Intro to GIS
What is GIS?
Why do we use it?
OGC – Open Geospatial Consortium
OGC(R) standards are technical documents
that detail interfaces or encodings. Ideally,
when OGC standards are implemented in
products or online services by two different
software engineers working independently,
the resulting components plug and play,
that is, they work together without further
debugging.

What is a Map?
An AutoCAD Map 3D map file is a
window into your information. It has
links to all the data and images you
include in your map:
1. Standard AutoCAD objects
2. Spatial data from a database or file
3. Raster images
4. Attribute data
DEMO: Overview of AutoCAD Map 3D Features
1. Create and Assign Geographic Coordinate Systems
2. Combine Geospatial Features and Drawing Objects
3. Create and Edit Features and Drawing Objects
4. Search and Filter Data
5. Creating and Editing Data and attributes
6. Analyzing Data
7. Use Metadata
8. Organize Data
9. Style Data
10. Theme and Analyze Data
11. Manage Data
12. Share and Publish Data

DATA CONNECTIONS
Data Connection
1. Shapefile – standard ESRI spatial data geometry.
2. ArcSDE – ESRI’s spatial database which adds additional tools & features to
standard spatial databases.
3. Spatial Database – A spatial database, or geodatabase is a database that
is optimized to store and query data that represents objects defined in a
geometric space ~ Wikipedia
4. WMS - The OpenGIS Web Map Service Interface Standard (WMS) provides a
simple HTTP interface for requesting geo-registered map images from one
or more distributed geospatial databases.
5. WFS – The OpenGIS Web Feature Service Standard (WFS) provides a
simple HTTP interface for requesting & editing vector data.
6. Raster Imagery

DATA CONNECTIONS
ArcGIS for AutoCAD
ArcGIS for AutoCAD
ArcGIS for AutoCAD is a free, plug-
in application for AutoCAD that
allows you to access and create
GIS data by connecting to services
from ArcGIS for Server and ArcGIS
Online.
http://www.esri.com/software/arcgis/arcgis-for-autocad
ArcGIS for AutoCAD
Use ArcGIS for AutoCAD to
• Streamline information sharing between GIS and CAD
groups.
• View live, rich cartographic GIS maps in AutoCAD.
• Include the results of GIS analysis in AutoCAD designs.
• Add imagery to your AutoCAD drawing.
• Create, manipulate, and define how CAD data is
organized and attributed as GIS content so it can be
used in ArcGIS for Desktop or AutoCAD.
