The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

SKIP is a UK student led registered charity which supports child welfare in communities throughout the developing world
SKIP was set up in 1999 by a small group of healthcare students from Cardiff University who developed a project, working with children in an orphanage in Belarus, Each summer they would send out groups of students to provide manpower to support the care programs and recreational activities of the orphanage, as well as raising funds to supplement staff wages and the development of facilities at the orphanage. Created the concept that students could taking action, at an undergraduate level, to support the health and welfare of vulnerable children.
This realisation drove the initial creation of SKIP (Students for Kids International Projects); a vision where healthcare students throughout the UK would learn to develop projects in conjunction with local overseas collaborating organisations, aimed at improving the lives of children and their communities.
In late 2003, SKIP became an officially registered UK charity.
SKIP has now branched out to universities up and down the country Including Edingborough, Southampton and UCL amog many others (10 in total)
each of which has its own intervention spanning from Madagascar to Cambodia/ India
our aims are to create a sustainable intervention ensuring that our work extends from our project to have a long term beneficial impact whilst Focusing on the well being of children and their right to good health and education
Also aim to Develop relationships for future students to carry on the project as well as Creating young professionals with good communication skills and an awareness of global issues
SCRIPT:
Originally set up in 1999 in Cardiff as BACCUP by Medical Students – ___________ and after a successful X number of years in Belarus we unfortunately withdrew due to the political climate and practicality issues
We appeal to mature students, post graduates, and undergraduates from all schools
Previously we’ve been health based due to the intervention – but as the appeal to become part of our organisation has increased we have broadened our volunteer base to include students from all subjects
. Although our intervention specifically focuses on Sex Education we thrive to ensure that all students are fully trained ready for project via training sessions both internally and externally throughout the year
Not only are students drawn to us for the volunteering experience but also for the fact that we provide an opportunity to experience a different culture and be provided with value lessons on public speaking, fundraising, recruitment and working as part of a team
Zambia is in the south of africa and is surrounded by botswana, democratic republic of congo and malawi, zimbabwe
Became independent from the UK in 1964 was North Rhodesia, president just died, 10 provinces in zambia, and we work in the southern – Livingstone
Zambezi river, vicotoria falls
Politcally stable compared to neighbours including zimbabwe – why now increase in tourism, with more people going to zambai side of vicotoria falls
English is the main language, with each tribe (nine main ethnolinguistic grouos) speaking own language
Mainly christian country with other 68% being protestant
Used to be poverty, relies on copper industry with the recent (2009) recession further hitting the economy, now tourism helping economy to grow
Government and private schoool, lots of community schools
Lowest expenditure on health amongst south african countries
HIV epidemic appears to be declining, but still remains problem to the country, (dec ore than 25% from 2001 to 2010)
Few hospitals most communites rely on rural health posts and small government run community health centres
Also great place to volunteer as locals very friendly and really want volunterrs and people from overseas to come into their community
The main consideration whilst in Zambia is prevention against malaria. Other than this Zambia is not a country at high risk for yellow fever so this is not an issue.
Within our committee we have a designated health and safety officer who is responsible for ensuring that all our health and safety precautions are in check.
Yellow Fever/Ebola free
Little hostility towards british/whites
High rate of HIV/other STIs
Learn values from culture
Given me insight into global development projects and confirmed my ambitions to work in this field- attending national conferences with skip has allowed me to speak to people who work for a national charity
Made friends on the trip who are now a great part of my life- I now live with someone I went on project with and see everyone else regularly
Partner non-gov organisation
Share SKIP’s ethos with an aim to make all of their projects sustainable

Collaborate our project with projects from other groups making them as efficient as possible
Fantastic contacts in the region
Able to offer advice
Deep involvement and input in all of their projects
No middle men – deal directly and email regularly throughout the year
No “admin” fees – very helpful in suggesting where we should go, know what ideas are sustainable and give tuition on the local do’s and don’ts
Sort us out with two interpreters for the entire trip
Malota
Community school with very low tuition fees
Fat Pat responsive to work and allows us to work to our full capacity
Located within a local compound
Allowed to share our lesson plans with teachers and pass on lesson plans (more sustainability)

Majority of children orphans
Heard about the positive impact we had in Malota and requested for us to do some teaching (via communication with NGO)
Strong link with headmistress
Approached by several teachers here also and requested our teachers
