by Wilson Bryan Key! According to him, the marketers are trying to convince consumers to buy products using subliminal erotic images and suggestive words. Especially the word SEX is abundant. -even in the Ritz crackers, beverages, ice cubes, chicken wings, ads for bowls with shells!
  11. Why sex for ordinary products? Because sex is attention catcher!!
  12. Disneyland is a company that uses lots of subliminal messages. They are not always related to sex, but mostly with the character of Mickey Mouse - as a reminder that it is the image/ belongs to Disney.
  13. In 1995, a pro-life lobby group, American Life League (ALL), alleged that several Disney films, including The Rescuers, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, The Little Mermaid, Aladdin and The Lion King, contained subliminal messages and sexual imagery.[15][16]
  14. Subliminal messages are hidden in other products as well. In this ad for Palmolive hampoos – are you noticing a male hand ????
  15. Toblerone chocolate is coming from Bern, Switzerland. Bern is a city known as – “The city of bears!” The symbol is embedded in Toblerone!
  16. Who is really Lord of the Rings? Apart wives - Coca Cola !!
  17. Why sex in ads for ordinary food products, children's products, alcohol, drinks, movies? Because it attracts attention !!!
