BuildingBonnerandCampus-WideMorale,Leadership,andEngagement
2018 BONNER SUMMER LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE
SCENARIO:
You are an issue-based team of student leaders, and you have created multiple avenues for campus-wide
engagement with anti-hunger initiatives. One is a panel of experts who are working toward alleviating
hunger in the community and on campus. Another is a large service immersion at a local food pantry and
resource center. How do you mobilize your peers (both within and beyond the Bonner program) to
become involved in these two issue-focused events?
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:
❖ Have you encountered this
scenario in your Bonner
program, campus, or
community? How did you
handle it?
❖ What would be the best way
to address the scenario at
hand?
SKIT GUIDELINES:
❖ Your skit performance should last anywhere between 2-3 minutes
(you will be timed!)
❖ ALL members of your group should be involved in the skit
performance in some way.
❖ Act out the scenario, as well as your strategies to address the
challenge at hand.
❖ Each skit should share at least TWO strategies that address the
scenario.
❖ Be creative!

SCENARIO:
You are a senior intern who facilitates and manages the Bonner Leadership Team (BLT), a group of five
student leaders in your program. During your weekly staff meetings, you notice there is an imbalance in
workload. Two BLT members are doing most of the work, while the others are less engaged. This also
translates to a dominating presence of those two members in the group. How do you address this team
dynamic?
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:
❖ Have you encountered this
scenario in your Bonner
program, campus, or
community? How did you
handle it?
❖ What would be the best way
to address the scenario at

You are a member of the Bonner program and you and your peers are yearning for a service trip.
Unfortunately, your program is running short on funds and cannot accommodate a large trip for you and
the rest of your cohort. How do you rally your peers to make this dream a reality? What skills do you rely
on? How do you raise funds? What power structures are in place within your network that will either help
or hinder your ability to succeed?

SCENARIO:
You have just completed a sophomore exchange with a school that has awesome SWAG for their
program. You see the way wearing Bonner gear unifies their cohorts, and want the same for your
program. Unfortunately, your center is running short on funds this fiscal year, and cannot afford to provide
you with similar gear. How do proceed in an effort to unify your cohort? Do you try to raise funds for gear?
Do you try an alternative strategy to unify? What direction do you take, and how do you execute your
plan?

SCENARIO:
Your Bonner Program formerly utilized an incentive system for attendance at non-mandatory Training &
Enrichment events. Since banishing that system due to some serious flaws, you’ve noticed a severe drop
in attendance at non-mandatory T&E events. How do you rally your peers to encourage attendance at
T&E and Bonner social events? If necessary, how do you provide incentives or a token economy to
encourage attendance and participation?
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:
❖ Have you encountered this
scenario in your Bonner

SCENARIO:
One of your community partners is a site that relies solely on volunteer participation to function. Your
Bonner Program is the number one provider of volunteers for this partner, but you’ve noticed that there
are less and less of your peers interested in volunteering at this site. What do you do to raise awareness
of and engagement at this site? How do you incentivize or encourage your fellow students to volunteer to
keep this program running?

Student leader scenarios

  • 1. BuildingBonnerandCampus-WideMorale,Leadership,andEngagement 2018 BONNER SUMMER LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE SCENARIO: You are an issue-based team of student leaders, and you have created multiple avenues for campus-wide engagement with anti-hunger initiatives. One is a panel of experts who are working toward alleviating hunger in the community and on campus. Another is a large service immersion at a local food pantry and resource center. How do you mobilize your peers (both within and beyond the Bonner program) to become involved in these two issue-focused events? DISCUSSION QUESTIONS: ❖ Have you encountered this scenario in your Bonner program, campus, or community? How did you handle it? ❖ What would be the best way to address the scenario at hand? SKIT GUIDELINES: ❖ Your skit performance should last anywhere between 2-3 minutes (you will be timed!) ❖ ALL members of your group should be involved in the skit performance in some way. ❖ Act out the scenario, as well as your strategies to address the challenge at hand. ❖ Each skit should share at least TWO strategies that address the scenario. ❖ Be creative! BuildingBonnerandCampus-WideMorale,Leadership,andEngagement 2018 BONNER SUMMER LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE SCENARIO: Students in your Bonner Program have requested more focused engagement activities to bond with their classmates, but when Class Representatives plan events with peer contribution, there is minimal attendance. How do you facilitate better engagement in activities for specific groups within your program?
  • 2. BuildingBonnerandCampus-WideMorale,Leadership,andEngagement 2018 BONNER SUMMER LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE SCENARIO: You are a senior intern who facilitates and manages the Bonner Leadership Team (BLT), a group of five student leaders in your program. During your weekly staff meetings, you notice there is an imbalance in workload. Two BLT members are doing most of the work, while the others are less engaged. This also translates to a dominating presence of those two members in the group. How do you address this team dynamic? BuildingBonnerandCampus-WideMorale,Leadership,andEngagement 2018 BONNER SUMMER LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE SCENARIO: As senior interns, one of your goals this year is to encourage greater community between the class cohorts, because you want to promote a sense of unity amongst the entire Bonner program. What are ways that you can prioritize all-Bonner community?
  • 3. BuildingBonnerandCampus-WideMorale,Leadership,andEngagement 2018 BONNER SUMMER LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE SCENARIO: On your campus, your center of community engagement organizes and facilitates a Freshman Day of Service each year during First Year Orientation. The entire first year class serves at 10 different sites, which each target a different issue area. What are strategies to keep these students engaged after this one day of service? BuildingBonnerandCampus-WideMorale,Leadership,andEngagement 2018 BONNER SUMMER LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE SCENARIO: You are a site-team leader, which means that you are the student who has experience at a particular community partner organization and helps to empower the team of students who serve there. Your team of students includes Bonners, students from other service programs, and other peers on campus. What are ways to build unity amongst your team? What strategies do you have to strengthen your site-based team?
  • 4. BuildingBonnerandCampus-WideMorale,Leadership,andEngagement 2018 BONNER SUMMER LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE SCENARIO: You are Bonner Leadership Team (BLT) members (elected student leaders in your Bonner program) who are responsible for mentoring and running class meetings for your sophomore Bonner cohort. You are frustrated because the cohort is often missing meetings and not willing to participate. How do you troubleshoot this low Bonner morale and lack of accountability? BuildingBonnerandCampus-WideMorale,Leadership,andEngagement 2018 BONNER SUMMER LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE SCENARIO: You are a member of the Bonner program and you and your peers are yearning for a service trip. Unfortunately, your program is running short on funds and cannot accommodate a large trip for you and the rest of your cohort. How do you rally your peers to make this dream a reality? What skills do you rely on? How do you raise funds? What power structures are in place within your network that will either help or hinder your ability to succeed?
  • 5. BuildingBonnerandCampus-WideMorale,Leadership,andEngagement 2018 BONNER SUMMER LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE SCENARIO: You have just completed a sophomore exchange with a school that has awesome SWAG for their program. You see the way wearing Bonner gear unifies their cohorts, and want the same for your program. Unfortunately, your center is running short on funds this fiscal year, and cannot afford to provide you with similar gear. How do proceed in an effort to unify your cohort? Do you try to raise funds for gear? Do you try an alternative strategy to unify? What direction do you take, and how do you execute your plan? BuildingBonnerandCampus-WideMorale,Leadership,andEngagement 2018 BONNER SUMMER LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE SCENARIO: You or one of your site team leaders are told that one or a few of the Bonners have been encouraging others to skip team meetings or advising other students to not take Bonner requirements seriously. What strategies would you use to combat this situation? How would you handle the student who is encouraging disengagement?
  • 6. BuildingBonnerandCampus-WideMorale,Leadership,andEngagement 2018 BONNER SUMMER LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE SCENARIO: Your Bonner Program formerly utilized an incentive system for attendance at non-mandatory Training & Enrichment events. Since banishing that system due to some serious flaws, you’ve noticed a severe drop in attendance at non-mandatory T&E events. How do you rally your peers to encourage attendance at T&E and Bonner social events? If necessary, how do you provide incentives or a token economy to encourage attendance and participation? BuildingBonnerandCampus-WideMorale,Leadership,andEngagement 2018 BONNER SUMMER LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE SCENARIO: One of your community partners is a site that relies solely on volunteer participation to function. Your Bonner Program is the number one provider of volunteers for this partner, but you’ve noticed that there are less and less of your peers interested in volunteering at this site. What do you do to raise awareness of and engagement at this site? How do you incentivize or encourage your fellow students to volunteer to keep this program running?
