STRUCTURE OF A SPECIFIC
ACADEMIC TEXTS
Text structure is fundamental in the development
and organization of ideas. This serves as the road
map in the delivery of message, giving the readers
an opportunity to build up their own thoughts and
personal perspective about the texts read.
Knowledge of the text structure will enable
students to understand that a text may present
main ideas and details; show cause-effect
relationships; problem-solution situation and
solicit readers’ personal views.
IMAGINEYOU ARE SERVEDWITHTHESEYUMMY
HAMBURGERS.
Do you like hamburgers?
Do you know that hamburger
represents the Structure of an
AcademicText?
Well, it does. But, what is this
Structure of theText we talk
about here?
How does it represent the
Structure of theText?
STRUCTURE OF A SPECIFIC ACADEMICTEXTS
The Introduction typically describes the
scope of the text in any article gives the brief
explanation or summary of the text and
provides background of the context or topics of
the text to be discussed. It may also explain
certain statements that are important to the
text if the explanations are part of the main
text.
EXAMPLE
Coronavirus disease is considered as the most disastrous pandemic the world is facing
now. It started last December 2019 in China, and rapidly spread around the world.
According to the World Health Organization, 2020, it is linked to the same family of
viruses such as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome and some types of common colds.
Its symptoms include fever, shortness of breath and cough. This virus is transmitted
through direct contact with an infected person generated through coughing and
sneezing. It is said to be deadly; thus, safety measures promulgated by the WHO
should be taken.
STRUCTURE OF A SPECIFIC ACADEMICTEXTS
The Body is the main content of a book or other texts. It
contains the detailed explanation of the concept with
supporting details and examples. Such is recognized with
the help of transitional cues that clarifies, emphasize a
point, concedes a point, dismiss a point, adds or negates
information and many others.
Some of the Transitional cues that will help you identify
the body are: Additionally, moreover, for example,
furthermore, to illustrate, specifically, later, meanwhile,
next, then, etc.
EXAMPLE
First, washing our hands frequently and observing proper hygiene can
lessen the possibility of acquiring the virus. Because of this, the Division
of Sipalay City has given boxes of alcohol to all schools in Sipalay City.
The students and the teachers must be sprayed with alcohol before
entering the school campus. The students are encouraged to sanitize their
hands by supplying a bottle of alcohol to each classroom.
STRUCTURE OF A SPECIFIC ACADEMICTEXTS
The Conclusion is usually the restatement of the
thesis statement. At times. Concluding paragraphs
may leave a hanging questions or quotations for
the readers to ponder or to react. Often, concluding
cues or transition cues such as: accordingly, as a
result, in short, in summary, consequently, on the
whole, summing up, therefore, finally, etc. are used
to signal for conclusion
EXAMPLE
On the whole, fighting this invisible lethal
enemy lurking somewhere isn’t impossible
if we try to comply with the law and follow
the standards set by the WHO.
Having learned about the Structures of
an Academic Text, how it works in a
text and how it could be identified, can
you now tell how a hamburger relates
to a Structure of a Text? If so, can you
label each part of the hamburger
according to the Structure of an
Academic Text?
CAN YOU LABEL EACH PART OF THE
HAMBURGER ACCORDING TO THE
STRUCTURE OF AN ACADEMIC TEXT?
