UPDATE
“Their angels always see the face of my
Father in heaven”. Matthew 18:10
James 1:27 – Look after orphans in
their distress
Proverbs 31 – Speak up for those who
cannot speak for themselves
Isaiah 1:17 - Defend the cause of the
fatherless and widows
“And whoever welcomes a little
child like this in my name
welcomes me.” Matthew 18:5
Scriptures teach us that children need
our compassion & justice…
Every child has the right to grow up
healthy, be stimulated and nurtured, and
to live without fear, isolation, or
violence.
OUTLINE
• BACKGROUND: ECD & AFRICA

What is Early Childhood Development?
Early childhood development (ECD) is:

Editor's Notes

  1. The bible is full of passages about God’s heart for children.
  2. And God calls us to have his heart and respond to children – especially those in need with compassion and justice.
  3. A great African statesman who was also known to have a deep love for children once said..
  4. We strongly believe that Every child has the right to grow up healthy, be stimulated and nurtured, and to live without fear, isolation, or violence.
  5. And so much of our work in Africa – has focused on children, vulnerable children, forgotten children. Especially on young children and on their early development
  6. And yet the reality is that millions of young, children in Africa are not going to reach their full developmental potential because they are being born in difficult and challenging circumstances. The tragedy is that these challenges and poor outcomes for children become intergenerational. So, we have a collective responsibility to break this cycle.
  7. Young children are amongst the most vulnerable. And what happens in early childhood will last a lifetime. When we talk about early childhood development we mean
  8. And yet we know that many young children in Africa but around the world suffer from malnutrition that leads to stunting, and stunting has a tremendous impact on brain and body development and health. So it is vital children get the right nutrition from birth.
  9. Children need access to quality learning and stimulation and yet only 25% of children who should be at preschool are attending because of poverty or because preschools just aren’t there.
  10. We know that parents are a child’s first and more important teacher. We also know that there is very little in place to support parents - even though Research is telling us that Poor parenting can alter brain chemistry and architecture in ways that reverse positive development not just for the immediate generation, but subsequent generations as well. So it is vital that we act early.
  11. And so we have looked to support these children through Children's programs and, seeing how it is vital that we start as early as possible, we have developed and expanded through our ECD programs that have been implemented in a number of countries
  12. In SA, the challenges young children face have informed our vision and mission and in SA our ECD program focuses on supporting and capacitating preschools and parents to provide a nurturing and stimulating environment for children. We also have a large feeding program
  13. As as aa quick update. We are supporting preschools with a range of support and services, some with infrastructure, and materials, and teacher training and all with nutritional support. For parents we are running curriculm-based support groups as well as Toy and book libraries with support all though a special partnership with Walmart, and we are feeding over 19,000 children on a monthly basis with nutritious food thanks to KFC support. I will be sharing more in Saturdays session.
  14. We want to thank all of you for your help and your interest in expanding these programs.
